Fund. You can bet on it, you can take that to the bank. . . for within two weeks of the race the Maryland Horse Breeders Association sends out bonus checks.

In short, the Maryland Bred Fund rewards owners, breeders and stallion owners for racing success in the state.

Created by the General As-sembly in 1962, the Maryland Bred Fund is the oldest state-bred fund in the country. Cur-rently, it pays winning owners a 17.5 percent bonus on top of the purse for victories in maiden, allowance and claim-ing races of $20,000 or more. Breeders get the same payout, but for a win in any race at a Maryland track, or for finish-ing second, third or fourth in stakes races.

Specifically, a victory in a $41,000 allowance/optional claiming race at Laurel or Pimlico can mean $4,000 ad-ditional to an owner or $8,000 additional to an owner/ breeder – if the winner is a Maryland-bred.

Of course we think you are already a winner if you own a Maryland-bred, but now you can see– in print – the approximate amount of the bonus that you will receive when you enter. It has been added in black and white in the condition book. So with a quick glance, as an owner or breeder you can determine the amount of the check you will be getting from the Maryland Bred Fund.

Most of you have gotten these checks in the past when your Maryland-bred has won,

Dear Owner, Breeder and Stallion Owner:

and you will continue to get checks for winning efforts in the fu-ture.

Having the bonus payout listed in print started with this spring’s Pimlico condition book. The amount to be paid from the Maryland Bred Fund to the winning owner (and the same amount to the breeder) is shown next to the purse amount.

The Maryland Bred Fund bonus program has always paid these bonuses, but now it is displayed in the condition book. The Maryland Horse Breeders Association sends Maryland Bred Fund checks to the owners, breeders and stallion owners, as described in detail above, every two weeks.

We think you made the right choice to breed, own and race a Maryland-bred. We look forward to sending these bonus checks out as much – well almost as much – as you look forward to get-ting them. It is our job and we take it very seriously.

Best of luck with your Maryland-bred horses. And make sure we know where to send those checks!

    Sincerely,Cricket GoodallMHBA Executive Director

Juveniles in the spotlight at OBS sale

Three Maryland-bred juveniles sold at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s March Sale of Selected Two-Year-Olds in Training on March 13 and 14, with two bringing six figures.

A Medaglia d’Oro colt out of Open Flirt (by A.P. Indy) sold for $125,000. The colt failed to reach his re-serve in the ring, but Win-Star Farm made an offer shortly after and purchased a half-interest, with David and JoAnn Hayden’s Dark Hollow Farm, Arnold and Susie Davidov and David and Alena Schwaber taking the other half (each have a one-sixth interest).

Dark Hollow bred the colt in partnership with Ar-nold Davidov, Alice Wolf and the Schwabers, and sent Open Flirt’s bay son through the sale with the Niall Bren-nan Stables consignment. A

half-brother to recent Gulf-stream Park maiden special weight winner Town Flirt (sold as a 2-year-old in 2010 for $200,000), the Medaglia d’Oro colt will be managed by WinStar, whose horses are based with Bill Mott and Todd Pletcher.

“We’re thrilled to be as-sociated with WinStar,” said David Hayden on establish-ing a relationship with the Kentucky-based operation. “The colt is a big, two-turn horse – he’s going to mature to 16.2 hands.”

Also sold by Niall Bren-nan Stables for Dark Hollow Farm, Dorsey and Christine Brown and Arnold Davi-dov, was a Stormy Atlantic filly out of stakes winner Touchnow (by Pleasant Tap). West Point Thoroughbreds Inc. purchased the filly for $100,000 and will send her to trainer Graham Motion. R

Making his third start of the year on March 10, Rob-ert Gerczak’s Action Andy proved once again his affinity for Tampa Bay Downs by set-ting a track record for 61⁄2 fur-longs in 1:15.47, slicing .57 of a second off the previous mark.

Facing six others as the even-money favorite in the sixth race, a handicap in which he was assigned top weight of 121 pounds, Action Andy gave backers a scare when the field headed into the far turn. Stalking the early pace (:22.90, :45.02, 1:08.98), the son of Gators N Bears be-gan to drift back as the lead-ers rounded the turn. Moving through along the rail, Action Andy, with Daniel Coa up, rallied down the stretch and drove past pacesetting Tom-my’s Memory late, winning by a length and a half.

