IN OUR PARISH

PARISH RESPONSE TO COLD, FLU AND CORONAVIRUS Since we are in cold and flu season and since everyone is watching the Coronavirus closely, we wanted to update you on how our parish is responding: 1) Our Facilities Team is diligently cleaning and disinfecting commonly-touched surfaces. (Read more in this week's Parish Projects.); 2) The obligation to attend Sunday Mass does not hold when you are sick or experiencing symptoms of sickness. We need to protect the elderly and immunocompromised members of our community, so please do not attend Mass or other large functions if you are sick.; 3) Shaking hands during the Sign of Peace is optional. Please do not feel pressured to shake hands if you are not comfortable doing so.; 4) We will continue to offer both the Body and Blood of Christ during Mass, but you are not required to receive from the cup, if you are not comfortable doing so. The Eucharist is fully present in both the Body and the Blood.; 5) Of course, we ask that you practice good hygiene. Wash your hands, cover your coughs and sneezes, and take care not to touch common surfaces more than necessary. If you have any questions, please contact the Parish Office. Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our community safe and healthy!

PARISH OFFICE HOURS – During the week of March 23-27, St. Matthew School will be on Spring Break, and our Parish Office will have adjusted business hours: Monday, 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.; Tuesday, 8:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m.; Wednesday, 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.; Thursday, 8:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m.; and Friday, 8:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. We wish everyone a safe, restful, and healthy Spring Break!

CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES COLLECTION – Next week, our parish will take up The Catholic Relief Services Collection (CRSC). Funds from this collection provide food to the hungry, support displaced refugees, and bring Christ's love and mercy to all people here and abroad. Next week, please give generously to CRSC and help Jesus in disguise. Learn more about the collection at www.usccb.org/catholic-relief.

PARISH LENTEN ACTIVITY – Household items are being collected for St. Matthew Charitable Works Ministry, St. Philip Food Pantry and JOIN, the emergency aid office for the inner-city. Canned soup, vegetables and fruit are items that are greatly needed by our Charitable Works. Drop-off boxes are located in the School and the vestibule at the south entrance to the Church.

ST. MATTHEW CHURCH GAHANNA, OHIO

BISHOP ROBERT BARRON’SPIVOTAL PLAYERS

Bishop Fulton J. Sheen and Flannery O'Connor

*Notice the change of dates!*

ARE COMING TO ST. MATTHEW!(Free event)

CATHOLICISM: The Pivotal Players is a multi-part series that illumines a handful of saints, artists, mystics, and scholars who not only shaped the life of the Church but changed the course of western civilization.

Bishop Fulton J. SheenThe Communicator

Long before the Internet and social media, Fulton Sheen pioneered Catholic evangelization through the media. At a time when most preachers spoke only from pulpits, Sheen used electronic media as a means to reach far beyond the parish walls. His innovative radio and television programs, beamed out to believers and skeptics alike, reached upwards of 30 million people per week. Sheen had a gift for spreading the faith clearly and persuasively, and he paved the path for today's media evangelists.

Flannery O'ConnorThe Storyteller

Flannery O'Connor's influence on contemporary culture, particularly literature and film, is profound. Her novels and short stories have been described as shocking, convoluted, funny, and violent, and they are filled with unforgettably strange characters. But they are also, from beginning to end, haunted by Christ. O'Connor radically changes our idea of what religious fiction can be. Her startling prose awakens us to sin and, consequently, to the need for salvation.Join Bishop Barron as he traces the lives and contributions of these two pivotal players.

