PASTOR’S COLUMN
Mercy Mondays - Beginning Monday, confessions will be
heard every Monday evening during Lent from 7 to 8pm at
St. Paul Church. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is also
offered here at St. Paul every Saturday morning from
8:30am to 9:30am and every Saturday afternoon from 3 to
4pm. Every parish in the Archdiocese is offering times for
the Sacrament of Reconciliation on each Monday during
Lent. You can find out those times and places by going to
http://www.confessionmondays.com/
Stay Here and Pray - In the time after the Last Supper and
before Jesus was arrested he prayed fervently in the Garden
of Gethsemane and asked his apostles to do the same. On
the Mercy Mondays, the Blessed Sacrament will also be ex-
posed on the altar so you can also use that time for some
quiet prayer before the Blessed Sacrament. This past Sun-
day, our 1
st
year Confirmation students had a retreat here at
the parish. I thought it quite enlightening that a good number
of them found the 30 minutes of adoration before the
Blessed Sacrament to be a very rewarding time. Like them,
you might not get a lot of quiet time in your hectic schedule.
So just come and be in the Lord’s presence.
Archbishop’s Annual Appeal - In recognizing what our
God has done for us and the blessings shared with us we
reach out especially to those in need. As a parish and pa-
rishioners in the Archdiocese of Hartford, one of the ways
we are asked to do that is to support the Archbishop’s Annu-
al Appeal (AAA). The theme this year is Growing in Faith,
Giving in Love. In Archbishop Blair’s letter he wrote: “We are
all part of God’s family and we have a responsibility to care
for one another, especially by providing for the spiritual, mor-
al and material well-being of each and all.”
Last year 591 parishioners made gifts and pledges totaling
$108,161 thereby surpassing our goal of $108,000. The
average gift was $183. Thank you to all who donated!
As a parish we have many outreach ministries to those who
are less fortunate. Yet we also know that there is so much
more that can and needs to be done. The AAA helps tackle
situations beyond our local area and helps address issues
that as a parish are beyond our capabilities. I am hopeful
that once again this year we at St. Paul will exceed our goal.
As we strive to Grow in Faith this Lent, let us also Give in
Love to our brothers and sisters in Christ who need our help.
I ask those who have given in the past to do so once again
this year, and if possible to increase your gift. To those who
have not given in the past, please make a gift this year. All
gifts, regardless of the amount, will be a help to those in
need. May the Lord bless you for your generosity.
Lent - Stations of the Cross - Are you familiar with Stations
of the Cross? When was the last time that you took notice of
them on the walls of our churches? Did you know that there
is a connection to the Franciscans and the Stations of the
Cross? From the earliest of days, followers of Jesus told the
story of his passion, death and resurrection. When pilgrims
came to see Jerusalem, they
were anxious to see the sites
where Jesus had been, including
the way he took up to Calvary.
Following in the footsteps of the
Lord along the Via Crucis (Way of
the Cross) or Via Dolorosa
(Sorrowful Way), became an important part of the pilgrimage
visit. Stations, as we know them today, came about when it
was no longer easy or even possible to visit the holy sites.
Within the Franciscan tradition, Stations of the Cross were
part of the Lenten devotional soon after St. Francis’ return
from the Holy Land in 1221. The Franciscans became active
in the development of the devotion of the Stations of the
Cross when they were granted custody of the sacred sites of
Jerusalem in 1343. During the 15th and 16th centuries the
Franciscans began to build a series of outdoor shrines in
Europe to duplicate their counterparts in the Holy Land. The
number of stations varied; seven was common. These were
usually placed, often in small buildings, along the approach
to a church. In 1686, in answer to their petition, Pope Inno-
cent XI granted to the Franciscans the right to erect stations
within their churches. In 1731, Pope Clement XII extended
to all churches the right to have the stations, provided that,
with the consent of the local bishop, a Franciscan priest
erected them. It would also be Clement XII who would fix
the number of stations at 14. One friar, St. Leonard of Port
Maurice, expressed his zeal by erecting 571 sets of stations
between 1731 and 1751, becoming known as the “preacher
of the way of the cross.” Benedict XIV in 1742 exhorted all
priests to enrich their churches with so great a treasure, and
there are few churches now without the Stations. (Catholic
Encyclopedia)
Lent of course is a very appropriate time to pray the Stations
of the Cross though it can be done any time during the year.
Some adopt it as a prayer on all Fridays of the year. By
praying the Stations we make a little pilgrimage along the
Via Dolorosa being reminded of just how much Jesus went
through on his way to Calvary and of course just how much
he loves us. I invite you to join us in praying the Stations
during Lent. There are many opportunities. Each Friday of
Lent they are prayed at 7pm at Sacred Heart Church. The
school children come over on Friday afternoons to pray the
stations. On Good Friday our school children will do their
live re-enactment of the Stations at 7pm. I encourage you
not to pass up these opportunities to contemplate, and enter
into, the mystery of Jesus’ love for you.

MASS INTENTIONS
Annual End of the Year Donations - As of February 23
rd
,
382 families or individuals have donated $57,109 to our
Annual End of the Year Appeal for the Parish. The average
gift thus far is $150. Your support is still needed, and all
gifts are important, so if you have not yet made your
gift please consider what you can do. It is helpful to our
staff if you include the response card with your gift.
CT March for Life - The inaugural Connecticut March for
Life will take place on Wednesday, April 15
th
in Hartford.
See page 6 for all of the information. Mark and Mary-Jane
Duplin and our Culture of Life group has worked together
with the companion ministry at St. Dominic’s in Southington
to arrange for a bus to take parishioners from both parishes
to Hartford and back. There is no cost to you to ride the
bus. See page 6 for more information and how to reserve a
spot on the bus. Each parish has 26 spots on the bus.
Final Thoughts - As I write this still no verdict
on the Red Sox. Opening Day is March 26
th
. I
do not have a clue about the NCAA men’s bas-
ketball tourney as ranked team after ranked
team gets beat by unranked opponents almost
nightly. As the athletes train for perishable crowns let us
use this time of Lent for some good spiritual training so that
an imperishable crown will await us at the end of our jour-
neys in this life. Have a blessed week and Lent. - Fr. Joe

First Year Confirmation Retreat Inspires
through Variety, Song and Small Groups
The theme of this year’s Confirmation retreat focused
on how we need to rely on our Father as children of
God. Students were given their choice of group talks
led by 4 guest speakers, viewed video skits shown on
the church’s drop down screens and entered into
deeper discussions in their small groups, where faith
was strengthened and significant connections were
formed.
Students were blessed throughout the entire event,
but Eucharistic Adoration was reported to be, by far,
the most impactful element of the night. Live music
enhanced the experience.
The 20 volunteers, comprised of St. Paul catechists,
youth ministry core team members, and men’s group
members, did an amazing job facilitating small groups,
directing students where to go next, and pouring into
our kids’ hearts.
The Holy Spirit did much during this sacred time, and
we are so thankful for the opportunity to help guide our
students’ in their faith journey! Thank you to everyone
who responded to the request on the Parish Facebook
page to pray for the students during the retreat.
