From the Cathedral Rector
Dear Friends, December has always been my favorite month of the year. The liturgical season of Advent is filled with hopeful anticipation, which eventually gives way to the exultant joy of Christmas. For many of us, the month of December is packed with liturgies, gatherings, and ample time spent with family and friends. It is a month that we delight in our various traditions that bring us comfort, joy and peace. Here at the Cathedral, we will be celebrating our various traditions that help us to fully enter into the seasons of Advent and Christmas: the Advent Procession with Lessons and Carols on December 1, the Diocesan Our Lady of Guadalupe Pilgrimage on December 7, or the Diocesan Simbang Gabi celebration on December 10. Even more, we rejoice in the sounds of the season with the various musical concerts throughout the month. Indeed, this is a month of great activity. Yet in the midst of all our December endeavors, we can find ourselves stressed and worn out by it all. After all, it is a busy month. We have a lot to accomplish -- presents to buy, parties to put on, trees to decorate, cookies to bake and more. And in the hustle and bustle, we lose sight of what really matters. On the Fourth Sunday of Advent, the Church will proclaim in the responsorial psalm, “Let the Lord enter; he is the king of glory!” I think that simple truth is the reminder we ought to embrace this month. Perhaps this truth can be our inspiring refrain guiding us and focusing us as we journey through Advent and Christmas. Let us remember that in the midst of all our endeavors and plans, it is the Lord, Jesus himself who still comes to us. It is he who comes to save us. It is he who bring us from the darkness of sin and death and into the splendor of his light. May we have the courage to delight in his presence, for it alone is what can truly give us lasting joy. May the Light of Christ guide you this month and always.

The Season of Advent
Advent is a beautiful season in which we are reminded of the longing for a savior and the anticipation of the coming
of Christ. As Catholics who have come to know the life, passion, death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ we
reflect in this season the difference Christ made in our world and more especially in our own lives. We are also
faced with the dual dimension of Advent- the already and the yet to come. We reflect on Christ’s coming and wait in
hopeful anticipation when Jesus will come again. As we reflect on the difference Christ made in our lives, our
thoughts should go to those who have not come to know Christ in their lives or those seeking to know him. These
thoughts should lead us to pray for our inquirers in RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). These are the adults
seeking Christ in a deeper, more meaningful way that God-willing will lead them to entering into life with Christ in
the Easter Sacraments. As I work with the people who have come to RCIA there is one common theme- a good
Catholic witness. Each inquirer has discussed a person who they witnessed living a good, faithful Catholic life. It is a
reminder the life we live should witness to Christ. In these season our society talks a lot about gifts, so I have an
important question to ask. How have you shared the gift of Christ in your life to others in need? Let us this Advent
season live a bold witness to Christ, let us invite someone to consider entering into life with Christ through His
Church. If you know someone in need or maybe it is you seeking to enter into the Easter Sacraments of Baptism,
Confirmation and Eucharist please contact me. Peace and joy this Advent season to you and yours.

DOMINICAN STUDENT BROTHERS AT THE CATHEDRAL During the 2019-2020 academic year, the Cathedral of Christ the Light is blessed to have the presence of 5 Dominican student brothers from St. Albert’s Priory in Oakland. The brothers are engaged in various pastoral apostolates that provide them with ample experiences as they prepare for priesthood. One brother is a transitional deacon and assists at the altar for various liturgies and delivers the homily once a month. Two brothers help Deacon Tim with RCIA on Sundays. Two brothers engage in “plaza evangelization” on Wednesday, engaging and evangelizing the many visitors on the plaza. The brothers are wonderful men from various backgrounds. Take a moment to get to know each of them. DEACON GREGORY LIU, O.P.
Br. Gregory Augustine Liu was born in Taipei, Taiwan, into a Catholic family. He attended college at University of Toronto in Canada, majoring in organic chemistry. Having been ordained a deacon in September this year by Bishop Michael Barber, he is currently finishing up the last year of the initial formation towards priesthood. Before becoming a Dominican in 2012, he was a parishioner of St. Mary Magdelen's Parish in Berkeley. There Br. Gregory learned about the Dominican Order and heard a call from the Lord to consecrate himself to be a preacher of the Gospel and teacher of the Catholic faith, which he loves so much. Br. Gregory is very
excited to serve at Cathedral of Christ the Light, the spiritual heart of the diocese. He is hoping to share with everyone the love and joy of Jesus Christ, by inviting everyone at the cathedral to enter into a closer union with Him. BROTHER SCOTT NORGAARD, OP
Br. Scott is from Phoenix, AZ. He studied Economics at Rice University. He learned about the Dominicans in college and was attracted by their common prayer, charism, and community life. He hopes to get lots of opportunities to meet the people of God and learn about their lives of faith. He worked in adult catechesis with Fr. Brandon at Divine Mercy Parish in Oakland. He is interested in developing the skills to evangelize. He is in his 5th year of formation.
BROTHER NATHANIEL MARIA MAYNE, OP
Br. Nathaniel Maria Mayne, O.P., grew up in Livermore, California in the Oakland Diocese. After graduating from Livermore High School, he attended San Diego State University for a degree in music performance. His main instrument is the double bass, and he played mostly classical music in symphony orchestras. Br. Nathaniel graduated from college in 2017 and entered the Dominican Order. He entered the Dominicans, because he wanted to dedicate his life to contemplating the Truth of God and sharing that with others in hopes of bringing souls to Christ. He is now in his third year in the order, and his second year in simple vows. He hopes
that during his time at the Cathedral, he will be able to get to know the parish community. He also hope to walk with those in RCIA to help immerse them in the Christian life as they prepare to receive the Sacraments of Initiation this Easter. BROTHER PATRICK ROONEY, OP
Br. Patrick is from Oakhurst, CA (just south of Yosemite). He graduated from Thomas Aquinas College in Santa Paula, CA in 2015, and is now in his 5th year of Dominican formation. He entered religious life in order to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and also to grow in his life of prayer and study. During his ministry at the Cathedral, he hope to gain more experience in giving talks and presentations. A fun fact about Br. Patrick is that he can skillfully ride a unicycle!
BROTHER JOSHUA GATUS, OP
Br. Joshua is from the Philippines. His hometown in the United States is Las Vegas, Nevada. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology from the University of Santo Tomas at Manila in 2006. He made his first profession as a Dominican on September 5, 2019. Here at the Cathedral, Br. Joshua helps with the “Plaza Evangelization” bringing the various visitors to the Cathedral to a closer relationship with Jesus Christ. He hopes that his experience at the Cathedral will help him to transmit the beauty of our Faith with courage and joy.
