Religious Education - A Fresh Approach to Formation Friendship

This is a question I have pondered for years: What constitutes a true friend? Perhaps it would be helpful for you to pause for a moment and reflect. Who are your true friends? What makes them good friends? As a child, I thought friendship was about hanging out together all the time and sticking up for each other when others were critical or cruel. In my adolescence, I thought a true friend was someone who liked everything you liked and never did anything to upset you. But as an adult, I have learned that the defining characteristic of true friendship is someone who encourages you to be all you can be and challenges you to become the-best-version-of-yourself. It is these people who tend to energize and invigorate us. What types of people do you like being with? What types of people energize you? During this Easter season, we are called to renew our Baptismal Promises. Pope Francis continually reminds us, that we are ‘Called to Action’ to live according to Gospel teachings and truly evangelize. What makes an Easter People? Am I an Easter person? In our journey towards a conversion of the heart to living a stewardship way of life we must ask ourselves if we are living out the values of stewardship. Is prayer a part of my daily life? Am I demonstrating Christian kindness by being hospitable to others? Am I striving to continually learn and stretch my knowledge of our Faith? Finally, what am I doing to be of service to those less fortunate than myself? (Rediscover Catholicism by Matthew Kelly)

Casting Lots

for the Seamless Garment Crosses to Carry

On Palm Sunday, in parish churches around the world, voices from the past shouted, “Crucify Him! Crucify Him!” We knew what was coming. We know the story, yet we listen again, seeking an inward space where we can imagine the Gospel from a new perspective. I chose the perspective of Simon, the passer-by who was “pressed into service” to carry Jesus’ cross. I asked myself, “What would it have been like to carry the cross of Jesus?” “Whose cross might I help carry?” “What men and women in my life, or on the margins, have a cross that must be lifted?” Pope Francis’ Evangelii Gaudium calls us to “get involved by word and deed in people’s daily lives; to bridge distances, and embrace human life, touching the suffering flesh of Christ in others.” (“Becoming Catholic Again, Connecting the Faith We Were Taught with the Faith that We Live”; Catherine Weicher Brunell, Loyola Press 2012)

For more information on the Seamless Garment Ministry, please contact Tom & Elsbeth Germanson at 205.565.3456.

Stewardship: Parishioners

Answering God’s Call A parishioner, who is a retired teacher, began volunteering her time at Holy Family Cristo Rey High School to tutor a few students who needed help. In her words she feels she is a witness to God’s loving presence...these kids are ‘humble, sincere, and so gracious’ for any help they can receive. This time she shares with them is an opportunity to just talk with them, to be a sounding board, and to share bits of wisdom learned in life. She shares her gift, but she also receives from them. Please submit your stewardship story examples to [email protected]. They may be edited for space consideration.

Wednesday Dinners Join us at 5:30 pm in Deasy Hall for dinner. Adults and teens $5, children $3, those 7 and under eat free. Come for a delicious meal and fellowship.
