    Christmas 2020

    Dear Friends,

Blessings this Christmas Season to one and all!

Twenty-twenty has been a year like no other…and I always heard that 20/20 was perfect vision! Amidst all the mayhem and the tsunami of issues we faced and are still facing, where was the Prince of Peace to be found or can we find Him at all?

When all of us were told to stay at home, wash our hands, wear a mask, and don’t gather in large groups, I began to reflect. Is the Prince of Peace trying to teach us something? Are we supposed to learn something? Well, honestly, yes. The news of great joy that Jesus brings to the whole world is the gift of the Paschal mystery. As we experience the frustration, isolation and exhaustion from the tsunami of issues that have engulfed all of us for most of this year, I have come to realize the news of great joy this Christmas and every Christmas is the reality of his Paschal Mystery. Jesus’ coming is the gift like no other! As Jesus has shared the human experience with us, he invites us to share the divine experience with Him. “Follow Me”, he says to each of us all the way to the cross. If you do that, you will be given a share in my resurrection for all eternity. You cannot tell me that is not “news of great joy”? If we are willing to unite the myriad of emotions we have felt with those of Jesus, we will ultimately experience the joy that Jesus brings.

The Christmas season has always been a time of celebration and giving thanks to God for the gift of his Son as well as a time of thanks to Jesus for giving each of us the gift of experiencing the good and bad events of our lives in a new way – His Paschal Mystery. That helps me keep everything in my life in perspective. My prayer for you is that the same perspective will enable you to live 2021 more joyfully than ever!

My sisters are keeping safe these days as are my nieces and nephews & grand nieces and nephews.

Included in my prayers and Masses each day during the pandemic are the newly married, baptized, parents, grandparents as well as the newly bereaves and the many sick among us.

My prayer for each of you is that you experience the Paschal Mystery each day of the New Year!

    Fr. Tom Dore

One of the highlights of the Christmas season at Saint Pascal Parish was Father Tom Dore’s annual Christmas letter, which reviewed events of the past year with wise and wry commentary. While in the hospital during the recent illness that ultimately took his life, Father Tom expressed concern his Christmas letter, which was already written, would never be seen by all the people he so fondly cherished. We were able to locate our dear friend’s

final Christmas letter, which we now present to you. Merry Christmas, Father Tom! We will miss reading your thoughtful reflections.

FATHER TOM DORE - REST IN PEACE COVID denied the world yet another wonderful soul, Father Tom Dore, who died on December 17. Father Dore joined us at Saint Pascal after retiring from Saint Giles. He was a deeply spiritual man, with a big heart and a big laugh. We will miss him dearly and will always try to keep his advice: Be grateful for the day.

Jefferson/Portage Park and Old Irving Park/Addison Renew My Church Update: December 18, 2020

Discernment Process St. Constance, Our Lady of Victory, St. Pascal and St. Robert Bellarmine Parishes, along with Pope Francis Global Academy, were grouped together and engaged in the Renew My Church (RMC) “Discernment and Decision” process through October 2020. St. Bartholomew, St. Viator, and St. Wenceslaus Parishes were also grouped together and engaged in the RMC “Discernment and Decision” process through October 2020.

Based on their meetings and feedback gathered from the larger parish community, they submitted feedback to the archdiocese. The Archdiocesan Standards and Recommendations Commission, which includes representatives from across the Archdiocese of Chicago, reviewed feedback and other information, including financial summaries, capital needs and parish trends. After this review, the RMC Commission asked the St. Bartholomew Grouping Feedback and Discernment (GFDT) members to join the first grouping for additional discernment to allow a more fruitful response to Hispanic ministry needs to the west/northwest.

The adjusted grouping team continued with three additional discernment meetings in November and December and provided an update to the RMC Commission earlier this December. The RMC Commission is grateful for the continued discernment and has since completed a full recommendation.

Cardinal Cupich and Bishop Manz are grateful to the GFDT members of all seven parishes and Fr. Barwikowski, Fr. Wyrzykowski, Fr. Dees, Fr. Fackler, Fr. O’Connell. Fr. Render, and Fr. Arevalos, as well as the parishioners, the Vicariate Team, the Presbyteral Council and RMC Commission who offered feedback through the recent discernment process. Your perseverance was admirable, particularly during these difficult months of the pandemic.

Outcome In the past few weeks, Cardinal Blase J. Cupich, archbishop of Chicago, the archdiocese’s auxiliary bishops, and the archdiocese’s Presbyteral Council met to discuss the Commission’s recommendation. Based upon those discussions and prayerful consideration, Cardinal Cupich made the following decisions regarding the parish and school structures in Jefferson/Portage Park and Old Irving Park/Addison:

St. Constance and St. Robert Bellarmine will unite as a new parish.

St. Bartholomew, Our Lady of Victory, and St. Pascal will unite as a new parish.

St. Viator and St. Wenceslaus will unite as a new parish.

All of the new parishes above will take effect July 1, 2021. Each new parish will be formed under a new name. The new name will be decided by Cardinal Cupich after reviewing options proposed by each new parish’s leadership.

