More PreparedExperiential Learning

While classroom learning is a vital part of our graduate programs, real-world experiences are equally important. The School of Education at Merrimack College offers opportunities to gain practical experience, conduct original research, and refine your skills in practical, hands-on settings.

• The Practicum: In our licensure programs, students take part in a supervised classroom teaching experience known as the practicum. Taking place over the course of a semester, the practicum allows graduate students to integrate and apply theory in a classroom setting. A key component of the practicum is the demonstration of the five “Professional Standards for Teachers,” as outlined by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE).

• The Capstone Project: For students in the General Studies, Higher Education, or Community Engagement programs, the Capstone Project allows for the synthesis and application of lessons through an in-depth exploration of a key educational issue or classroom-based experience. Underlying the capstone project is the core belief that learning and doing results in deeper knowledge and greater proficiency.

real-WorlD experience

“By combining academic work with practical experience, our programs help equip students for success. These two things together are very effective because practice cannot happen without solid research and theory, and research is useless without applied practice.”

More EngagedThe School of Education at Merrimack College offers unique opportunities for community, school, postsecondary, and organizational leaders to come together to address current-day challenges in the field of education. Our faculty members collaborate with a cadre of diverse partners to develop and maintain exemplary programs that serve as models for teaching, research, and service.

• Center for Engaged Democracy: Devoted to developing, coordinating, and supporting academic programs that are focused on community engagement, the Center for Engaged Democracy acts as a hub for civic and community engagement. Together, faculty, administrators, and community partners undertake a variety of initiatives: compiling research to support new programs, sponsoring conferences, building a vibrant academic community, and advocating for community engagement programs in higher education.

• Center for Youth and Families: Launched in 2011, The Center for Youth and Families is a key regional resource for parents, community organizations, and school systems in the Merrimack Valley. Addressing issues of child growth, emotional development, and civic well-being, the Center provides services and support for local PreK-12 students as well as information and advocacy training for parents and caregivers.

• Leadership Think Tanks: Leadership Think Tanks are professional learning communities focused on educational innovation and problem solving. Think Tanks bring together an accomplished group of leaders from regional school districts to share best practices, examine critical issues, and explore diverse perspectives. Through these dynamic working sessions, educators learn from each other, develop a strong network of peers, and acquire valuable strategies for addressing challenges within their own districts and schools.

More ImpactNational partners in education

Merrimack College is a partner in the 100Kin10 initiative, a multi-sector mobilization that responds to the national imperative to prepare, deploy, and support 100,000 excellent science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) teachers over the next ten years.

The need is great. While virtually all elementary teachers teach math and science, only five percent nationally have a degree or background in a STEM field. Merrimack is meeting the challenge to improve the national STEM pipeline through our innovative STEM education major and our “plus-one” option to earn a master of education degree. A sustainable and replicable model, the STEM major is an interdisciplinary effort with Merrimack’s School of Science and Engineering that will provide elementary educators with broad-based content knowledge and skill sets necessary to inspire and educate a new generation of scientists and engineers.
