REFLECTING ON GOD’S WORD My father used to refer to the town of my—and his—

birth as a “nickel-and-dime” town. As a child, I was

never exactly sure what he meant, but it didn’t sound

like a compliment. I think it was similar to Micah’s

words about Bethlehem as “too small to be among the

clans of Judah” (5:1). Another description would be

“backwater.” Hardly a place deserving of great

expectations. Yet backwater Bethlehem, city of David

the shepherd boy, was to be the birthplace of the

Messiah—not Jerusalem, center of government and

religion, city of David the warrior king.

God’s strange choices extend beyond geographical sites

to the people on whom God sets eyes. A young

betrothed girl up in the north, a barren woman down in

the south—these were chosen to play pivotal roles in the

story of salvation. The once-barren Elizabeth, soon to

bring forth the greatest of all prophets, now proclaims

God’s most marvelous work and the little one through

whom God is working: “Blessed are you among women,

and blessed is the fruit of your womb” (Luke 1:42).

Elizabeth cues us to join in the response of the baby in

her womb: to allow our hearts and spirits to leap for joy.

Again and again God works through those who are open

to the Spirit. Blessed are they who place their trust in the

Lord, who continues to come to give us new life.

Religious Art Calendars. A very special thanks to Tom

and Rita Roemmelt for their continuing support to St.

Philip Neri. We wish the entire Fox Funeral Home Staff

a very blessed Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Empezando en Enero y durante el tiempo de Invierno la

“Misa del Sábado del Mediodía” será suspendida.

Volveremos a tener esa misa en el tiempo de Pascua de

Resurrección. Gracias por su paciencia y entendimiento.

FLORES Y DECORACIONES NAVIDEÑOS

Mis más sinceras gracias a la casa fúnebre de Fox, tanto

a la familia Roemmelt como al equipo personal, por su

donación de las flores de Navidad que estarán decorando

la iglesia y los calendarios 2019, cuales ya están

disponibles. Gracias a Tom y Rita Roemmelt por su

continuo apoyo a San Felipi Neri.

Mis más sinceras gracias al Equipo del Catecismo y al

Grupo de Jóvenes por su dedicación y amor para decorar

nuestra iglesia para la Navidad!

REFLEXIONEMOS SOBRE LA

PALABRA DE DIOS

Mi padre se refería al pueblo donde él y yo nacimos

como un pueblo “de poca monta”. De niño yo no sabía

en realidad lo que él quería decir con eso, pero no me

sonaba como un halago. Creo que sería algo similar a las

palabras que pronuncia Miqueas acerca de Belén: “que

no destacas entre los clanes de Judá” (5:1). Otra

descripción pudiera ser “agua muerta”. Difícilmente un

lugar merecedor de grandes expectativas. Así y todo, el

agua muerta de Belén, la ciudad de David el joven

pastor, estaba destinada a ser el lugar de nacimiento del

Mesías, y no Jerusalén, el centro del gobierno y de la

religión, la ciudad de David el rey guerrero.

Las selecciones extrañas de Dios se extienden más allá

de los lugares geográficos hasta las personas en quienes

Dios pone sus ojos. Una joven comprometida en

matrimonio en la región norte del país, una mujer estéril

en la región sur. Ambas fueron escogidas para jugar un

papel fundamental en la historia de la salvación. Isabel,

que una vez fuera estéril, pronto daría a luz al mayor de

los profetas y ahora con su exclamación de “¡Bendita tú

entre las mujeres y bendito el fruto de tu vientre” (Lucas

1:42), proclama la obra más prodigiosa de Dios, el

pequeñín a través del cual Dios trae su salvación.

Isabel nos da la indicación para que nos unamos a la

reacción que tuvo el niño en su seño: dejemos que

nuestro corazón y nuestro espíritu salten de gozo. Una y

otra vez Dios obra a través de aquellas personas que

están abiertas al Espíritu. Bienaventurados los que ponen

su confianza en el Señor, que sigue viniendo a darnos

una vida nueva.

THE NATIVITY OF THE LORD

Quite often, when things begin to decline in a city, the owner of a business will pull up stakes, put up a “for sale” sign, and move to a city that offers more promise, that isn’t as bad off as the one left behind. Most would say it’s the wisest and most logical thing to do. God could have done likewise when it came to us. After watching creation slowly drift away, after seeing all sorts of ingratitude and lack of respect and sin, God could have turned away from us. God could have said: “These people don’t deserve me! These people aren’t worthy of me! I’m pulling up stakes and moving to another galaxy, to a better and more promising environment for my graces!” God, however, did the opposite. Seeing things on the decline, God said: “I’ll invest myself even more deeply in the world. I’ll move in with them and live with them. I’ll let them know that I’ll be at their side and I’ll love them till the end of time.”

LA NATIVIDAD DEL SEÑOR

Muy a menudo, cuando las cosas comienzan a decaer en una ciudad, el dueño de alguna empresa pone un letrero de “a la venta” y levanta vuelo hacia otra ciudad más prometedora que la que dejó atrás. La mayoría dirá que eso es lo más sabio y lógico. Dios hubiera podido hacer lo mismo con respecto a nosotros. Después de ver cómo la creación se iba poco a poco a la deriva, después de ver toda clase de ingratitudes, faltas de respeto y pecado, Dios hubiera podido abandonarnos. Dios hubiera podido decir: “¡Esta gente no me merece! ¡Estas personas no son dignas de mí! Me voy a otra galaxia en busca de un ambiente mejor y más prometedor para derramar mis gracias!” Sin embargo, Dios hizo todo lo opuesto. Viendo cómo las cosas iban decayendo, Dios dijo: “Voy a invertir aún más en el mundo. Me mudaré allí y viviré entre ellos. Les hare saber que permaneceré con ellos y que los amaré hasta el final de los tiempos.”
