Why do we abstain from meat on Fridays in Lent? It is a very ancient practice and based on the following belief: Jesus gave His flesh for us on a Friday, so we, out devotion and respect refrain from eating flesh on Fridays. The many and varied practices that exist during Lent, serve only one big purpose: to bring us closer to Jesus during this most holy season. So however you decide to mark Lent this year, make sure you do it for the right reasons. Do not give up things or practice penances as though they were tests in endurance and stamina. Do not give up things for reasons of vanity or physical health — for example, do not give up alcohol in the hope you will lose weight. Whatever you do, and it is good to do something to make you reflect, remember that its ultimate purpose is about coming closer to Jesus. I have decided to make my confession weekly during Lent. I tried that last year and I failed a couple of times but the

frequently. This practice helped me to see how much more I need Jesus. It brought me closer to Him in prayer because it shift the focus on to Him as being my only hope.

¿Por qué nos abstenemos de comer carne los viernes en la Cuaresma? Esta es una práctica muy antigua y está basada en la siguiente creencia: Jesús dio Su carne por nosotros en un viernes, así que, nosotros por devoción y por respeto, nos abstenemos de comer carne los viernes.

Las numerosas y variadas prácticas que existen durante la Cua-resma, sirven solamente un gran propósito: acercarnos a Jesús durante esta, la temporada más santa.

Así que de cualquier manera que usted decida darle atención a la Cuaresma este año, asegúrese de hacerlo por las razones correctas. No deje de hacer cosas o practique penitencias como si fueran pruebas de resistencia y tolerancia. No deje de hacer cosas por razones de vanidad o salud física —por ejemplo, no deje el alcohol con la esperanza de perder peso.

Cualquiera cosa que haga, y es bueno hacer algo para hacerlo a usted reflexionar, recuerde que su propósito final es tratar de acercarlo más a Jesús.

Yo he decidido confesarme semanalmente durante Cuaresma. Lo intenté el año pasado y fallé un par de veces, pero el benefi-cio era que yo hiciera un examen de conciencia con más frecuencia. Esta práctica me ayudó a ver cuánto más necesito a Jesús. Esto me llevó más cerca a Él en oración porque cambió el enfoque hacia Él, siendo mi única esperanza.

Rite of Election/Rito de Elección

Last Sunday, February 14, Bishop George Rassas presided the cemony at Holy Name Cathedral in which Raimundo Avila, St. Jerome’s parishioner and member of the RCIA program was accepted formally to be confirmed during the ceremony on Holy Saturday. Let us pray for Raimundo and for those who are preparing to receive the Sacraments on Easter Vigil.

Stations of the Cross in English every Friday during Lent after the 7:15am Mass.

Praying Lent Together Lent is a penitential season and our prayer, even at Mass, needs to be more reflective. During Lent at all Sunday Masses we will use Penitential Act A (I confess to almighty God) followed by the sung version of the Lord Have Mercy. The choirs will lead the singing of the Lord Have Mercy at all Masses during Lent, the memorial acclamation that will be said or on Sundays, sung, will be “Save us Savior of the world for by your cross and resurrection, you have set us free”. All music at Mass during Lent will be subdued and reflective.

La Cuaresma es un tiempo de penitencia y nuestra oración, incluso en Misa, necesita ser más reflexiva. Durante la Cuaresma y en todas las Misas Dominicales, vamos a usar el Acto Penitencial A (Yo confieso ante Dios Todopoderoso) seguido por la versión cantada de Señor Ten Piedad. Seremos Transformados La manifestación de la Gloria de Dios en el Evangelio de hoy está llena de una luz que a la vez asombra y revela. Jesús, transfigurado en el Monte Tabor, llena de su energía a los apóstoles adormecidos, que ven la visión, pero no la saben captar. Es perdonable que no capten del todo el signi-ficado de esta extraordinaria visión de Jesús transfigurado, entre Moisés y Elías. Aquí, en el monte santo, se resumen la Ley y los profetas.

Hoy esa transfiguración se nos ofrece y se nos entrega. Como nos recuerda san Pablo, somos nosotros los que vamos a ser transformados. Hoy se nos presentan la luz y la vida de la Resurrección, para que no nos descorazonemos, no sea que nos quedemos del todo dormidos. Este domingo ya mira hacia la Pascua. Mira hacia la transformación. Nos pide que levantemos la cabeza, y reconozcamos al Señor Resucitado como nuestra luz y salvación.

We are to be Transformed Today’s showing forth of God’s glory is filled with a light that astonishes and reveals. Jesus transfigured on Mount Tabor energizes even the sleepy apostles, who see but cannot get hold of it. They can be forgiven for not ap-prehending the full meaning of this extraordinary vision of a transfigured Jesus with Elijah and Moses. The whole of the Law and prophets is summed up here on this mountain.

The transfiguration on Mount Tabor is handed over to us this Sunday. As Paul reminds us, it is we who are to be transformed. The light and life of the Resurrection are set forth here so we do not lose heart and fall entirely asleep. This Sunday looks to Easter. It looks to transformation. It asks us to lift up our heads and acknowledge the risen Lord as our light and our salvation.

Lenten Regulations on Fasting and Abstinence Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent. The following fasting and

abstinence regulations are observed:

• Abstinence from meat is observed on Ash Wednes-day, Good Friday, and all the Fridays of Lent by all Catholics 14 years of age and older.

• Fasting is observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics who are 18 years of age but not yet 59 years of age. Those bound by this rule may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are per-mitted as necessary to maintain strength according to one’s needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted.

• The special Paschal fasting and abstinence are ob-served on Good Friday and, where possible, on Holy Saturday. On these days, Christians prepare them-selves by these disciplines in anticipation of the re-newal of their baptismal commitment on Easter.

From its earliest days, the Church has urged the baptized and the catechumens to observe the threefold discipline of fasting, almsgiving, and prayer as a preparation for the celebration of Easter. Failure to observe individual days of penance is not considered serious, but failure to observe any penitential days at all or a substantial number of such days must be considered serious. During Lent, the Church encourages attendance at daily Mass, self-imposed times of fasting, and generosity to local, national, and worldwide programs of sharing.

Reglas para el Ayuno y Abstinencia durante la Cuaresma

El Miércoles de Ceniza indica el inicio de la Cuaresma. Las siguientes reglas de ayuno y abstinencia se deben cumplir:

• Abstinencia de carne para todos los Católicos de 14 años de edad o mayores el Miércoles de Ceniza, todos los viernes de Cuaresma, y el Viernes Santo.

• Ayuno el Miércoles de Ceniza y el Viernes Santo para personas entre 18 y 59 años de edad. No deben comer alimentos sólidos entre comidas y solamente deben comer una comida completa. Podrán ser disculpados por razones serias o enfermedad.

• El ayuno y abstinencia especial Pascual se observan el Viernes Santo y, de ser posible, el Sábado Santo. En estos días, los Cristianos se preparan a través de estas disciplinas en anticipación a la renovación de su com-promiso bautismal en la Pascua.

Durante la Cuaresma, en la que el pueblo cristiano se prepa-ra para celebrar la Pascua y renovar su propia participación en este misterio, se recomienda a todos los fieles cultivar el espíritu penitencial, no sólo interna e individualmente, sino también externa y socialmente, que puede expresarse en la mayor austeridad de vida, en iniciativas de caridad y ayuda

cristiana a través de las parroquias, de Cáritas o de otras instituciones similares.
