Jesus said to the crowd, “Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life….” We can hardly blame the crowd for their shock at this statement — eating the Flesh and drinking the Blood of our Lord should cause us a bit of a shock. Yet how easy it is to show up at Mass Sunday after Sunday, receiving the Eucharist as simply part of a weekly routine.

If we really spent time contemplating the gift our Lord is offering us in this sacrament, we would be awestruck at the love and power in this gift. Through it, our Lord is giving us the very best He has to give — Himself. Not even the greatest theological scholar or the holiest of saints can fully understand this mystery.

Thankfully, we don’t need to be a saint or a scholar to receive this gift. But we should do our best to receive the Eucharist with gratitude. And we can look to today’s readings to glean two fundamental principles for becoming better Christian stewards.

The Eucharist is the foundation for a stewardship way of life. Through His gift of the Eucharist, God fills us with His love and strength. This love and strength empower us to live as generous stewards — to be faithful to the ministries we serve in, joyful in material giving, and offer our very best to our families and secular work.

The Eucharist is the ultimate inspiration for a stewardship way of life. When we contemplate this gift of God, we will want to make a joyful return to Him. Mass will become anything but routine and we will live each day as His passionate disciples.

In addition to the current invitation to fast on Fridays, participants are encouraged to pray one Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be for the intention of the Novena, which is that the U.S. Supreme Court will move our nation closer to the day when every human being is protected in law and welcomed in life. For more information on each of the Fridays of this Novena, please go to www.usccb.org/issues-and-action and search under the tab “Take Action Now.” At 8:15 PM, we will now include prayers for our children and for the healing of our Church during these trying times.

HIGH SCHOOLERS - THIS IS FOR YOU!!!

How do I know God is real? Why be Catholic? Why tell my sins to a

priest? Why do I have to go to Mass? Where do I go from here? These

are just some of the tough questions that today’s

high school students are faced with regarding their

Catholic faith. Beginning this fall, the Saint

Joseph Religious Education Program will be

offering Chosen. This program takes young

people on a journey through the entire Catholic

faith in all its richness and vitality. Students will be

captivated by the story, from Creation all the way

through salvation history, and they will come to

see how the sacraments, prayer, and discipleship are the keys to a happy

and fulfilling life. The goal of Chosen is deepening teenagers

understanding of Catholicism in the hope of making them lifelong

disciples of Christ. Its carefully designed methodology features highly

effective and engaging material conveyed through videos, discussion, and

classroom experience. Featuring twelve of the top youth experts in the

Church today and filmed in more than 50 locations, Chosen is unlike any

other program available in the Church today. Sessions will be held on

Wednesdays from 5:00 – 7:00 PM in the Lee Horan Room

beginning September 12th. Chosen is open to ALL high

school students and is free. If you are interested, please

SPONSOR OF THE WEEK We would like to thank:

MyParishApp for sponsoring an advertisement in our parish bulletin.

Please patronize the businesses that underwrite all of the publishing expenses of our weekly bulletin.

The wild what?! That’s right… the Wild Goose! It is a term the ancient Celts had for the Holy Spirit. And if you allow him, the Wild Goose will lead you on an adventure greater than you can imagine. The Spirit will lead you to a place of mercy, healing, peace, and presence. The Holy Spirit has been given to us not as a possession to be tamed or controlled, but rather as a Person that will lead us to the Heart of God.

The Wild Goose series will help you experience a deeper relationship with the Person of the Holy Spirit, and as you come to experience God’s presence and power this very same Spirit will transform you and bring you freedom.

Saint Joseph Parish is happy to host several episodes of the Wild Goose series this summer. Each will consist of prayer, a video presentation, and small group discussion. No registration is necessary...feel free to drop in any dates you’re available. If you can’t attend sessions in person, we encourage you to watch them on FORMED.

Tuesday, August 21: 6:30 PM Brindle Hall The Spirit Remembers & Where is the Wild Goose leading YOU?

Saint Joseph Parish Honors Our Active Duty Military!

In the narthex of our Church, we proudly display photos of our parishioners who are currently serving in all branches of our United States Military. If you have a family member who is currently on active duty, and would like them included in the display, please drop off their picture in the weekend collection basket or at the Parish Office; please include their name, rank, branch, and where they are serving.

The Knights of Columbus would like to send them care packages as well. Please contact Warren Stephens, [email protected], for details.

May God continue to watch over and protect our nations’ military members and their families.

CAREGIVERS-SAVE THE DATE. Most of us know of someone who is involved in providing direct care or responsible for the care of a family member, a neighbor, or friend. That someone may be you. Caregivers often describe their service as simply “doing what needs to be done.” However, the hours spent on care can leave little time for relaxation, spiritual renewal or connecting with others. Volunteers in the Cumberland/Perry Deanery parishes are planning the 5th Annual Caregivers’ Day of Prayer and Care to honor these very special men and women Saturday, October 27 at Trinity High School, Camp Hill. Please share this announcement with caregivers you know. There is no cost for the day, but registration is required. Contact Madeline Beitzel by email: [email protected] or call her at 717-307-9266 for more information.

On October 13, 2018 a conference, in Philadelphia honoring Humanae Vitae and sponsored by the archdiocese, will be held. This one day conference will feature various speakers. The subjects of their talks include "Contraception and the False Promise of Women's Advancement," "The Prophecies of Humanae Vitae Manifested" and "Contraception and the Link to Breast Cancer." The conference will be held on October 13, 2018 from 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM at the Logan Philadelphia Hotel, One Logan Square, Philadelphia, PA 19103. For more information please visit www.phillycatholiclife.org.

The 6th annual Christmas Fest will take place on Saturday, November 17, 2018, from 8:00 AM until 3:30 PM. In addition to fun, food, children’s games, silent auction, and school musical performances, we are looking for craft vendors. If you or someone you know sells handmade items or owns a business, there are 10’ x 6’ vendor booths available starting at $40.00. For more information, including a vendor application, please contact Valerie Spangler at 717-790-9172 or [email protected].

In celebration of the 150th Anniversary of the Diocese of Harrisburg, a diocesan-wide pilgrimage to the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC, is planned for Saturday, November 3, 2018. The pilgrimage will be led by Bishop Gainer and is the first to the National Shrine since his installation as Bishop of Harrisburg. Please visit the Saint Elizabeth Ann

Seton website and complete the form to reserve your place on the bus: www.steas.net/steastest/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Bus_trip_sign-up.pdf For more information, visit www.hbgdiocese.org/150 for a daily schedule and a Pilgrimage FAQS sheet. Details will be added, as they become available, to the diocesan website. For specific questions about the pilgrimage, you may call Karen Harding at 717-657-4804 ext. 240, or email [email protected].

Employment Opportunity: Our Saint Joseph School Extended Day Program has an opening for a caregiver 2-3 afternoons per week from 2:15 - 5:30 PM. Responsibilities include playing with and helping children, assisting children with homework, helping to serve snack, cleaning up after snack, and other duties as required by Director. Applicants will need to complete or submit (done within the past 12 months) all necessary employee clearances and background checks along with a valid driver’s license. If you are interested in earning extra income while performing a very rewarding service, please contact Linda Schneider at [email protected].
