WORD FROM THE PASTOR PALABRAS DEL PARROCO

Dear sisters and brothers in Christ,

Last week I had a great privilege. I was in Rome to assist with the broadcast in Spanish of the Holy Mass celebrated by Pope Francis on the solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul. Because of my duties at the Archdiocesan radio, Radio Paz 830 AM, and our cooperation with Vatican Radio, I was invited to provide com-mentary during the celebration. The following day, I went to St. Peter’s Square for the Angelus with the Pope. As you may recall, in the Gospel proclaimed last Sunday, we heard about Jesus’ resolve to continue on his journey to Jerusa-lem. Those who study the Gospel of Luke, see a pattern in the narration. The entire Gospel is structured as a journey to Jerusa-lem, where the Lord Jesus will, of course, fulfill his mission and gain salvation for us through the Paschal mystery. His resolve to continue his journey is seen as his willful embrace of the passion and death that will take place in Jerusalem.The Gospel passage this week also speaks to us of movement, of being sent on a mission. It also speaks to us about the message proclaimed as an invitation and the possibility that it be rejected by people, which leads me back to the points I made last week in this column and the points made by the Holy Father before he prayed the Angelus with the crowd. Jesus invites us to partake in his Divine Life and in his mission, yet he scrupulously respects our freedom and the possibility that we may abuse it to reject the love of God offered to us, to sin, to live in a way that is contrary to our human nature, created for communion with God and “hard wired” for truth, goodness and beauty.“Jesus…told his disciples to precede him on the way to Jeru-salem and to announce his arrival, but not to impose anything: if the disciples did not find a readiness to welcome him, they should go ahead, they should move on. Jesus never imposes, Je-sus is humble, Jesus invites. If you want to, come. The humility of Jesus is like this: he is always inviting but never imposing.All of this gives us food for thought. It tells us, for example, of the importance which the conscience had for Jesus too: listen-ing in his heart to the Father’s voice and following it. Jesus, in his earthly existence, was not, as it were “remote-controlled”: he was the incarnate Word, the Son of God made man, and at a certain point he made the firm decision to go up to Jerusalem for the last time; it was a decision taken in his conscience, but not alone: together with the Father, in full union with him! He decided out of obedience to the Father and in profound and intimate listening to his will. For this reason, moreover, his deci-sion was firm, because it was made together with the Father. In the Father Jesus found the strength and light for his journey. And Jesus was free, he took that decision freely. Jesus wants us to be Christians, freely as he was, with the freedom which comes from this dialogue with the Father, from this dialogue with God. Jesus does not want selfish Christians who follow their own ego, who do not talk to God. Nor does he want weak Christians, Christians who have no will of their own, “remote-controlled” Christians incapable of creativity, who always seek to connect with the will of someone else and are not free. Jesus wants us free. And where is this freedom created? It is created in dialogue with God in the person’s own conscience. If a Christian is unable to speak with God, if he cannot hear God in his own conscience, he is not free, he is not free.

This is why we must learn to listen to our conscience more. But be careful! This does not mean following my own ego, doing what interests me, what suits me, what I like.... It is not this! The conscience is the interior place for listening to the truth, to goodness, for listening to God; it is the inner place of my relationship with him, the One who speaks to my heart and helps me to discern, to understand the way I must take and, once the decision is made, to go forward, to stay faithful.We have had a marvelous example of what this relationship with God is like, a recent and marvelous example. Pope Benedict XVI gave us this great example when the Lord made him understand, in prayer, what the step was that he had to take. With a great sense of discernment and courage, he followed his conscience, that is, the will of God speak-ing in his heart. And this example of our Father does such great good to us all, as an example to follow.Our Lady, in her inmost depths with great simplicity was listening to and meditating on the Word of God and on what was happening to Jesus. She followed her Son with deep conviction and with steadfast hope. May Mary help us to become increasingly men and women of conscience, free in our conscience, because it is in the conscience that dialogue with God takes place; men and women, who can hear God’s voice and follow it with determination, who can listen to God’s voice, and follow it with decision.”