PARISH PROJECTS

As good stewards of your generosity, the Facilities Team is pleased to provide you regular updates on St. Matthew campus projects, improvements, ongoing initiatives and enhancements. What is our team doing in response to the Coronavirus? During the flu outbreak several months ago, we implemented best practices for disinfecting and cleaning our school and church. We added hand sanitizers, increased daily cleaning of restrooms and public areas, and we regularly wipe down door handles, seats and desks. Anticipating shortages of disinfectant wipes, sprays and gloves, a significant inventory has been established over the past couple weeks. We are prepared for any changes in the local threat levels or virus control recommendations.Because our campus includes a school and church, we are concerned about all ages from Pre-K to our most seasoned parishioners. Right now, colds and the flu are bigger problems for our children than COVID-19. As we get older, the risks of serious illness do increase and so should our focus on prevention. As with other viruses, the best ways to protect ourselves and our families are to: 1) Avoid contact with people who are sick; 2) Wash hands well and often. Wash for at least 20 seconds with soap and water or use hand sanitizer. Teach kids to do the same; 3) Try not to touch your eyes, nose, and mouth, especially if you haven't washed your hands; 4) Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that people touch a lot; 5) If you don’t feel well, or have a slight fever, please stay home and rest.Shouldn’t we be spending our funds on mortgage and maintenance and not on beautification projects like paintings and murals? In fact, we are. A large portion of our budget is allocated to loan payments and operating expenses. Large projects like the new parish kitchen were underwritten by the Bishop’s Annual Appeal and several large individual donations. The school LED conversion was underwritten by the Diocese and is being paid back with electric cost savings. The Beautification Project (including paintings and murals), Stations of the Cross, music monitors, Gathering Space information screen, were all listed in our Parish Wish Book and paid for by individuals wanting to support these initiatives. Our Parish Wish Book is currently being updated with additional improvement projects awaiting sponsors. Thanks to donations to specific improvement projects, our Sanctuary is becoming a spiritually rich environment to worship and meditate. We appreciate this opportunity to provide these updates and welcome suggestions for facility enhancements. Please contact George Harvey at [email protected].

GOLDEN MUSTANGS 55+ GROUP – Join us for our next meeting this Thursday, March 19. We will attend 8:30 a.m. Mass, followed by a light breakfast in the St. Anthony Room. We will have a short meeting then return to Church for a Lenten tradition, Stations of the Cross. Please join us and share the meeting with old familiar friends and meet new 55+ friends. If you have any questions, please contact Paul & Joan Rovnak at 614-475-4785 or [email protected]. Come and bring a friend!

LENT IS A TIME TO RETURN – This Lent, we invite the parish to reflect on these words from the prophet Joel: "Return to the Lord, your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, abounding in steadfast love, and relenting in punishment." Lent is the perfect time for people to return to the Church in preparation to meet the Risen Christ at Easter. We are here to welcome everyone, no matter where they are in their faith journey. Starting on Ash Wednesday, invitations to come home will be available in the Gathering Space. Please take one (or more) and invite family and friends who have been away to join you in celebrating Jesus’ triumph over sin and death. We will also have small handouts available with some suggestions for how to talk to people about returning to the Church. We hope to provide additional information in the future that can help us learn how to have these difficult conversations, and, most importantly, how to listen. For more information, please contact Pat Martin at [email protected].

ST. MATTHEW CHURCH GAHANNA, OHIO

ENRICH YOUR LENT BY ENTHRONINGTHE SACRED HEART OF JESUS IN YOUR HOME

“In the Heart of the Redeemer we adore God’s love for humanity, His will for universal salvation, His infinite mercy.” Pope Benedict XVI

At the recent Men’s and Women’s Conferences, you heard a moving testimony about the fruits to be realized from enthroning the Sacred Heart of Jesus in your home. Throughout the Diocese, hundreds of families have done so, and have come to know more deeply the Heart of the Redeemer.

Among the 12 promises Jesus made to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque during her visions of the Sacred Heart in the 1670s, He said, “I will bless every place in which an image of my Heart is exposed and honored. I will establish peace in their homes. I will comfort them in all their afflictions.”

Who could pass up an offer like that?

As you engage in greater prayer, fasting and almsgiving during Lent, what could be a better way to further enrich the season than to Enthrone the Sacred Heart in your home? To learn more, or to schedule your enthronement, contact any of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart in the parish: Jeff and Rita Klein – [email protected] or 614-496-7408; Mark and Beth Huddy – [email protected] or 740-964-0126; or Frank and Judeen Hartge – [email protected] or 614-397-4692. Or visit welcomehisheart.com.

