of prayer and praise, listening and learning with Sr. Mary Ann

Figlino. Come join her in looking between the lines of familiar

Gospels and discover the hidden humor that is sometimes

found there. Meet Jesus and the unique way He welcomes the

unlikely into his circle of friends. Hopefully, we will also find and

enjoy ourselves in His company. Lunch will be provided.

PARISH SCHOOL OF RELIGION (PSR): We are nearing

the beginning of a new catechetical year. Classes begin

Aug 13th. Take a registration form from the back table, fill

it out, and turn it in. Registrations will begin this

weekend, Aug 5th & 6th, after the Masses. PSR meets

Sunday Mornings during the academic school year, 9:30 –

10:45am, for children Pre-K - 8th Grade. We are in need of

a few substitutes. You need not be a theologian, just

someone practicing the Faith and willing to that

Faith. Come join us in spreading the Good News of Jesus to

Deacon Chris Hassel will join us the weekend of

August 12-13. We don’t have his schedule yet but

he will preach at some of the weekend masses.

We have crossed the one million dollar mark for

our Forward With Faith campaign to renovate the

church and the school. Thank you for all who

have contributed! In the next month we hope to

reach out to those we have not heard from so

that each family in the parish has a chance to be

involved in this mission.

Transfiguration

What kind of “mountain top” experiences have you had in your life? Your wedding, a perfect vacation, a state championship, a beautiful moment in nature. I will always remember being ordained a deacon in St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. I remember visiting the Swiss Alps and seeing mountain tops emerging from the clouds. As beautiful as those moments are we cannot stay in them forever. You cannot remain at the altar at your wedding forever, you must go off and live life. You cannot stand on the stage at graduation. You must de-scend the stairs and go use your education. God gives us these mountain top moments to empower us as we take on the task of everyday life.

Today Jesus takes some of the Apostles on a mountain top experience. As we hear the Gospel we might think, "What does this have to do with me?" Moses, Elijah, and Jesus are figures from thousands of years ago. How does the Transfiguration affect me? It is important to see that this scene did not occur for Jesus' sake, it occurred for our sake. As the glory of Jesus appeared, it encouraged Peter, John and James. It is meant to en-courage us and transfigure us. We might ask, "God, how do you want to transfigure me?"

The most exciting place to be is in the center of God's will. Why is that so strange? Because you are thinking, "God is boring. God doesn't want us to have any fun. Following the commandments is so stifling." You might never say those words but somewhere deep inside you may think like this.

Look at the lives of Peter, James and John. They were all fishermen when Jesus called them. They worked on the Sea of Galilee and day after day went out in their boats and lowered their nets for a catch. The afternoons were spent cleaning the fish and the nets. One afternoon they were mending their fishing nets when Jesus walked along the shore and said, "I have a job for you. Instead of catching fish I want you to catch men."

Jesus issued a challenge to them. Come and try a new way of life. Live the life I have for you. They said yes and their lives were never the same. They would see miracles. They would hear the teaching of Jesus. They would see people raised from the dead.

But they would also know danger. Jesus asked these three Apostles into the Garden of Gethsemane. These three Apostles were in the inner garden with Jesus. They would see their Lord arrested and crucified. They would be chased by soldiers. They were thrown in jail. James would be one of the first apostles martyred as King Herod Agrippa I had him put to death. Peter would go to Rome to spread the Gospel. There he would be crucified upside down. John would be sent to prison on an island and die there in captivity. You could call Peter, James and John many things but you could never call them bored.

Jesus knew they would need grace and strength to get through these times of trials. In the Gospel we see a moment of grace in this mountain top experience. The Apostles are still unsure of the mission and iden-tity of Jesus when they encounter the glorious moment of the Transfiguration. What is the effect of this mo-ment? Peter, James and John had their very lives transfigured by God. Today, on the Mount of Transfigura-tion, God the Father says, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him." God says the same thing to us today. Listen to Jesus. Do you want your life to be transfigured? God has plans for you. You can never know what those plans are unless you listen to Him.

We chose to listen to many voices. We listen to the radio, we buy music. We go to the movies. But are we listening to the voice of God? To do anything less than the will of God will bore you! If you're bored, tune into God. This season is a time to silence our hearts and listen for the voice of God. He has plans to transfigure your life forever! May we be open to God's voice this season of our lives.

Once again, St. Francis Xavier School will be selling

car raffle tickets for Davis Love's Friends of the

Foundation Challenge. Tickets are $20.00 each and

St. Francis Xavier School will receive twenty dollars

for every ticket sold! Our goal is to sell 1,500 tickets!

There will be other charities selling these tickets throughout the com-

munity, but we ask you to support our Catholic school by purchas-

ing your tickets at the church or school office. Thank you for your gen-

erous support!

Cursillo (pronounced Cur-see-yo) is an encounter with Christ. Cursillo is a movement within the Catholic Church which makes it possible for people to live what is fundamental for being a Christian and to live it together. The Cursillo Move-ment helps people discover and fulfil their personal voca-tions. It promotes the creation of core groups of Christians who leaven their environments with the Gospel. In Spanish, Cursillo means a “little course.” It starts on a Thursday evening and ends on Sunday evening. During those three days, participants listen to talks given by priests, deacons and lay persons and join in small group discussions. The topics deal with life, the Christian ideal, the Catholic Faith and the Christian approach to the world. Daily Mass and visits to the Blessed Sacrament are availa-ble. Cursillo continues with a method to work together, bringing other men and women to know and love Christ. An invita-tion is given to form a small group which is joined to a larg-er Christ-centered community in the Diocese of Savannah and around the world.

Sacrament Requirements

Baptism: Parishioners wishing to have a child baptized should be registered in the parish and should contact a member of the clergy as early as three months before the birth of their child. First Penance and Eucharist: Normally received in the 2nd Grade. Parents should contact the Director of Religious Education. Enrollment in Catholic School, qualifying home school, or Parish School of Religion (PSR) is required for at least 2 years leading up to the reception of the sacraments. Confirmation: Normally received in the 8th Grade. Parents should contact Director of Religious Educa-tion. Enrollment in Catholic School, qualifying home school, or Parish School of Religion (PSR) is required for at least 2 years leading up to the reception of the sacrament. RCIA/Adult Confirmation: Adults interested in becoming Catholic or in need of the sacrament of Confir-mation should contact a priest or deacon. The RCIA is a journey toward full initiation into the Catholic faith, and it has al-

ternating periods and steps. The four periods prepare participants for the four

subsequent steps into the great tradition of the Catholic Church.

I. Period of Inquiry

Step 1: Rite of Acceptance II. Period of Breaking Open the Word Step 2: Rite of Election III. Period of Purification and Enlightenment Step 3: Celebration of the Easter Sacraments of Catholic Initiation IV. Period of Mystagogy

The RCIA is a journey of invitation and initiation not indoctrination. Throughout

the journey, you are encouraged to prayerfully discern if God is calling you to

continue.

The RCIA is intended for:

Those who have never been baptized in a faith tradition Those baptized in a faith tradition other than Catholic Those baptized Catholic as infants who have been inactive since that time

and have not received the Sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation You are welcome to explore the RCIA journey at any time.

To be a registered member of a Parish is to

have a sense of belonging to a family.

Newcomers are requested to register at the

Church Office soon after arrival, to meet the staff

and learn about your new parish. In the time of

family sickness, death or special need,

parishioners are asked to notify the Church

office. If requested, Holy Communion will be

brought to anyone desiring to receive the

Eucharist but are unable to attend Mass for

serious reasons.