Through cost containment and improved efficiency in our spending, we are forecasting a reduction of about 10% in our operating expenses. La semana pasada recibí un gran honor. Estuve en Roma para ayudar en la transmisión en español de la Santa Misa celebrada por el Papa Francisco en la solemnidad de Ss. Pedro y Pablo. Debido a mis labores en la radio arquidiocesana, Radio Paz 830 AM, y nuestra cooperación con Radio Vaticana, fui invitado a proveer comentario durante la celebración. Al día siguiente fui a la Plaza san Pedro para el Ángelus con el Papa.Como recordarán, en el Evangelio del domingo pasado, escu-chamos como Jesús se decide a continuar su camino hacia Je-rusalén. Quienes estudian el Evangelio según san Lucas ven un hilo conductor en la narración. Todo el Evangelio está estruc-turado como un camino hacia Jerusalén, donde el Señor Jesús, por supuesto, completará su misión y nos obtendrá la salvación a través de su pasión y muerte que ocurrirán allí.El pasaje del Evangelio de esta semana, también nos habla de movimiento, de envío misionero. También destaca que el men-saje proclamado es una invitación que incluye la posibilidad de ser rechazada por la gente, lo que me lleva nuevamente al punto que desarrollé la semana pasada en esta columna y lo que dijo el Santo Padre antes de rezar el Ángelus con la multitud. Jesús nos invita a participar en su Vida Divina y en su misión, sin embargo, respeta escrupulosamente nuestra libertad y la posibilidad de abusar de ella para rechazar el amor que Dios nos ofrece, para pecar, para vivir de manera contraria a nuestra naturaleza humana, creada para la comunión con Dios, diseñada para la verdad, el bien y la belleza.“Jesús dijo a sus discípulos que no debían imponer nada si usted no encuentra disponibilidad para recibirlo, de seguir ad-elante. Pero Jesús nunca se pone por delante: Jesús es humilde. Jesús invita. Si quieres, ven. Y la humildad de Jesús, es la siguiente: Él siempre nos invita, no impone. Todo esto nos hace pensar. Nos habla de la importancia que tiene escuchar nuestra conciencia, escuchar la voz del Padre en nuestro corazón y seguirlo. Jesús, en su vida terrena, no era, por así decirlo, "un control remoto", fue hecho carne la Palabra, el Hijo de Dios hecho hombre, y en un momento tomó la firme decisión de ir a Je-rusalén por última vez, un decisión adoptada en su conciencia, pero no solo, con el Padre, en plena unión con Él! Decidió en obediencia al Padre, gracias a una escucha profunda, íntima de su voluntad. Y por esta razón, la decisión era firme, ya que fue en conjunción con el Padre. Y en el Padre, Jesús encontró la fuerza y la luz en su camino. Decidió darse gratuitamente. Jesús quiere a cristianos libres, que tras el diálogo con el Padre decidan seguirle. No quiere a cristianos que siguen a su propio egoísmo, ni cristianos débiles, los cristianos que no tienen la voluntad, cristianos sin creatividad, que siempre tratan de conectarse a la voluntad de otro, y que no son libres. Jesús quiere que seamos libres, ¿dónde se hace esa libertad? Debe brotar de un diálogo con Dios en su conciencia. Si un cristiano no sabe cómo hablar con Dios, no puede oír a Dios en su propia conciencia, no es libre.Para ello, tenemos que aprender a escuchar más a nuestra conciencia. Pero ¡cuidado! Esto no quiere decir que sigo su cuenta, hago lo que me interesa, lo que me conviene, o que me

gusta ..¡Esto no es! La conciencia es el espacio interior de la escucha de la verdad, el bien, la escucha de Dios, es el lugar interior de mi relación con Él, que habla a mi corazón y me ayuda a discernir, entender la forma en que voy, y una vez que se toma la decisión de seguir adelante, seguirlo siendo fieles. Tuvimos un maravilloso ejemplo de cómo esta relación con Dios en la conciencia, un ejemplo reciente y mara-villoso: el Papa Benedicto XVI nos ha dado este gran ejemplo, cuando el Señor le ha dejado claro, en la oración, que paso tenía que dar. Siguió, con un gran sentido de dis-cernimiento y valentía, a su conciencia, que es la voluntad de Dios que habla a su corazón. Y este ejemplo de nuestro padre nos da un ejemplo a seguir.

Nuestra Señora, con gran sencillez, escuchó y meditó profundamente dentro de sí mismo la Palabra de Dios y lo que le sucedió a Jesús. Siguió a su Hijo con profunda convicción, con firme esperanza. María nos ayude a ser cada vez más hombres y mujeres de conciencia, libres de conciencia, porque la conciencia es dialogar con Dios, los hombres y mujeres que son capaces de escuchar la voz de Dios y seguirla con decisión.”

Según el mismo dijo, se trata de un esfuerzo de colaboración con su predecesor el Papa emérito Benedicto XVI, que estaba trabajando en ella y le dejó un borrador. Los invito a leerla.
