  • From the Desk of Monsignor Carruthers

Our central mission, as individuals, as a parish community, and as the Church universal, is evangelization. This mission flows from our authentic identity, which we find in our relationship with the God Who is Love: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We were created to be “salt of the earth and light for the world.” St. Catherine of Sienna says to us: “Be who God calls you to be and you will set the world on fire.” We are called to be saints. Anything that diminishes that identity in us and wounds our relationship with our loving God is an obstacle to our mission. In this second part of our series on obstacles to the mission, we turn our attention to the topic of sin, which our patron, St. Augustine defines as “a word, deed, or desire contrary to the eternal law.”

We see sin in the fall of the angels, who radically and irrevocably made the free choice to reject God and His reign, among them the fallen angel called “Satan.” We hear his voice in the garden tempting our first parents to reject God’s reign, saying that they can be “like God.” In Adam and Eve we see sin in the fall of humanity. “Man, tempted by the devil, let his trust in his Creator die in his heart, and, abusing his freedom, disobeyed God’s command. This is what man’s first sin consisted of. All subsequent sin would be disobedience toward God and lack of trust in his goodness. In that sin man preferred himself to God and by that very act scorned him. He chose himself over and against God, against the requirements of his creaturely status and therefore against his own good. Created in a state of holiness, man was destined to be fully ‘divinized’ by God in glory. Seduced by the devil, he wanted to ‘be like God’ but ‘without God, before God, and not in accordance with God’” (CCC, 397-398). Sin is a human act that deprives us of a due good, a human act that diminishes our ability to live the truth of our calling, the truth of our identity, the truth of the eternal law of God for us for our good and the glory of His reign.

It is important for us to look at the reality of the ugliness of sin throughout history. It is also important for each of us to look at the reality of the ugliness of our own sins. Sin hurts our relationship with our loving Creator. Sin harms us at the very level of our identity. Sin diminishes our ability to live the mission to which we are called – to witness to Jesus Christ, who frees us from the burden of sin, in the midst of the world. Sin speaks to the very core of our relationship with God, our identity, and our mission. “Without the knowledge Revelation gives of God we cannot recognize sin clearly and are tempted to explain it as merely a developmental flaw, a psychological weakness, a mistake, or the necessary consequence of an inadequate social structure, etc. Only in the knowledge of God’s plan for man can we grasp that sin is an abuse of the freedom that God gives to created persons so that they are capable of loving Him and loving one another” (CCC, 387).

Beginning on November 7, 2010, I shared a four-part series in the bulletin on the Seven Capital Sins. I stated that the seven capital sins are “dispositions within us that motivate a move toward sinfulness, and their pre-eminence is not due necessarily to their gravity, but on the vast influence they can have in our lives.” They are: 1. Pride: an inordinate seeking for praise and honor. 2. Gluttony: an inordinate seeking of food and drink. 3. Lust: an inordinate seeking of sexual pleasure. 4. Avarice: an inordinate seeking of riches. 5. Sloth: an inordinate aversion for spiritual goods because of the effort required for them. 6. Envy: sadness over another’s good which is regarded as an obstacle to personal advantage. 7. Anger: an inordinate desire for revenge.

In his classic text, “Spiritual Combat,” Lorenzo Scupoli reminds us that the common location of such a battle is within ourselves – we are called to enter into combat with vice and build up virtue. In light of that, on May 8, 2011, I began a five-part series on the Cardinal Virtues. They are: 1. Prudence: the order of right reason applied to doing things. 2. Justice: the constant and perpetual will to render to everyone what is his due. 3. Fortitude: the virtue which gives strength to a person, enabling him to pursue a difficult good, even when faced with danger of death. 4. Temperance: the virtue which moderates a person’s appetite for the pleasures of the senses in general. At the end of series, I wrote that “virtues are habits that make our actions good and shape us to be all-the-more good as well. Thus prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance assist us to become the human beings we are called to be in the image and likeness of God. In the practice of the virtues we are freed to be ever more alive in Christ. St. Ireneus said that ‘the glory of God is man fully alive.’”

The “enemy of humankind” will tempt us toward sin, and at times we will fall. In light of that we must always seek sincere repentance and continuing conversion, which as I said in my homily of February 14-15, 2015, “requires the hard work of con-trition and repentance . . . surrender to the will of God.” The “enemy of humankind” can also trick us to settle for a lesser good than that to which we are called. Rather than reach for authentic holiness we settle for the mediocre. The mediocre never “set the world on fire.” Our mission is a great one, and it requires that we overcome the obstacles before us and reach for greatness – with our hearts on fire for the Lord. Benedict XVI says to us: “The world offers you comfort, but you were not made for comfort. You were made for greatness.”