Please include the names of everyone in the photo. We don't care if it's a formal portrait – we'll take anything that shows your lovely faces! Thank you!

JOIN FR. PETER FOR A ONCE IN A LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY! On June 12-23, 2020, Fr. Peter will host a group of pilgrims on an experience of holiness and healing to Fatima and Lourdes, continuing on to the Passion Play in Oberammergau. VISITING MINISTRY - Saint Matthew Parish has numerous care facilities for the elderly within its boundaries. In these care centers as well as in private homes, there are numerous parishioners who could enjoy a visitor every once in a while. When I go to visit or to take Communion, these elderly are so appreciative. Please consider becoming a part of our Visiting Ministry and sharing a half hour of your time each week or every other week with someone who is lonely. If you are interested, please contact Carol Ann Lombardi at 614-478-4328 or [email protected].

PLEASE HELP US KEEP YOUR RECORDS CURRENT! In an effort to ensure that our Parish database stays current, we are requesting that you update the Parish Roster form when you have a life event change such as change of address, marital status, birth of a child, etc. The form can be accessed via http://www.stmatthew.net/parish-roster-update or under Quick Links on Saint Matthew’s main page. If you have questions, please call the Parish Office at 614-471-0212. We appreciate your time, cooperation and commitment to the parish.

IF A FAMILY MEMBER IS SICK OR SERIOUSLY ILL, consider contacting the Parish Office at 614-471-0212 for one of the priests to administer the Sacrament of Holy Eucharist and the Anointing of the Sick. Due to HIPAA privacy laws, hospitals no longer notify church offices when parishioners are admitted. As well, in the case of serious illness, families are encouraged to contact us early allowing the priest and patient to talk about any spiritual needs they may have, including receiving the Sacrament of Penance.

THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT MARCH 15, 2020

A FREE MINI-BIBLE STUDY FOR THE SEASON OF LENTGet the most out of the Word of God that you will be hearing next weekend for the 4th Sunday of Lent: The Healing of the Blind Man. Sessions for this lesson will be held on Thursday, March 19 and Sunday, March 22 (See below for more details). Lent is the perfect season to join in. To view a portion of the video for any week, go to https://catholicproductions.com/blogs/mass-readings-explained-year-a.

Here is a sample of what you missed in last week’s session from the 3rd Sunday in Lent, The Samaritan Woman at the Well.

Quote from Dr. Brant Pitre:“There are a couple of points we want to highlight here. Notice the importance of the well, that John makes a point of telling you that Jesus is not just going to meet a woman at a well, he is sitting down beside a particular well, and that is Jacob's well. For an ancient Jewish reader, it is so critical for us to recognize that just the very mention of Jesus and a well would conjure up stories from the Old Testament where wells were important. And if you go back to wells in the Old Testament, you'll see something very interesting. Whenever you have a man at a well and a woman comes along, you're going to inevitably end up with a wedding. It's a nuptial theme. So for example, Abraham's servant meets Isaac's future bride Rebecca at a well, Moses meets his future bride Zipporah at a well in the book of Exodus 4, and then finally and most important of all, Jacob, in the book of Genesis 29, meets Rebecca, his future bride and the future mother of Israel, at a well, where he moves the stone and waters her flocks in a show both of his strength but also his charity and concern for her. They eventually get married and become the mother and father of Israel. Jacob’s name is changed to Israel and Rachel is the matriarch of the people of God. So, if you're a Jew, just after reading these few verses, what you would be queued up to expect here is a man plus a well and a woman coming along, that there's going to be a wedding, that there's going to be a marriage, that there is going to be a nuptial relationship. Keep your eye on that because that's exactly what is about to happen. Although, it's going to be no ordinary woman and, in Jesus' case, no ordinary man that are going to enter into this dialogue near Jacob’s well.”
