Imam’s Corner: Mufti Nayef Patel - Qualities of True Men Many men are reluctant in doing domestic work at home. In-fact many people are of the opinion that they will lose their status as men by assisting in household chores. However the practice of Rasulullah was contrary to this. It is narrated by Hadhrat Aaishah that “Rasulullah used to assist in household chores and when the time for salaah would approach, he would leave immediately for salaah.” In another Hadith it is mentioned that Hadhrat Aaishah was asked, “What work did Rasulullah do while at home?” She replied, “Rasulullah was a man among men. He would clean his own clothes, milk the goats and take care of himself.” If all men, in present times, follow this wonderful example, we will also reap the following benefits: 1. We will be fulfilling a Sunnah of Rasulullah which is the greatest benefit. 2. We will be of assistance to our families at home. 3. Pride and arrogance will be eliminated and humility will develop in us. The following are some examples of work that could be carried out by men in their homes. Setting and clearing of the dastarkhaan for meals, helping with the dishes, putting away the ironing, helping with the children, making the bed after sleeping, helping the children with their sabak and homework, Light maintenance work at home e.g. changing light-bulbs, tap washers, etc. Unfortunately, some men have a very demanding nature. Instead of assisting with the children and household work, they demand attention for themselves. At meals times they will want to be served all the time without offering any assistance. It is of utmost importance that we forsake this attitude and bring alive the mubaarak Sunnah of Rasulullah of assisting in household work. By practicing on this Sunnah it will also assist in strengthening the bond of marriage and help in creating a loving, caring environment in one’s home. This Sunnah is in-fact a prescription to cure many of the ills which are so common in marriages today. The following is a malfooz (saying) of Hadhrat Moulana Ashraf Ali Thaanwi (RA): “This is something that I don’t wish to mention, but due to necessity I am saying it. If you wish you can find out from my wife how I conduct myself with her at home and what service I take from her. Al-hamdulillah neither am I restricted, nor do I restrict anyone else. In this way, one lives like a king.” It is always my practice that when I go home to eat and if there isn’t any fresh bread that has been baked then I eat the bread which was left over from the previous day. Most of the time when I arrive home and I see my wife engaged in some household work, I take the bread myself, fill the container with water, dish out the curry from the pot and sit down to eat. Actually if I see that she is busy cooking and she needs anything at that time, for example she needs water for cooking, I will fetch the water for her from the water pump and first give it to her. If I see that she is not busy doing any work then I will ask her to serve me. It is very important to be considerate in these aspects. After all, she also is a human being. It is not possible for her temperament to remain the same all the time. Even a servant feels lethargic at times. When I am about to leave the house, I ask her if there is anything that needs to be done before I go. If she doesn’t need anything, then I leave. If she indicated that there was some work to do, I would remain behind and complete the chore. In present times the youngsters call their wives their life companions. What companionship are they talking about? Have they even fulfilled the rights of this companionship? In-fact, instead of being their life companions they have distanced their wives because of their uncaring attitude. [misaali gharaana pg. 56] May Allah Ta’ala enable us all to follow in the mubaarak footsteps of our noble master Sayyidinah Rasulullah and grant us the taufeeq and ability to be of assistance in our homes. Aameen.

Masjid Update & News

Masjid Land Purchase Update

Hifz and Islamic Education (Alim) Program Update Alhamdulillah, the Hifz and Alim program have started successfully in our masjid. There are still a few open slots in these programs. Please contact Mufti Patel, Br. Shakeel, or the masjid website for more details.

Sister’s washroom renovations The renovation to the sister’s washroom will be initiated shortly. A sister from our community has generously donated the majority of funds for this project. May Allah give her peace and happiness in this life and here-after. Aameen.

Donation-Tax letters Tax receipt letters for 2011 will be mailed/available in the masjid in the first or second week of February.

Donate to the masjid to assist with regular operations, land purchse, expansion, or special programs: Donate to the masjid on a monthly basis by: 1. Check-o-matic donations 2. Setting up online payment via the bank 3. Donate using Google checkout, through our masjid website: http://masjidumarbinkhattab.org/ Insha’Allah, we hope that every single community member will consider setting up monthly donations to the masjid via one of the methods noted above. If you prefer to send a check, please make it payable to: Islamic Association of Michigan, 18105 Racho Road, Brownstown, MI, 48193.

The masjid has recently purchased the land adjacent to the masjid. This large parcel of land extends to the highway and provides wonderful opportunities for various activities and programs for the future. Such as future masjid expansion, primary and Islamic education for children, expanding Hifz/Alim school for children, community center, hall, physical activities, etc...) We still need $49,500 to replenish the amounts borrowed from other account to pay for the land.

