Violinist Dae Hee Ahn is a 21-year-old South Korean native who is currently studying at The Juilliard School. She is the winner of the 2007 Livingston Symphony Orchestra Young Artists Competition, the winner of the 2006 William Paterson High Mountain Symphony Competition, first runner-up in the 2002 Manhattan School of Music Concerto Competition, first prize winner in the 2000 New York Music Competition co-sponsored by the YWCA, and first runner-up in the Queens Music Competition in 1999. Ms. Ahn regularly performs with her older sister, Dae Hyung, a graduate of The Juilliard School with a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in piano. Since their youth, Dae

Hee and Dae Hyung have appeared in concert halls together, including a full recital at Yeosu’s Cultural Arts Center organized by the New York City Music Development Institute. Ms. Ahn has appeared as soloist with the Livingston Symphony, High Mountain Symphony, New Jersey Philharmonic, and the Academic Symphony Orchestra. She appeared in recitals at Weill Recital Hall, Steinway Hall, and CAMI Hall as well as other small venues in New York, New Jersey, and Korea. This past summer, she participated as one of 19 chamber musicians at Taos School of Music. There, she worked with members of the Borromeo String Quartet, Shanghai

about JEREMY DENK

American pianist Jeremy Denk has steadily built a reputation as an unusual and compelling artist, with a broad and thought-provoking repertoire. He has appeared as soloist with many major orchestras in the US and abroad, and regularly gives recitals around the United States. He is known for his witty and personal writing, which has appeared in the New Yorker, the front page of the New York Times Book Review, Newsweek, and NPR Music’s website. He looks forward to his tenure as artistic director of the 2014 Ojai Music Festival, for which he is also composing the libretto to a semi-satirical opera. In 2012, he made his Nonesuch debut with a pairing of Ligeti’s Études and Beethoven’s final Piano Sonata. His 2011 recording of Ives’s two piano sonatas was

featured on Fresh Air with Terry Gross and selected for many “best of the year” lists. He has cultivated relationships with many living composers, and has several commissioning projects currently in progress. He often tours with violinist Joshua Bell, and their album French Impressions was recently released on the Sony Classical label, winning the 2012 Echo-Klassik award. He also regularly collaborates with cellist Steven Isserlis. The pianist’s blog, “Think Denk,” has been praised and referenced by many in the music press and industry; the New Yorker calls him “a superb musician who writes with arresting sensitivity and wit.” Mr. Denk earned degrees from Oberlin, Indiana University, and Juilliard. He lives in New York City.

String Quartet, and Brentano String Quartet. A current student of Catherine Cho, Dae Hee has also studied with Sylvia Rosenberg, Chin Kim, Shirley Givens, Byung-Kook Kwak, and Vladimir Zyskind.

Dominic Cheli is currently a junior at the Manhattan School of Music studying with André-Michel Schub. He has performed on the NPR radio show From the Top as well as the Baby Got Bach show hosted by Orli Shaham. He has attended the Aspen Music Festival as well as the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival. Mr. Cheli has participated in master classes with Orli Shaham, Joseph Kalichstein, Yohaved Kaplinsky, and Sergei Babayan. Sheng-Ching Hsu was born in Taiwan and started her musical training at the age of 2. She made an early public debut at age 6 at the National Cheng-Kung University, and has since performed in Carnegie Hall and Remonstrantse Kerk of the Netherlands. Ms. Hsu has been awarded first prize in numerous competitions including the Flushing Young Artist Competition, Asia Pacific Cup Music Competition, Tainan Music Association Competition, Tainan Municipal Cultural Center Competition, and the National Tainan Senior High School Concerto Competition. In 2001, Ms. Hsu won the Tainan National Music Competition as the youngest participant on violin, and for composition a year later. She has received scholarships from Yamaha and Kawai. Ms. Hsu has appeared as a chamber musician at Carnegie Hall, the Consulate General of India in New York, Bohemian National Hall and more. Her piano quintet “Wine Chicken” won the Taiwan National Student Competition of Music. Ms. Hsu is a core member of

Ensemble 212, and has served as principal violinist in the Mannes Orchestra and Manhattan Symphony Orchestra. She has also served as a member of the Tainan City Orchestra, ChiMei Orchestra tour in China and Taiwan in the 2005-2006 season. Ms. Hsu has given solo recitals in Europe, America, and Asia, and recently performed with Ensemble 212 and Old York Road Symphony as a soloist. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Mannes College of Music, and is currently pursuing a master’s degree at The Juilliard School under the tutelage of Catherine Cho. Her previous teachers include Itzhak Perlman, Aaron Rosand, and Christina Khimm.