Five times Action Andy has won at Tampa Bay from seven starts over the past two seasons – he also has two sec-onds. The Carlos A. Garcia-

trained runner accounted for Tampa Bay’s Super Stakes and Pelican Stakes in his two prior outings. In getting his third win in as many tries this year, he increased his lifetime earn-ings to $206,870.

Bred in Maryland by Carol Kaye, Action Andy is the first foal out of Love Me Twice (by Not For Love), a half-sister to stakes winners Baltimore Bob ($377,217, Da Hoss S, etc.), Balti more Belle ($359,064, Maryland Million Oaks, etc.) and Gabianna ($136,610, The Very One S). Baltimore Belle finished second in Laurel Park’s Conniver Stakes later that same hour. R

It all started 38 years ago with a stop at the post office. There, Jay Williamson, an avid horseman and longtime employee at the Maryland Jockey Club tracks, spotted a mounted poster of a multi-colored profile of a horse mid-stride. The poster announced the release of a newly penned stamp to commemorate the 100th running of the Kentucky Derby on May 4, 1974. Wil-liamson convinced the em-ployees at the post office to give him the poster, and so be-gan his passion for collecting.

Today, Williamson has amassed a collection of horse memorabilia that covers near-ly every inch of his three-story Reisterstown home. The col-lection represents his love of horses and his own personal history in racing. Relics range from posters to magazine and program covers, to games, souvenirs, figurines and tro-phies. When asked to define the collection, he points to the horses and emphasizes, “it’s all history.”

Indeed, Williamson’s col-lection reflects his own his-tory as well as the history of North American racing. To highlight this, he saved his first saddle and the accompa-nying program from his first pony race, at the 1948 Balti-more County Humane Society Pony Show. Flipping through the worn pages, names from today’s racing circuit surface: Clinton Pitts, Frank Bonsal Jr., Irv Naylor, and Jay and Ben Griswold. Like the 5-year-old Williamson and his mount, Beauty, the names signify the inception of many notable rac-ing careers.

Williamson has devoted much of his life to horses. He began working at Charles Town in the 1950s, “when the starting gate was still pulled by horses.” His career has continued ever since, with only a brief hiatus at the Sol Levinson Funeral Home, and these days you can find him at Laurel and Pimlico.

Williamson is less com-fortable talking about him-self than his memorabilia. He searches local auctions and flea markets for anything horse related. Auctioneers Rick Opfer, Steve Dance and Frank Russo provide some of the best finds. One shelf in his basement houses a col-lection of silver racing cups Williamson procured from Russo. When asked why he chose them, he reasons, if he did not, someone else would have and they would have undoubtedly been lost. Con-sistent with most of his collec-tion, William son’s goal seems to be one of preservation and posterity.

He has unearthed pro-grams, posters and other sou-venirs at auctions – painstak-ingly framing and displaying them. He especially loves advertisements for Woodbine Racetrack in Canada, clever images of trotters chasing a money truck or a jockey using a Labatt’s box as a mounting block.

Amidst these images are those of his career at the race-track. One such depicts Wil-liamson among the jockeys, valets, and trainers at the clos-ing day at Bowie. Juxtaposed with this image is a framed Mid-Week Pictorial of Bowie

    Jay Williamson: A passion for

    collectingby Muffy Fenwick

from November 29, 1923, he discovered nestled between newspapers at a local auction house.

Williamson is generous with his collection, offering vintage posters to the of-fices at Pimlico during Preak-ness Week. Asked if there is any artifact for which he still searches, he shrugs, “There is nothing I don’t have or wish I did.” Instead, he continues his tour, mentioning recent additions like a 1902 double-sided poster of an ad from the Chicago Clipper depicting

“Stewart’s Patent Cut Gear Machine,” an innovation un-veiled at the turn of the centu-ry. Williamson purchased the ad for $100 at a recent auction at Alex Cooper Auctioneers. He displays it prominently on an easel in his living room.

He marvels at the discov-eries he makes each day with-in his own house. Sounding like a man who spends plenty of time at auctions and flea markets, Williamson reasons “You’ve always got to look. There is always something out there.” R

Jay Williamson, with his best friend Tracker, outside their home in Reisterstown.

Williamson’s basement displays just part of his

enormous collection of racing memorabilia, which he has

been adding steadily to since 1974. “It’s all history,” says

    the longtime racetracker.

registered Maryland-bred fillies and mares, 3 & up. Laurel Park, March 10.

