NEW MEMORIAL HONORING BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

On May 21st, the Catholic Church will celebrate the first memorial of the Blessed Virgin May, Mother of the Church. In early March, Pope Francis decreed that the Church celebrate the Virgin Mary in her role as “Mother of the Church” every year on the Monday after Pentecost, as a way to foster Marian piety and the maternal sense of the Church. With the decree made by Pope Francis, the memorial will be added as a fixed date to the universal Church’s liturgy calendar, General Roman Calendar, the Roman Missal, and the Liturgy of the Hours. A celebration of a memorial generally means that prayers and readings specific to the day’s memorial are used in the Mass.

CHARISMATIC PRAYER GROUP Join us for Scripture, Fellowship, Praise &

Worship this Thursday in the Gym at 7 p.m.! Contact us: [email protected]

Today is Pentecost Sunday! You are invited to a very special Pentecost Celebration this afternoon at 2 p.m. at St. Bernadette’s Church in Port St. Lucie! There will be Music, Teaching, Scripture, and Fellowship, many Prayer Groups will be there! “The Holy Spirit is a gift to the Church, proceeding from the Father and the Son, and in turn gives to the church all life and all gifts. The fulfillment of the promise in Acts 1:8, “you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you,” is vividly seen throughout the Book of Acts. People are converted, healed, and resurrected. Jail doors are opened and prisoners set free. Individuals prophesy, speak in tongues, teach with power, and discern evil spirits. Men and women who one moment quake in fear behind locked doors in the next boldly lay down their lives as martyrs. Ordinary, uneducated men have become successful in the cross-cultural spread of the gospel to vast areas and lay the foundations of a movement that has lasted nearly two thousand years.” (Cleveland, Rich. Living in the Power of the Holy Spirit. Word Among Us Press, Ijamsville, MD, 2004)

PENTECOST From a historical perspective, Christianity didn’t start with Jesus’ birth, His death, or even His ascension into heaven. It started with Pentecost, the day the Holy Spirit entered the room with Jesus’ apostles. The Holy Spirit entered each one of them, an

event which is considered to be the birthday of the Church. Originally, Pentecost was a Jewish holiday held 50 days after Passover. One of three major feasts during the Jewish year, it celebrated a Thanksgiving for harvested crops. However, Pentecost for Christians means something far different. Before Jesus was crucified, He told His disciples that the Holy Spirit would come after Him. He said, “and I will ask the Father, and He will give you another counselor to be with you forever. The spirit of truth. The world cannot accept Him, because it neither sees Him or knows Him. But you know Him, for He lives in you and will be in you. I will not leave you orphans, I will come to you.” And 40 days after Jesus was resurrected, 10 days after He ascended into heaven, that promise was fulfilled when Peter, along with Jesus’ Apostles and the early Church were in Jerusalem for the Jewish Pentecost. When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly, a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. And all of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. What does the Holy Spirit mean to you? Do we even pay attention to the Holy Spirit or do we just say it rote when we bless ourselves with the sign of the cross? Do we forget that He/She is God and the third person of the Holy Trinity? The way we pray to God the Father and Jesus the Son, we should also be praying to God the Holy Spirit. May I suggest that this week we meditate and pray to the Holy Spirit and ask for a new awareness of His presence when we pray. One suggestion to awaken the graces you received in the Sacrament of Baptism and Confirmation, and to continue your Spiritual growth, is to attend a Life In The Spirit Seminar. Another suggestion would be to attend a Charismatic Prayer Group meeting. Meetings are held on Thursday nights at 7 p.m. in the gym. More information on this can be found in the bulletin. My prayer for you this Pentecost is that you experience joy, peace and blessings in your new or renewed relationship with the Holy Spirit! God bless you, Deacon Joe Torres

Dressing for Mass: When we are invited to a wedding many of us wonder, “What am I going to wear?” We wouldn't think of showing up at a wedding or another formal event in our gym clothes. How many of us search for just the right outfit to wear to our annual holiday party or on a date? Compare that to how much thought we put into what we wear to Mass on Sunday. How we dress for and occasion indicates the importance that we place upon that celebration. At Mass, we encountered God through the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Dressing appropriately for Mass is one way that we show respect, both for God and for our faith family. This respect is important at all Masses-no matter what time of day or night. Attending 4 pm. Vigil Mass: Those attending the 4 p.m. vigil service please enter through the back and observe respectful silence if a wedding or funeral service is in progress. Wait until the parties have left and then move to the available seats. Reverence: When you enter a Church, you should bless (cross) yourself with Holy Water to remind yourself of your baptism and the fact that you are entering a sanctified place. If the tabernacle is visible (i.e. hasn’t been placed in a separate room), look for the red lamp near it. If it is lit, that means the Jesus is present in the tabernacle. If not, the tabernacle is empty, and no genuflection is necessary. If the Blessed Sacrament is present, and if you are just going to walk around the church but not sit down (i.e.: you are there to do the stations of the cross), you should genuflect on one knee when passing directly in front of the altar. If you are going to be working right in front of the altar for an extended period (i.e.: you’re arranging flowers, etc.), once is enough. If you are going to sit in a pew, genuflect on one knee before entering and leaving. It is optional to cross yourself while genuflecting. For those unable to genuflect a simple bow at the waist is called for. When the Blessed Sacrament is exposed as in Benediction or Adoration, a genuflection on both knees is required. Do not try to bend both knees at once: go down on one knee, then the other, then back up the same way. During Mass, a simple bow from the waist is required in the reciting of the Creed during the words “by the power of the Holy Spirit, he was born of the Virgin Mary, and became man” (this is to honor the chief mystery of our Faith, the Incarnation). It is also traditional to bow the head slightly at the name of Jesus during prayer, especially at Mass. Also, right before the Gospel reading is proclaimed, we make a small cross on our foreheads, lips, and breast so the Gospel may be in our minds, words, and hearts. Many people cross themselves after the Confietor ("“I confess, to Almighty God…” or “Lord, have mercy…”), though this is a traditional practice, it is not required.

The celebration of Mass is always the holy occasion and, thus should be treated in the most holy manner - in body, mind, and spirit.

Amen.