Cellist Hyewon Kim was awarded the Jack Kent Cooke Young Artist Award in 2009, and has appeared on national broadcast of From the Top. Ms. Kim has appeared as soloist with the Busan Philharmonic Orchestra, New Jersey Intergenerational Orchestra, Lehman College Orchestra, and Busan Sinfonietta, and has won the LISMA International Music Competition and the Five Towns Music and Art Foundation Young Musicians Competition. She has performed with the Juilliard Orchestra where she worked with conductors such as Alan Gilbert, John Adams, and Emmanuel Villaume, the New Juilliard Ensemble led by Dr. Sachs, and the New York String Seminar Orchestra under the baton of Jaime Laredo. Ms. Kim has participated in the Bowdoin International Music Festival as Performing Associate in 2009 and 2010, the Chamber Music Institute in Maine as Assistant Instructor in 2011, and the Boston University Tanglewood Institute in 2008 where she received a full scholarship. She has also participated in outreach concerts

including performances at Inglemoor nursing center, the Ministry Concert for North Korea Children’s Fund, and Benefit Concert for Victims of Hurricane Katrina. This summer, she attended Arts Ahimsa Music Festival as faculty. She is currently pursuing her undergraduate studies at The Juilliard School with Professor Andre Emelianoff.

Violinist Asi Matathias made his debut at the age of 14 with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Zubin Mehta. Since then, Mr. Matathias has performed as a soloist with numerous orchestras with many distinguished conductors including Zubin Mehta, Mendy Rodan, and Leon Botstein. Mr. Matathias is a frequent recitalist and has performed extensively throughout Europe, the United States, Asia, and Israel in halls such as Carnegie Hall’s Stern Auditorium, Izumy Hall in Japan, and the National Arts Center in Canada. As an enthusiastic chamber musician, he has collaborated with artists such as Yefim Bronfman, Frans Helmerson, and Nobuko Imai. Currently, he is studying with Pinchas Zukerman and Patinka Kopec at the Manhattan School of Music. Asi Matathias plays on the 1734 ‘Ex-Guillet’ violin by Guarneri Del Gesu.

Gustavo Miranda-Bernales was born in Santiago de Chile in 1991. He won the 2011 concerto competition at The Juilliard School and performed at the Peter Jay Sharp Theater with the Juilliard Orchestra under David Afkham. He is a three-time winner in the Claudio Arrau International Piano Competition in Quilpué, Chile. Mr. Miranda-Bernales has collaborated with the Chamber Orchestra of Pontificia Universidad Católica, the Juilliard Conductor’s Orchestra,

the New York Youth Symphony, the Teatro Municipal Chamber Orchestra, and Orquesta Sinfónica de Chile. Mr. Miranda-Bernales has performed in several festivals throughout Chile such as Semanas Musicales de Frutillar, Música en Reñaca, the Frédéric Chopin Society, the Goethe Institute, and the Rosita Renard Festival. He has participated in master classes by Robert McDonald, Richard Goode, Arie Vardi, Alfred Brendel, Murray Perahia, Claude Frank, Anton Kuerti, Marc Durand, Blanca Uribe, Dominique Weber, Alberto Rosado, Bernd Zack, Alvin Chow and Kevin Fitzgerald. Mr. Miranda-Bernales has been awarded several scholarships in Chile and the United States, including the Elena Waiss Scholarship, Amigos del Teatro Municipal Scholarship, and Rosita Renard Scholarship. At Juilliard, he is the recipient of the Adele Marcus Piano Scholarship, the Gary J. Amsterdam Piano scholarship, and the Kamiya Sisters Piano scholarship. Mr. Miranda-Bernales holds a bachelor of music from The Juilliard School where he is currently a first-year master of music student of Robert McDonald.

Violist Hannah Ross recently received her bachelor of music degree from The Juilliard School where she studied with Heidi Castleman and Hsin-Yun Huang. She has participated in many summer festivals, including the Perlman Music Program, the Heifetz International Music Institute, and the Banff Centre. An active member of the Juilliard community, Ms. Ross traveled to Tanzania in 2010, 2011, and 2012 as part of the Arusha Arts Initiative, a student-run group whose goal is to introduce creative and collaborative skills through the means of the performing arts at educational centers

in Arusha, Tanzania. In the 2010-11 and 2011-12 school year, Ms. Ross took on the leadership role of Colloquium Peer Mentor, to help entering freshmen adjust to their life at Juilliard. In addition, Ms. Ross is a member of the Gluck Community Service Fellowship, where she travels with three other Juilliard students to health care facilities around New York City to put on collaborative and interactive performances for patients who have physical and mental ailments, In October of 2012, Ms. Ross started working as a teacher of young children in the Combining Literacy Instruction with Musical Beginnings program through the Educational Outreach office at Juilliard. She is now in the master of music program at The Juilliard School under the tutelage of Samuel Rhodes.

Korean-American cellist Mark Yee is currently a senior at the Manhattan School of Music under the tutelage of Clive Greensmith. He has attended many music festivals in the US including the Sarasota Music Festival, Aspen Music Festival, and Norfolk Chamber Music Festival. An avid chamber musician, Mr. Yee has collaborated and performed with artists such as the Cleveland Quartet, Joel Smirnoff, Abbey Simon, and Susan Starr. In the spring of 2009, Mr. Yee was selected to study and perform with cellist Steven Isserlis and Ralph Kirshbaum at the International Musician Seminar Prussia Cove in Cornwall. He has performed in master classes for Lynn Harrell, Carter Brey, Garry Hoffman, Alisa Weilerstein, and Ronald Leonard.
