In my role as curator of Mascalls Gallery I have the opportunity to encounter new artists and to spend significant periods of time studying favourite masterpieces. It is these moments of discovery and leisurely contemplation that I strive to give our visitors.

Our 2014 exhibitions feature some of my favourite artists. I have long dreamed of sharing the work of Frank Dobson with you. He is one of the most important, but least well known, pioneers of 20th century sculpture and will be one of 14 artists in our sculpture show, which is drawn from the darkest vaults of commercial galleries. We also return to the work of Graham Sutherland, exhibited here in 2009. This time we are showing a group of his early etchings alongside the work of Samuel Palmer who inspired him, and his close friend Paul Drury whom he worked alongside.

Then there will be names less familiar to many visitors and new works by emerging artists. I was delighted to discover the work of Dora Gordine which will be in Dealers’ Vaults. Having followed the work of Clare Woods for many years, I am thrilled that she has agreed to let us show what we think are the largest lithographs ever produced. The year finishes with the first solo museum show of Ed Kluz. You may recognise his style as he is a highly sought-after illustrator designing for, amongst others, St Jude’s, the V&A and Faber. But at Mascalls Gallery you will see a different side; Ed’s new body of work is big, dark and entirely captivating.

Another year ahead of bringing you artists you love - and those you don’t yet know you will love.

Dealers’ Vaults20th Century Sculpture

In the cellars, lock-ups and backrooms of art dealers across the country are artistic treasures rarely seen by the general public.

Some of the biggest names of British art have been selected from these “Dealers’ Vaults” to present a survey exhibition of experimentation and development in 20th century sculpture.

The human body features strongly in the exhibition, from the terracotta reclining nude of Frank Dobson through to the twisted and scarred figures created in the aftermath of the Second World War. A tender plaster by Dora Gordine sits alongside Eduardo Paolozzi’s Robot, created from discarded machine bits and found objects.

In addition to telling the story of 20th century British sculpture, the exhibition invites a glimpse into the world of commercial galleries, with works on temporary loan from some of the longest established and most distinguished galleries alongside smaller private art dealers.

Page 6: Mascalls Gallery

The industrial process of lithography is turned on its head by leading British painter Clare Woods to produce large-scale one-off works using a diesel powered road roller.

The four monumental prints in this exhibition are inspired by alabaster tombs on the Harewood House estate in Yorkshire. At first the artist’s marks seem to map the natural forms of a landscape, but the lines of a sculpted face soon begin to appear. The women of these ancient tombs are renamed by Woods with the titles of songs by Leonard Cohen, Billy Bragg, The Smiths and Jarvis Cocker. Suzanne, Shirley, Sylvia and Sheila become timeless figures.

The walls of the gallery are filled with what may be the largest ever lithographic prints. These are being exhibited alongside preparatory drawings and photographs, for the first time.

Clare Woods is one of Britain’s most important contemporary painters. Her work is held in the permanent collections of National Museum Wales, Arts Council and British Council. She has had solo exhibitions at Southampton City Art Gallery (2012), The Hepworth Wakefield, (2011), The Chisenhale Gallery, London (2006). In 2012 Woods was selected for a major commission at the Olympic Park.

When a small etching by Samuel Palmer was brought into the art studios at Goldsmiths College of Art in 1924 it sparked a mini revolt in the etching department.

The densely worked surface of Palmer’s print was in almost direct opposition to the current trends. Two of the students, Graham Sutherland and Paul Drury, were so excited by the print that they set about discovering all that they could about Samuel Palmer.

They embarked on a series of outings to the Kent countryside exploring and drawing the landscape that had so inspired Palmer. Drawn to the quality of the Kent light and the rural way of life, they produced a body of exquisite etchings directly influenced by their admiration of Palmer’s visionary work. Ninety years on, the three artists’ enlightened responses to nature, and their idyllic view of the English countryside still have the power to enthrall. The exhibition will include a previously unknown Sutherland etching and the first showing of sketches, plates and prints of unfinished works by Paul Drury.

Ed KluzThe Lost House Revisited

Lost architecture is reimagined in this series of large scale new works.

In his first solo museum exhibition, Kluz presents a body of large collages exploring the creation and destruction of the great country houses of Britain. Using archive prints and photographs, he reimagines buildings once erected as confident monuments and now reduced to ruins. Kluz says “It is in the distance between the source material and the reality of today that my imagination is fired.”

These works are the contemporary incarnation of a tradition and language stretching back to the 17th century. Within Kluz’s work can be seen elements of the prospect paintings of Jan Siberechts, the topographical prints of Samuel and Nathaniel Buck, through to the 20th century Recording Britain artists, most notably John Piper, whose depictions of architecture captured a country on the brink of wartime destruction. To this topographical tradition Kluz adds a theatricality, which draws on and transcends the romantic. His great houses offer the viewer a fantasy and an escape.