Ch.f., 2008, by Two Punch—Hunka Hunka Lori Z, by Colonial Affair. Bred and owned by Mike Zanella and Charles Reed; trained by Howard E. Wolfendale. Foaled at Green Willow Farms, Westminster, Md.

    2011: 1st $200,000 Jostle S, 61⁄2 fur., 3-year-old fillies, Parx, June 11; 3rd Dearly Precious S, Miss Preakness S. 2012: 1st $75,000 Conniver S, 7 fur., registered Md.-bred fillies and mares, 3 & up, Laurel, March 10.

Charles Reed and Mike Zanella’s homebred filly Bold Affair zipped to the front, opened a clear advantage, and dominated the $75,000 Conniver Stakes on March 10 at Laurel Park, winning by 61⁄2 lengths. Last year’s Mary-land-bred champion 3-year-old filly completed seven fur-longs in 1:23.74 and earned a 99 Beyer speed figure.

Trained by Howard Wolfendale, Bold Affair left the gate as the 6-5 favorite un-der jockey Abel Castellano in the field of 10 Maryland-bred

fillies and mares. Second-choice Baltimore Belle ral-lied for second while never threatening the winner, with Music Please finishing third, followed by Heaven’s Voice, Terra Rolla, Sound It Out, Lily Quatorze, Access to Charlie, Art of the Hunt and Over-night Fling.

“I was very impressed,” Castellano said. “I was wait-ing for the other horses to come, especially around the turn. I was wondering ‘where is everybody’ but she kept go-ing. When I got to the quar-ter pole I asked her to go and again there was nobody com-ing.”

“I didn’t think she would run that big,” added Wolfen-dale. “I was waiting for her to start backing up but she kept going. It is a pleasure to train a horse as talented as that. Good horses make good trainers.”

“She is a great big filly with a big stride,” said Castellano. “I had a lot of confidence com-ing into the race. It was a very impressive performance.”

“She didn’t break well, which has been a problem, but since nobody sent she had

    Maryland Fund Stakes Recap

enough speed to get out front and off the rail,” Wolfendale added.

Bold Affair is now five for nine lifetime and has finished off the board just once while earning $257,880. Last year, she scored in the $200,000 Jostle Stakes at Parx Racing and was third in Monmouth Park’s Dearly Precious and Pimlico’s Miss Preakness Stakes.

The chestnut daughter of Two Punch is out of the stakes-winning Colonial Af-fair mare Hunka Hunka Lori Z. Purchased by Reed out of the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Eastern Fall Yearling sale in 1999 for $7,000, Hunka Hunka Lori Z campaigned for Reed and Zanella throughout her career, in which she made 34 starts, won seven races and earned $266,533. Among her victories were the Caesar’s Wish Stakes at Pimlico and Stefanita Stakes at Laurel Park.

Bold Affair is Hunka Hun-ka Lori Z’s third winner from three foals – her full sister, Lori Z’s Punch, also campaigns for the breeders and has earned $166,325. Hunka Hunka Lori Z has not had a live foal since producing Bold Affair and did not conceive the past two breeding seasons.

    2012: 1st $50,000 Shine Again S, 11⁄16 mi., registered Md.-bred fillies and mares, 3 & up, non-winners of a sweep-stakes, Pimlico, March 31.

In one of the quick-est turn arounds an owner could hope for, Sneaky Lil – a $7,500 claimer two weeks ear-lier – blasted home to win the $50,000 Shine Again Stakes on March 31. In the first stakes of the Pimlico spring meet, restricted to Maryland-bred fillies and mares who had never won a sweepstakes, the 6-year-old daughter of 1996 Preakness Stakes-G1 winner Louis Quatorze drew off to win by 4 lengths under Abel Castellano.

Jamie Ness, the nation’s leading trainer by number of wins this year, snagged Sneaky Lil on March 15 for Midwest Thoroughbreds Inc., the nation’s leading owner by both money and wins. Sneaky Lil was claimed from the barn of Maryland’s leading owner, PTK LLC, and leading trainer, Dane Kobiskie.

PTK LLC dropped the slip for Sneaky Lil in November 2011, shelling out $10,000 to claim her from breeder Rich-ard Blue Jr. and trainer Ann Merryman. In four starts for PTK LLC, Sneaky Lil won twice and was second once.

