Rachel has been working at the Y since 2012, and has loved every minute of her time here. You will find Rachel most Monday through Thursdays. She might be folding towels, shredding papers, scanning documents or answering the phone, but her favorite job is connecting with others. However, there is one obstacle she faces in her job every day.

Rachel is blind. But that doesn’t stop her from being one of our great YMCA employees. Rachel embodies all of the YMCA’s three areas of focus: youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.

During a late October night in 1994, Rachel wasn’t wearing her seatbelt in a car accident, which left her in “a deep sleep” for twelve weeks. Rachel woke up blind, was brain damaged, and sustained many other injuries. Rachel had to start over with everything. One of her goals was learning to play the piano. Now, during the summer, if Rachel isn’t at the front desk, she may be playing music for the Summer Camp. She loves hearing the youth sing along and learn that a disability doesn’t have to stop you from enjoying life.

Inspired by the Y, Rachel is excited about eating better and living a healthier life. Although, in her spare time, Rachel will bake dozens and dozens of cookies to sell to friends, she refrains from eating them herself. Her favorites to make: chocolate chip cookies and M&M cookies. On a special day, she’ll make some monster cookies. Baking, for Rachel, is a great opportunity to extend a passion of creating new skills and building friendships.

Each September, Rachel visits 3rd graders in Osage to tell them her story. The class starts by closing their eyes as Rachel tells the students about the importance of Seatbelt Safety. “When the kids start to cry, I also will be there crying,” Rachel recounting her many years of experience. Although she is always nervous about it, she is thankful to be able to share the story of her tragedy and triumph.

“When I had my accident, many people prayed for me, and I have given my life to God because the Bible says in Romans 10:13, ‘for whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.’ God saved me and kept me here so I can tell my story to anyone. The YMCA continues to be a great place for me to make friends and tell my Y story.”

What is the first thing you see when coming to the YMCA? Or who are the first people you see? Our Front Desk is more than a place to “check in,” but it is a warm smile, a

listening ear, and a friend in the waiting. One of those familiar faces is Rachel.

MY Y STORY

“The Inclusion program has helped them a lot and helped us a lot. We knew the Inclusion program would allow for one-on-one staff to be with the kids, take them out for the breaks they need and give them the sensory time they need.

I have seen the boys interacting with each other more safely. They are more kind, patient, and respectful after being involved in the Inclusion program.

If we didn’t have the Inclusion program, one of us would have to continue being a stay at home parent. The program allows us to have much needed break time. We’re better parents because of the program.”

—LaShelli and Eric Roen

The Mason City Family YMCA is proud to offer an Inclusive environment for all youth programming. We are a Legacy Partner with
