Pathways Program

Is College in your Future? If so, Erie Community College and Maryvale Community Education will be offering Pre-Collegiate Studies. These tuition free courses are designed to be fun and help you develop the skills you need to be successful in college. To be eligible for classes you must have a high school diploma or have recently taken the TASC. Hurry!!!! Class sizes are limited. To register or for more information please call Erie Community College di-rectly at 851-1243.

PATHWAYS TO SUCCESS Maryvale Community Education is in-volved in a partnership with Erie Com-munity College to provide services to adults age 18 and over who are prepar-ing to attend college. Free classes in basic math and reading skills, TASC Prepara-tion and English for Speakers of Other Languages will be offered at Maryvale locations to adults who need to brush-up before enrolling at Erie Community Col-lege. Students who successfully complete the Pathways to Success program can be quickly enrolled in degree programs at Erie Community College. Classes are offered in the daytime and the evenings. AARP Smart Driver CourseThis two-session course covers important driving skills, accident prevention and rules of the road. Those who complete the course could qualify for a 10% discount on their automobile liability and collision insurance premiums for three years and have up to 4 violation points subtracted from their license. A $5 non-refundable, pre-registration fee paid in cash or check (made out to Maryvale School System) is necessary. Students must pay the instructor $20 if you are an AARP member or $25 for non-members by a check or money order made out to AARP Smart Driver Course at the first class session. Registration dates cannot be changed for any reason. Your AARP membership card must be shown to the instructor in order to pay the $20 fee.

DRIVING

Driver Education This program is offered by Maryvale Community Education as a service to the community. Geared for high school students, participants must be 16 years old by January 25, 2016 and should possess a valid NYS learner’s permit or license. Satisfactory completion necessitates mandatory attendance of 16 sessions of 1.5 hours each of vehicle and 16 sessions of 1.5 hours each of classroom instruction. Upon successful completion, the student qualifies for a Certificate of Completion (form MV-285) or an insurance letter. There is a $5 per form replacement fee for any lost completion certificates, insurance letters and/or valid pre-licensing certificates. Attendance policy: three absences are permitted (includes both vehicle and/or classroom instruction together) but all absences must be made up by scheduling appropriate driver education activities. Please note that there are no additional fees for makeup classes. A $50 cancellation fee will be charged if withdrawal is made before the program begins. There will be no refunds after the program begins. (DRI-004)

Fencing for Beginners (Ages 10 to Adult) This course is an introduction to the Art of Classical Foil Fencing. Students will learn how to move, defend and attack using the basic fencing weapon - the foil - in the Classical French style. It is a relaxed workout coupled with exposure to the historical origins of this exciting martial art. Great for developing physical agility and mental focus, fencing is also FUN! Looking for a new and different place for your walk? Come hike the halls of the Binner Educational Center this Winter. We offer a safe site, close to your home. Our building is clean, warm and dry in all types of weather. The building is available for your walks anytime between 4:00-10:00 PM Monday through Friday or from 9:00 AM till 1:00 P.M. on Sat-urday. Quilting - Applique and PatchworkWelcome spring with a cherry floral applique. This is the perfect class for beginners and accomplished quilters alike. Intro to Playing Acoustic Guitar, Banjo, Mandolin or UkuleleHave you always wanted to be able to play the guitar or other stringed instrument? If so, this is your opportunity to try it in a relaxed and informal group setting. Personal Water Craft Boating Safety Course The Empire Safety Council’s Boating Safety Course meets New York State requirements for a Personal Water Craft (PWC) Boating Safety Course. It is intended to provide a comprehensive yet basic knowledge to acquaint you with safe and legal boating practices. The Boating Safety Course is an 8-hour instructor-led workshop which includes a student text-workbook, a new boating safety video and a 50 question multiple choice exam with an answer form. Satisfactory completion (40 correct answers) will earn you an official course completion certificate and may also earn you up to a 15% discount annually on your water craft insurance. It is important to note that Empire’s Boating Safety Course is approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) and meets mandatory education requirements for states that have boater education laws. Course completion is good for life and is recognized by the United States Coast Guard. Fencing for Beginners This course is an introduction to the art of Classical Foil Fencing. Students will learn how to move, defend and attack using the basic fencing weapon - the foil - in the Classical French style. It is a relaxed workout coupled with exposure to the historical origins of this exciting martial art. Great for developing physical agility and mental focus, fencing is also FUN! Fencing develops better eye-hand coordination, physical agility, grace and balance, while promoting cardiovascular fitness and increased confidence and self-esteem. All equipment is provided. CANCELLATION INFORMATIONThe full fee will be refunded by check or credit (when paid with charge card) if classes are filled or cancelled. Personal request for cancellation must be made two full business days prior to the start of classes i.e. if the class begins on a Wednesday, cancellation must be made no later than the prior Friday. A $5.00 cancellation fee per class will be charged. Refund checks or credits may take up to 45 days to process. Registration fees will not be refunded for any reason after the first class begins.

SCHOOL CLOSINGIf it should become necessary to close the eve-ning program because of inclement weather, the announcement will be made over WBEN, WKSE (98.5 FM) and WJYE (96.1 FM) be-tween the hours of 4:00 and 6:00 PM.