Masjid Expansion Project Update Alhamdulillah, Phase 1 of the expansion project (excavation, foundation, and underground plumbing) has been successfully completed. The next phase which will begin in spring 2012 will need $500,000 to complete the overall structure. Insha’Allah, if we receive these funds, this phase will be completed by end of summer 2012. All community members are requested to make Dua for the success of this project and donate generously so the project can be completed on time. These projects will need continuous funding. We are requesting all community members to make a pledge to the ‘1000 persons with 1000 dollars commitment program' and also encourage at least 5 -10 other community members to commit to this program. The response to this program has been positive, but need everyone to participate. The pledges can be paid in the next 1-2 months.

Youth’s Perspective

KIDS ARE US By Dr. Mohammad Iqbal Mehboob

In a Hadith, Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said that anyone who helps to build a mosque or anyone who even lays a brick down while building a mosque will be rewarded a place in Jannah. (Sahih Bukhari and Muslim) Our current masjid was built in 1993-1994 for one million dollars. The masjid’s foundation began in the early 80’s from a small house. Many thought we were spending too much money for a masjid that we didn’t need and could not afford. Alhamdulillah, with the help of Allah (SWT), we were able to raise the funds and complete the building of the masjid without borrowing any money from the bank. Now, masha’Allah, almost twenty years later, the masjid has become so populated we cannot find parking for Jumma prayers or for Eid prayers. Two years ago, the community decided to expand the masjid by adding a gym and a multipurpose hall which will be used for prayers as well as for dinners and other festivities. Twenty years later, there are again some who do not feel that these additions are needed for the masjid. The gym and multi-purpose hall will be used by our youth to play and will also be used for Islamic schooling and Hifz Quran. This is needed for the community, our youth and future generations. In another Hadith, it is said that of all the places on Earth, the musajid are the cherished place to Allah (SWT) and the masjid will be part of paradise and will be raised to Jannah on the day of Judgment. (IBNE – Maja) Insha’Allah, the expansion will be a benefit to all (young and old, men and women, boys and girls). As you also know, we were very fortunate that the opportunity came for us to buy the land adjacent to the masjid.

This land can be used for various purposes for the community and the masjid. In light of all these facts, we should try to help expand our masjid. We should ask family, friends and even children to help out. If you have young children, encourage them to pay even one dollar for the donation. This is a golden opportunity for all of us to earn and have a palace in Jannah. Even though it is economically a hard time for some, I pray that all of us will take advantage of this opportunity and share it with others. We all should pray that those people who are going through a hardship can also become affluent and help us in our project. Jazak Allah Khair. Thank you.

Good Thoughts = Guest of Allah Hadhrat Mufti Taqi Uthmaani Daamat Barkaatuhum writes: Hadhrat Dr Abdul Hayy Rahmatullahi Alayh used to say that so many times thoughts of good deeds come to mind. For example, one thinks that I want to pray, read Quran, do zikr, pray tahajjud, give sadaqah e.t.c. This thought is called 'Waarid' in the terminology of the mystics. Remember, this thought of a good deed which has come in to your mind is a guest of Allah. If you value it (by acting upon and executing the good deed) the guest will come back and invite you towards another good deed. If however, it is not valued and treated well then it will not return as it is a guest with great self respect. Seek the protection of Allah from the time this guest stops coming to you as this will result in the heart becoming hard, dark and rusty. (Source: Islaahi Khutbaat, Part 16, Page 35 - 36)

Dress code for Sisters (1st part contained in this newsletter, for full article, please see website)

In the name of Allah, Most Compassionate, Most Merciful,

The covering of one’s nakedness (awra) is of utmost importance for a male and female in

Islam, thus the Qur’an and Sunnah have laid great emphasis with regards to this. We also see

the various books of Islamic Jurisprudence (fiqh) discussing the issues relating to the Awra of

both the male and female in great detail. In this brief article, I will attempt to shed some light

and look comprehensively as to what is a woman’s Awra.

Awra is an Arabic term the plural of which is Awrat. Linguistically, it means a hidden and secret

place, and a person’s Awra is that which must be kept hidden. It also refers to everything that

causes shame when exposed, thus, the Awra of an individual is the area of the body which

(normally) causes embarrassment if exposed. (Ibn Manzur, Lisan al-Arab, 9/370).

In the terminology of Islamic Jurisprudence, Awra refers to the area or part of the body that

must be covered with appropriate clothing. In the English language, it is normally translated as

‘nakedness’ or ‘area of the body that must be concealed’. Many people (normally form the

Indo/pak) refer to it as ‘Satar’. For the purpose of simplicity, I will use the term ‘Awra’ in this

article, Insha’Allah.

The Awra of a woman

A woman’s Awra can be initially divided into two categories:

1) Inside prayer (detailed in this newsletter)

2) Outside prayer (detailed in the full article on the Masjid website)

Awra inside prayer (Salat)

A woman’s Awra whilst performing Salat consists of the whole body except the face, hands and

feet. Allah Most High says: “O children of Adam! Wear your beautiful apparel (zeenah) at every

time and place of prayer.” (Surah al-A’raf, 31)

The majority of the Companions (Allah be pleased with them all), their followers (tabi’un),

Jurists and exegetes of the Qur’an have deduced from this verse (along with the other

evidences) the obligation of covering one’s Awra in prayer. (See: Abu Bakr ibn al-Arabi, Ahkam

al-Qur’an, 4/205, Ma’arif al-Qur’an (English), 3/565)

Sayyida Aisha (Allah be pleased with her) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him

& give him peace) said: “Allah does not accept the prayer of a woman who experiences

menstruation (i.e. who has reached puberty) except with a head cover (khimar).” (Sunan Abu

Dawud, no. 641, Sunan Tirmidhi, Sunan Ibn Majah and others)

Continued on next page.

