Dear sisters and brothers in Christ,

We are fast approaching the end of the liturgical year and as it is always the case, the readings and prayers of the Church turn to the final things and the end of times.

In the Gospel reading the Lord Jesus answers a question about the communion of saints. Those who ask, do not really want an answer, they are simply trying to embarrass the Lord. The Saducees did not believe in the resurrection, and wanted to ridicule Jesus. Nonethe-less, their hardness of heart affords us an opportunity to reflect on their loaded question and deepen our faith.Every time we pray the Creed we profess our belief in the com-munion of saints and the resurrection of the body. For the last two weeks, Pope Francis elaborated on the communion of saints. There follows his catechesis from last week.

“The Catechism of the Catholic Church reminds us that two reali-ties are meant by this expression: communion ‘in holy things’ and ‘among holy persons’. I wish to pause on the second meaning: this is one of the most consoling truths of our faith, since it reminds us that we are not alone but that there is a communion of life among all those who belong to Christ. It is a communion that is born of faith; indeed, the term “saints” refers to those who believe in the Lord Jesus and are incorporated by him into the Church through Baptism. That is why the first Christians were also called “saints”.

John’s Gospel states that, before his Passion, Jesus prayed to the Father for communion among his disciples, with these words: “that they may all be one; even as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that thou hast sent me”. The Church, in her most profound truth, is communion with God, intimacy with God, a communion of love with Christ and with the Father in the Holy Spirit, which extends to brotherly communion. This relationship between Jesus and the Fa-ther is the “matrix” of the bond between us Christians: if we are in-timately part of this “matrix”, this fiery furnace of love, then we can truly become of one single heart and one single soul among us. For God’s love burns away our selfishness, our prejudices, our interior and exterior divisions. The love of God even burns away our sins.If we are rooted in the source of Love, which is God, then a recipro-cal movement also occurs: from brothers to God. The experience of fraternal communion leads me to communion with God. Union among us leads to union with God, it leads us to this bond with God who is our Father. This is the second aspect of the communion of saints that I would like to underline: our faith needs the support of others, especially in difficult moments. If we are united our faith becomes stronger. How beautiful it is to support each other in the wonderful adventure of faith! I say this because the tendency to be closed and private has influenced the religious sphere as well, so much so that it often becomes difficult to ask for spiritual help from those that share this Christian life with us. Who among us has not experienced insecurity, confusion and even doubt on our journey of faith? We have all experienced this, myself as well. It is part of the journey of faith; it is part of our life. None of this should surprise us, because we are human beings, marked by fragility and limita-tions.

We are all frail. We all have limitations. Nevertheless, in these dif-ficult moments it is necessary to trust in God's help, through child-like prayer, and, at the same time, it is important to find the courage and the humility to open up to others, to ask for help, to ask for a helping hand. How often have we done this and then succeeded in emerging from our difficulty and finding God again! In this com-munion — communion means common-union — we form a great family, where every member is helped and sustained by the others.

And we come to another aspect: the communion of saints goes beyond earthly life, beyond death and endures forever. This union among us goes beyond and continues in the next life; it is a spiritual communion born in Baptism and not broken by death, but, thanks to the Risen Christ, is destined to find its fullness in eternal life. There is a deep and indissoluble bond between those who are still pilgrims in this world — us — and those who have crossed the threshold of death and entered eternity. All baptized persons here on earth, the souls in Purgatory and all the blessed who are already in Paradise make one great Family. This communion between earth and heaven is realized especially in intercessory prayer.

Dear friends, we have this beauty! This is our reality, all of ours, that makes us brothers and sisters that accompanies us on the jour-ney of life and lets us find another face above in heaven. Let us go forward on this journey with trust, with joy. A Christian must be joyful, with the joy of having so many baptized brothers and sisters to journey with him; sustained by the help of brothers and sisters who are taking the same path toward heaven; and also by the help of brothers and sisters who are in heaven and are praying to Jesus for us. Go forward on this path with joy!”

Queridos hermanos en Cristo:

Nos acercamos rápidamente al final del año litúrgico y, como de costumbre, las lecturas y oraciones de la Iglesia vuelven su atención hacia las últimas cosas y el fin de los tiempos.

En la lectura del Evangelio, el Señor Jesús contesta una pre-gunta sobre la comunión de los santos. Quienes preguntan no es-peran un respuesta. Sencillamente están tratando de tomarle el pelo al Señor. Los saduceos no creían en la resurrección y querían ridiculizar a Jesús. Sin embargo su dureza de corazón nos da la oportunidad de reflexionar sobre su pregunta capciosa y profun-dizar nuestra fe.

