During this talk, I am not speaking for the University of Michigan, I am not speaking for
Blackboard, Inc., I am not speaking for the IMS Global Learning Consortium, I am not Speaking
for the Apereo Foundation, and I am not speaking for Coursera.
Frankly, no matter who pays me or pays my travel, the only one I speak for is myself and my
goal is to improve teaching and learning through technology regardless of what
technology those teachers and students choose to use.
We are at the very beginning! No one has *any* idea where this
is going!Anyone who makes a "ground truth" claim about MOOCs is
wrong!

Coursera API Roadmap*
• IMS Learning Tools Interoperability 1.1 to plug in external tools like autograders or content systems from externally hosted systems
• In-browser widget using OAuth 2.0 and in browser provisioned APIs
• Dynamic question types HTML + JavaScript + Scala + Key,/Value per-student store - all hosted in the Coursera Infrastructure
* I do not work for Coursera - this is just what I heard in a talk
edX API Roadmap*
• IMS Learning Tools Interoperability 1.1 to plug in external tools like autograders or content systems from externally hosted systems
• In-browser widget using XBlock and in browser provisioned APIs - already released open source
• Full edX will be released open source (Affero GPL) - June 1, 2013
* I do not work for edX
Next Generation LMS Systems
• Scalability and dynamic provisioning is the key
• Instead of one server(or servers) per campus we have one server per course
• This is an $100 Million dollar rewrite from scratch - and a life/death race
• Coursera is 30 engineers and edX is 20 Engineers
Some Questions....
Nature of Innovation
Interesting Questions...
• What is wrong with this picture?
• How will this change higher education?
• How will teaching change? Invert the classroom?
• How will student's lives really change? Remedial education?