The Renew My Church Commission has additionally recommended:

St. Constance and St. Robert Bellarmine: St. Constance and St. Robert Bellarmine Churches will both continue to host a regular Mass schedule for the

newly united parish. This united parish will be the host location for all parish-based Polish ministry in these two groupings.

St. Bartholomew, Our Lady of Victory and St. Pascal: St. Bartholomew and St. Pascal Churches will both continue to host a regular Mass schedule for the newly

united parish. The Polish Mass currently at St. Pascal will cease as of July 1, 2021. As part of expanding Hispanic ministry presence west, at least one Spanish language Mass will be celebrated

as part of the regularly weekend Mass schedule at St. Pascal. Regularly scheduled Masses at Our Lady of Victory will cease no later than the first Sunday of Advent 2021.

  • January 3, 2021 Page 5

St. Viator and St. Wenceslaus St. Viator and St. Wenceslaus Churches will both continue to host a regular Mass schedule for the newly

united parish. The school on St. Wenceslaus campus will be marketed for sale to generate proceeds to invest in enhanced

    ministry in the new parish.

    Schools:

All of the schools will continue to operate, with governance changes to align with the new parish structure. St. Robert Bellarmine School will serve as the parish school of the united parish of St. Constance and St. Robert Bellarmine. St. Constance School will continue under its current program and become a school governed by the archdiocese. Both schools will receive pastoral support from the parish priests.

Pope Francis Global Academy will serve as the parish school of the united parish of St. Bartholomew, Our Lady of Victory, and St. Pascal. St. Bartholomew School will continue under its current program and become a school governed by the archdiocese. Both schools will receive pastoral support from the parish priests.

St. Viator will serve as the parish school of the united parish of St. Viator and St. Wenceslaus.

    Parish Structure Rationale

Forming three new parishes from the seven parishes offers a parish structure to meet the needs of each neighborhood, expand the geographic reach for Hispanic ministry further west and north, and continue to support strong Polish ministry within the local area. Each of the three parishes is of relatively similar parishioner size and annual operating revenue.

Concluding regularly scheduled Masses at Our Lady of Victory is deemed necessary by the Commission to create a structure manageable for the parish and to offer a path to explore all options for selling the property to provide resources to invest in ministry in the new parish and reduce expenses.

    School Structure Rationale

None of the schools will have structural change, however enrollment and financial concerns continue to impact St. Constance and St. Bartholomew schools. Generous donors are committed to supporting those schools and their sustainability will be reviewed on an ongoing basis.

School governance changes provide a structure that allows each pastor to have administrative responsibilities for only one school while retaining each school’s pastoral connection to the parish.

Next Steps The archdiocese’s Priests’ Placement Board is actively working to identify candidates to lead each of the three new parishes. Additional information will be shared with each community as it becomes available.

Once a pastor has been named for each of the three new parishes, parish leadership and parishioners will discern possibilities for the name of the new parish, within guidelines provided by the archdiocese, and submit their considerations to Cardinal Cupich for his decision on the permanent name of the new parish.

The united parish community will embark upon the next phase of the renewal process, Operations Transition followed by “Building the New Reality,” to become a stronger, more sustainable presence for the future, capable of reaching more people in their work of making disciples of Jesus Christ, building communities with one another and inspiring witness in the world around us.

    SACRAMENTAL CELEBRATIONS

The celebration of the sacraments is one of the most important gifts that we have, and we look forward to sharing these celebrations with those who are part of our community. Therefore, please note the following: INFANT BAPTISMS: Registration in the parish is a prerequisite. Parents are required to attend a Pre-Baptismal Preparation Session with the celebrant two months prior to the Baptism either in person or Zoom. Arrangements can be made at the Parish Office.

RECONCILIATION: Every Saturday at 9:00 AM

SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY: Either the bride, the groom, or the parent of either must be a registered and active parishioner for at least six months before contacting us to make any arrangements. Allow at least six months to complete wedding arrangements. Arrangements can be made at the Parish Office by the bride and groom.

SACRAMENT OF THE SICK: Anytime a person is facing a serious illness, surgery or hospitalization, it is proper to receive the Sacrament of the Sick. Please contact the parish office. If the office is closed please leave a message on a priest’s voicemail.

GLUTEN FREE HOSTS: Saint Pascal wishes all who are properly disposed to be able to receive the host at Communion time, and join with the others in our parish family without the fear of becoming ill. If you would like to receive a gluten free host, please add your request to the comment on the Mass Reservation sign up form so the priest is aware of your request

MINISTRY OF CARE - HOMEBOUND PARISHIONERS: Please notify the parish office if you know of someone who is unable to join us at Mass and would appreciate having the Eucharist brought to their home. Our Ministers of Care bring Holy Communion to those who are sick and homebound, when conditions permit. During the present health crisis we may not be allowed access to visit people in hospitals or rehabilitation centers, depending on the rules and restrictions of the individual facility, but our prayers go out to all of our parish family during these trying times.

Cancellation of Mass is leading to significant losses in our offertory income, which is placing all our ministries and operations at

significant risk. Many people in our parish and community depend upon your regular, weekly offertory contributions and, during this current challenge, they are needed more than ever. We ask you to prayerfully consider maintaining your regular weekly donation level or even increasing it during these times.