Cada vez que rezamos el Credo, profesamos nuestra fe en la comunión de los santos y la resurrección de la carne. Las últimas dos semanas, el Papa Francisco ha hablado de la comunión de los santos. A continuación ofrezco su catequesis de la semana pasada.“El Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica nos recuerda que con esta expresión se entienden dos realidades: la comunión en las cosas santas y la comunión entre las personas santas. Me detengo en el segundo significado: se trata de una verdad entre las más conso-ladoras de nuestra fe, pues nos recuerda que no estamos solos, sino que existe una comunión de vida entre todos aquellos que pertenecen a Cristo. Una comunión que nace de la fe; en efecto, el término «santos» se refiere a quienes creen en el Señor Jesús y están incorporados a Él en la Iglesia mediante el Bautismo. Por esto los primeros cristianos eran llamados también «los santos».

El Evangelio de Juan muestra que, antes de su Pasión, Jesús rogó al Padre por la comunión entre los discípulos, con estas pa-labras: «Para que todos sean uno, como tú, Padre, en mí, y yo en ti, que ellos también sean uno en nosotros, para que el mundo crea que tú me has enviado». La Iglesia, en su verdad más pro-funda, es comunión con Dios, familiaridad con Dios, comunión de amor con Cristo y con el Padre en el Espíritu Santo, que se prolonga en una comunión fraterna. Esta relación entre Jesús y el Padre es la «matriz» del vínculo entre nosotros cristianos: si estamos íntimamente introducidos en esta «matriz», en este horno ardiente de amor, entonces podemos hacernos verdaderamente un solo corazón y una sola alma entre nosotros, porque el amor de Dios quema nuestros egoísmos, nuestros prejuicios, nuestras di-visiones interiores y exteriores. El amor de Dios quema también nuestros pecados.

Si existe este enraizamiento en la fuente del Amor, que es Dios, entonces se verifica también el movimiento recíproco: de los her-manos a Dios. La experiencia de la comunión fraterna me con-duce a la comunión con Dios. Estar unidos entre nosotros nos

conduce a estar unidos con Dios, nos conduce a este vínculo con Dios que es nuestro Padre. Este es el segundo aspecto de la comu-nión de los santos que desearía subrayar: nuestra fe tiene necesidad del apoyo de los demás, especialmente en los momentos difíciles. Si nosotros estamos unidos la fe se hace fuerte. ¡Qué bello es sosten-ernos los unos a los otros en la aventura maravillosa de la fe! Digo esto porque la tendencia a cerrarse en lo privado ha influenciado también el ámbito religioso, de forma que muchas veces cuesta pedir la ayuda espiritual de cuantos comparten con nosotros la experiencia cristiana. ¿Quién de nosotros no ha experimentado inseguridades, extravíos y hasta dudas en el camino de la fe? Todos hemos experimentado esto, también yo: forma parte del camino de la fe, forma parte de nuestra vida. Todo ello no debe sorprendernos, porque somos seres huma-nos, marcados por fragilidades y límites; todos somos frágiles, todos tenemos límites. Sin embargo, en estos momentos de dificultad es necesario confiar en la ayuda de Dios, mediante la oración filial, y, al mismo tiempo, es importante hallar el valor y la humildad de abrirse a los demás, para pedir ayuda, para pedir que nos echen una mano. ¡Cuántas veces hemos hecho esto y después hemos conseguido salir del problema y encontrar a Dios otra vez! En esta comunión —co-munión quiere decir común-unión— somos una gran familia, donde todos los componentes se ayudan y se sostienen entre sí.

Y llegamos a otro aspecto: la comunión de los santos va más allá de la vida terrena, va más allá de la muerte y dura para siempre. Esta unión entre nosotros va más allá y continúa en la otra vida; es una unión espiritual que nace del Bautismo y no se rompe con la muerte, sino que, gracias a Cristo resucitado, está destinada a hallar su plenitud en la vida eterna. Hay un vínculo profundo e indisoluble entre cuantos son aún peregrinos en este mundo —entre nosotros— y quienes han atravesado el umbral de la muerte para entrar en la eternidad. Todos los bautizados aquí abajo, en la tierra, las almas del Purgatorio y todos los bienaventurados que están ya en el Paraíso forman una sola gran Familia. Esta comunión entre tierra y cielo se realiza especialmente en la oración de intercesión.

Queridos amigos, ¡tenemos esta belleza! Es una realidad nuestra, de todos, que nos hace hermanos, que nos acompaña en el camino de la vida y hace que nos encontremos otra vez allá arriba, en el cielo. Vayamos por este camino con confianza, con alegría. Un cristiano debe ser alegre, con la alegría de tener muchos hermanos bautizados que caminan con él; sostenido con la ayuda de los hermanos y de las hermanas que hacen este mismo camino para ir al cielo; y también con la ayuda de los hermanos y de las hermanas que están en el cielo y ruegan a Jesús por nosotros. ¡Adelante por este camino con alegría!”