Page 8: MASJID UMAR BIN KHATTAB I Masjid Umar Bin Khattab-IAM … · By Dr. Mohammad Iqbal Mehboob In a Hadith, Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said that anyone who helps to build a mosque or anyone

Continued from previous next page “Dress code for Sisters”

The great Hanafi jurist, Imam al-Haskafi (Allah have mercy on him) states in his renowned Durr

al-Mukhtar: “The Awra for a free woman (i.e. not a slave) is her full body including her

descending hair according to the correct opinion, except for the face, hands……and feet”. (See

Radd al-Muhtar, 1/405).

Therefore, a woman must cover herself properly when performing Salat. Everything besides the

face, hands and feet must be covered. The face must be covered properly so that no hair is

exposed. Also, care should be taken that no part from above the wrists and ankles is exposed.

It must be remembered that the Awra whilst performing Salat must be covered regardless of

another person being present or otherwise, and regardless of whether one is performing Salat

in dark or light. (Maraqi al-Falah, 210)

The feet, according to the more correct opinion, is not regarded as part of Awra. However, due

to the difference of opinion with regards to it, it would be more precautious and advisable to

cover them, as it will be explained in detail later.

With regards to the area below the chin, it should be remembered that the limit of the face in

length starts from the point where the hairline usually begins to the bottom of the chin, and in

breadth the portion between the two earlobes. (Maraqi al-Falah, P. 58)

Keeping this in mind, it becomes clear that the area below the chin is not included in the face,

thus it would fall within the legal definition of Awra, and one should try to cover it. However,

because of the difficulty in covering it, if a little part of it became exposed, there should not be a

problem.

Finally, (in this section), the Awra must be concealed from before entering into Salat and must

remain concealed until the end. If quarter of a part/organ that requires concealment is exposed

before initiating Salat, then Salat will not be valid from the outset. If however, quarter of the

organ which is included in the Awra becomes exposed during Salat, then, if this remains to the

duration of reciting Subhan Allah thrice, Salat will become invalid, otherwise, it will be valid.

(See: Maraqi al-Falah, P. 242)

Note) One should consult a scholar with regards to how the parts of the body are categorized

and divided, for at times, one may regard a organ of the body to be one part, whereas, legally,

it may be considered to be two parts.

THIS CONCLUDES THE ARTICLE ON AWRA (INSIDE PRAYER). PLEASE READ THE FULL

ARTICLE ON THE WEBSITE, SPECIFICALLY AWRA OUTSIDE PRAYER. IT IS A VERY DETAILED,

INFORMATIVE AND BENEFICAL ARTICLE FOR ALL TO READ AND IMPLEMENT.

Question concerning modesty:

1. “Do women get rewarded for covering themselves and being modest?”, consider the following verses of the Holy Quran:

Quran Translation:

Surely the men who submit to Allah and the women who submit to Allah, and the believing men and the believing women, and the obeying men and the obeying women, and the truthful men and the truthful women, and the patient men and the patient women and the humble men and the humble women, and the almsgiving men and the almsgiving women, and the fasting men and the fasting women, and the men who guard their private parts and the women who guard (their private parts), and the men who remember Allah much and the women who remember -- Allah has prepared for them forgiveness and a mighty reward. (Quran 33:35)

Now, imagine that if a Muslim woman will get such huge rewards for being modest and observing the laws of hijaab in normal circumstances i.e. when the environment is one of faith, piety, godliness and righteousness, and when the people generally are conscious of the consequences of one’s deeds in the life hereafter; what mighty and huge rewards would there be in stock for a woman who practices these commands in a totally opposite environment, an environment of lewdness, promiscuity, materialism, godlessness and secularism where there is no concept of the life after death and, therefore, no fear of consequences of ones deeds.

Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) has said, “One who clings on to my sunnah during the time of corruption in my Ummah, will have the reward of a martyr.” (Al-Mu’jam Alawsat of Tabarani, hadith no. 5572). And a martyr will enter paradise without any questions. If that is the reward of holding fast to the sunnah of Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) at a time of widespread corruption (like today), what will be the reward of holding fast to the compulsory acts of the Shariah! It is true that nowadays in many countries not many women dress according to the dictates of the Shariah and some even laugh at Muslims who dress modestly; however, frequently remind yourself that our success and salvation does not lie in following what others do. Our success lies in pleasing our Creator by following His commandments. And in the life hereafter, it will be the believers who will laugh at the disbelievers.

(Quran 83:34).