AmazonSmile is a website operated by Amazon with the same products, prices,

and shopping features as on Amazon.com. The difference is that when you shop on AmazonSmile, the AmazonSmile Foundation will donate 0.5% of the purchase price of eligible products to Saint Pascal.

Every item available for purchase on www.amazon.com is also available at the same price on AmazonSmile (smile.amazon.com). You will see eligible products marked “Eligible for AmazonSmile donation” on their product detail pages. See the Saint Pascal website at www.stpascal.org for additional details and to sign in.

Please consider giving online at GiveCentral.org where you can make a weekly offertory contribution to our Saint Pascal

Church family and keep the vital ministries and services we provide going. You can use this website to make paperless donations to our church by using your credit card, debit card and electronic checking payments making either one-time or recurring donations. Thank you to the Respect Life Committee for including the parish's Saint Vincent de Paul pantry in the Giving Tree Program this holiday season. Because of the generosity of our parishioners, we received grocery store gift

cards that will insure that our pantry will be stocked well into the New Year! Thank you also to Cub Scout Pack 3815 and Boy Scout Troop 815 and their leaders who donated food for the pantry and toys for Christmas that were distributed by the Respect Life Committee. We very much appreciate your continuing support of our ministry here at Saint Pascal.

SOCIETY OF SAINT VINCENT DEPAUL - SAINT PASCAL CONFERENCE What happens if we would lead our life as if the star stopped on us? The answer to this question is most startling when we consider the gospel as a whole: what it means and what happens is that the only way to light and life is to die to self so that darkness can be overcome. Life has it sorrows and sufferings. It also has its joys and celebrations: the mystery of salvation has been revealed in Jesus. And in us.

During the first weekend of each month, the Saint Vincent de Paul Society will collect non-perishable food for its pantry. Items may be placed in the blue barrel outside the church building at the Dakin Street exit for those not attending worship in person. Items may be placed in the blue barrel inside the church building at the Dakin Street exit during that time, or any time that the church is open.

The Story of the Chinese Farmer As told by Alan Watts

Once upon a time there was a Chinese farmer whose horse ran away. That evening, all of his neighbors came around to commiserate. They said, “We are so sorry to hear your horse has run away. This is most unfortunate.” The farmer said, “Maybe.”

The next day the horse came back bringing seven wild horses with it, and in the evening everybody came back and said, “Oh, isn’t that lucky. What a great turn of events. You now have eight horses!” The farmer again said, “Maybe.”

The following day his son tried to break one of the horses, and while riding it, he was thrown and broke his leg. The neighbors then said, “Oh dear, that’s too bad,” and the farmer responded, “Maybe.”

The next day the conscription officers came around to conscript people into the army, and they rejected his son because he had a broken leg. Again all the neighbors came around and said, “Isn’t that great!” Again, he said, “Maybe.”

The whole process of nature is an integrated process of immense complexity, and it’s really impossible to tell whether anything that happens will be for the good or bad. We never know what will be the consequence of misfortune; or, we never know what will be the consequences of good fortune.

Can we begin the new year discerning what is the Will of God in both misfortune and good fortune?

EARN A HUGE CREDIT ON YOUR ILLINOIS TAX BILL

If you expect to owe any money at all to the State of Illinois on your 2021 tax return, YOU could make a HUGE impact on our school with relatively LITTLE pain to you!

Any donation toward scholarships for our students, when made specifically through the Invest in Kids Illinois Tax Credit Scholarship program, will earn you a tax credit for 75% of that donation! A tax Credit is way better than a tax exemption because it is a 1:1 credit against the amount that you owe when paying your tax bill, allowing you to essentially be able to redirect 75% of your donation FROM the state TO a Pope Francis Global Academy student by way of a TCS Scholarship. AND, if you make your donation through Empower Illinois by mid-February, your donation will be TRIPLED through a generous, but limited, 2-for-1 matching grant!

For example, a donation of $500 automatically earns you a $325 tax credit to use in place of money when you go to pay the state for your tax bill. If completed by mid-February, a $500 donation also becomes $1,500 to the school through the matching grant. Your net out of pocket cost is $125 and the school’s net gain is $1,500 in scholarship funding! Contact Jodi Thyen at [email protected] to find out more!

    APPLICATIONS NOW BEING ACCEPTED!

    CONSIDERING A SWITCH?

If you have ever considered a Catholic school education for your family, but cost has been an issue, we’d love to talk to you about various opportunities for help, which might make Pope Francis Global Academy a possiblity for your family.

One big opportunity which is needs-based and available on a first come-first-served basis is the Illinois Tax Credit Scholarship through either Empower Illinois or the Big Shoulders Fund. The application dates are hard and fast for these scholarships, which can cover between 50% and 100% of tuition. www.bigshouldersfundsgo.org - Application opens on January 12 at 8 am.

www.empowerillinois.org - Application process opens online on January 13 at 6:30 pm.

Contact Jodi Thyen at [email protected] for more information!

The students of Pope Francis wish you all a Very Happy New Year!
