About USA Gypsum

Agri Marketing, Inc. was formed in 1998 to meet the need for gypsum drywall recycling and for agricultural gypsum products.

Agri Marketing owns facilities in Reinholds, Lancaster County and in Turbotville, Northumberland County, both in Pennsylvania. The company receives gypsum scraps commonly called drywall, sheetrock, wallboard, plasterboard or gypsum board from the construction industry.

Using proprietary methods, the drywall scrap is transformed into natural gypsum products that are used for lawns or agricultural purposes.

USA Gypsum is dedicated to creating natural gypsum for lawns, industrial and agricultural use through cost-effective and environmentally sound drywall recycling.

What is Drywall?

Drywall, also known as plasterboard or gypsum board, is a panel made of gypsum plaster pressed between two thick sheets of paper. It is used to make interior walls and ceilings.

Gypsum plaster, or plaster of Paris, is employed by mixing water with calcium sulphate hemihydrate.

A large gypsum deposit at Montmartre in Paris is the source of the name.

When the dry plaster powder is mixed with water, it re-forms into gypsum.

Why is Drywall recycle important?

The Construction and Demolition drywall recycling market has gained steam in recent years. Depending on the region, C&D debris comprises an estimated 25 to 45 percent of North American waste, and up to 25% of that waste is recycled. However, that still leaves a whopping 75% that is landfilled. This problem is beginning to come into the radar of state legislating bodies, and soon it may be necessary to find alternatives to land filling any C&D waste, particularly drywall, which accounts for about 26% of C&D waste.

Drywall recycling is important because drywall, which is composed of gypsum, is quite problematic in a landfill. When it gets wet in an environment that lacks oxygen and contains organic matter, as in a landfill, some of the sulfate from the gypsum dissolves into the water. If this reaches the groundwater, contamination with sulfate may result.

The Recycling ProcessThe alternative to land filling wallboard is of course, recycling. This is a huge project, because wallboard is estimated to make up 15% of all waste generated, by volume. However, a few facilities are already in place to begin the transition to a greener and safer alternative for disposing of wallboard.

Drywall Recycling

The drywall recycling process begins with the separation of scrap gypsum drywall in the manufacturing plant or at the job site. USA Gypsum will place dedicated roll off containers at the construction sites for the scrap drywall or clean the job site after the drywall contractor's job is complete.

Drywall recycling is completed by crushing, screening, then selling the gypsum products as a soil amendment used to replace mined gypsum products.