Making her stakes debut in the Shine Again, which lured a field of eight, Sneaky Lil went off as the fourth choice. Next to last after the break and wide most of the trip be-fore going on the attack en-

more than a year, and her first stakes win since taking the Twist Stakes at Laurel Park in November 2010, Charles Di-mino’s Maryland-bred cham-pion Catch a Thief rallied in the mud to win the $75,000 Plugged Nickle Stakes at Aque duct on March 31.

Now 5, the dark bay mare trained by Tim Hills was mak-ing her Aqueduct debut. Slow to settle into stride in the one-mile test, she rode the rail at the back of the six-horse field before Eddie Castro urged her while angling her out to the five-path around the far turn. She collared the leader just past the sixteenth-pole and kicked away to win by 11⁄4 lengths in a final time of 1:38.84. The 7.40-1 third choice, Catch a Thief paid $16.80.

With the score, Catch a Thief upped her record to six wins in 16 career starts, for a

lifetime bankroll of $263,485. She earned state-bred cham-pionship honors during her 3-year-old season in 2010 when she captured four of seven starts and was second twice, leading Hills to com-ment, “she is a win machine.”

Bred by the late Jim Mo-ran’s Elk Manor Farm in North East, Catch a Thief was purchased by Hills on behalf of Long Island, N.Y., resident Dimino for $25,000 at the 2009 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-year-olds in training sale.

The daughter of Flatter is the most successful run-ner from six foals of racing age for the Red Ransom mare Nabbed. A half-sister to multi-ple graded winner and Grade 1-placed Hook and Ladder (by Dixieland Band) from the family of champion and ma-jor sire Bernardini, Nabbed was purchased by Moran for $80,000 at the 2000 Bar-retts 2-year-olds in training sale. Moran sold Nabbed for $15,000 at the 2007 Keeneland November sale while back in foal to Flatter.

    Eighttofasttocatch doubles up at Laurel

Sylvia Heft’s Eighttofast-tocatch had to work hard, but survived a pace duel to finish as a repeat winner of the Har-rison E. Johnson Memorial Stakes, the closing day feature at Laurel Park on March 24.

Guided by the meet’s leading rider, Sheldon Rus-sell, Eightofasttocatch was quick to assume the lead in the 11⁄8-mile stakes. Nearing the far turn, Cherokee Art-ist pushed inside and got to the front to duel with the 1-5 favorite until midstretch, when Eighttofasttocatch put away his rival en route to col-lecting the winner’s share of the $100,000 purse ($60,000), which included a portion of a $25,000 Maryland Fund purse bonus. Eightofasttocatch com-pleted the distance in 1:53.43 over a sealed track labeled good.

Eighttofasttocatch, Not For Love’s 2011 leading earner, now has five stakes victories at his home track in the past

year for trainer Tim Keefe. He upped his record to 10 wins (nine at Laurel) in 32 career starts, for earnings of $463,190.

The 6-year-old gelding came into the race off a disap-pointing fourth in the General George Handicap-G2 on Feb. 20 after a troubled trip.

“I was glad he bounced back,” Russell said. “This is a bit of justice because I think with a good trip we win the General George.”

Keefe said the gelding will be targeting the $300,000 Pim-lico Special-G3 at 13⁄16 miles on May 18.

“He hasn’t missed a beat and works well in-between races,” added Keefe. “I just need to keep him fresh and happy.”

The chestnut, bred by Dark Hollow Farm and Her-ringswell Stable, is out of the Nice Catch mare Too Fast to Catch, the dam of additional stakes horses Storm Punch, a stakes winner and Grade 1-placed earner of $310,619, and Southern Man. R

tering the far turn, Sneaky Lil withstood a challenge from late-running All About Her before drawing off. Touch the Birds, the betting favorite, fin-ished third, followed by Over the Moon, Lily Quatorze, Wild Kay, Brave as a Lion and Heaven’s Voice.

Sneaky Lil completed the mile and a sixteenth in 1:47.01 and paid $14.20.

A winner of six races from 31 starts, for earnings of $160,450, Sneaky Lil is the sec-ond foal out of Blue’s stakes-winning homebred Sneaks. A daughter of another Blue homebred, graded stakes win-

ner Root Boy who made his stud career at Murmur Farm in Darlington, Sneaks cam-paigned through three sea-sons, won the Pearl Necklace and All Brandy Stakes, and earned $154,460.

Sneaks’ first four foals, three by Louis Quatorze, are all winners.
