THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD JANUARY 5, 2020
A Message from Father Hinterschied
The season of Christmas is only now reaching its heights!
The traditional Epiphany blessing of homes begins today and if you do not have a piece of blessed chalk from years past, be sure to pick one up after Holy Mass and use the ritual text found on the insert. It only takes a few minutes.
This afternoon, beginning at 1:00 p.m., we will also have the great blessing of Epiphany Water. This blessing originates in the East. There are complementary emphases in the Church’s Western and Eastern approaches to Christmas. In a linear liturgical approach, the Latin way, Christmas is the start and then we work our way to Easter. In the Byzantine sensibility, the Paschal Mystery is the end at which you start first in order to make sense of the Incarnation and all other mysteries of Faith. So in the East, Epiphany means celebrating the visit of the Magi, the Baptism of the Lord, and the Miracle at Cana all at once. Please bring to the church any and all marked containers of water (filled) and salt you wish to have blessed for your own family use. This Solemn Blessing will take a half hour.
Why use holy water? First of all, holy water has the power to forgive venial sins! Second, holy water prepares us to receive the grace of the sacraments, especially the Eucharist. Finally, demons hate holy water. St. Teresa of Avila once said, “I have found by experience that there is nothing from which the devils fly more quickly than from holy water. They also fly from the cross, but they return almost immediately. Certainly, the power of holy water must be great; for my part, my soul feels particular comfort in taking it, and very generally a refreshment and interior delight which I cannot express."
Merry Christmas!

Coming in January to St. Patrick Parish – Magnifikid! The ideal spiritual guide for your children, perfectly adapted to their lives:
• to accompany them on the path of daily prayer;
• to help them develop and nourish their spiritual lives;
• to hand on to them our rich Christian spiritual values;
• to encourage them to participate fully in the life of the Church offers each week:
• All the readings and the prayers of the Sunday Mass with explanations of the difficult words and the meaning of the rituals;
• A suggested prayer for Morning and Evening;
• Many suggestions on how to live the entire week with the Lord;
• Various games, a comic, and activities to help children learn about Christian life and culture;
• A page intended for the parents with suggestions for family prayers.
Each week, your child can pick up a new edition of Magnifikid in the back of the church before Mass. Magnifikid is designed for children between the ages of Kindergarten through 5th grade. The subscription has been paid for by St. Patrick Parish. If you would like to donate towards the subscription of Magnifikid, please enclose your donation in an envelope marked Magnifikid, and place it in the Offertory.
Father has given each parish family a gift, A Year with the Catechism, which was handed out after the Christmas Masses. If your family has not picked up a copy, please take one. They are by each entrance to the church. A Year with the Catechism: 365 Day Reading Plan is a step to uncovering the treasures in the pages of the Catechism. This practical tool helps Catholics open the riches of this most important document. Each day draws attention to
recurring themes and explains terms from Tradition that might be unfamiliar, while highlighting the spiritual and pastoral elements of the text. It not only unlocks the purpose of the Catechism but how it is used in teaching the faith.
