The Master of Health Management (MHM) is an innovative Program that addresses the current and future needs of health professionals. Through a unique partnership between the DeGroote School of Business (DSB) and the School of Rehabilitation Science (SRS) at McMaster University, the MHM Program has been graduating leaders in the field of health management since September 2010.

This distance education degree is delivered in an on-line format with two short, intensive, onsite residency periods. The Program has just launched its new Full-time (12 months) option. The student body is diverse in both professional backgrounds and healthcare experience, which provides an interprofessional learning environment. Experts from academia, industry and government lead courses where students gain the skills needed to solve complex healthcare problems. The residency periods are recognized by the Program and students as powerful opportunities to hone key skills. These residencies enable students to learn from local health executives; provide students the chance to build a strong network by connecting with peers; and to develop a range of skills (oral communication, leadership, research) and literacies (information, media, emotional) that are fundamental to being strong leaders and managers within the healthcare sector.

Our faculty shared our online learning approach at The Global Summit for Online Learning 2017, an international conference in Toronto. Our MHM Program was also the successful recipient of an internal institutional grant here at McMaster, which will lead to the development of new experiential learning opportunities for students and correspondingly strengthen our relationships with our growing alumni network.

From its inception through to delivery, our MHM students acquire knowledge and hands-on skills that translate to the leading-edge healthcare management approaches needed in today’s health system.

Our graduates are leaders in their workplaces and communities. They have received numerous awards, presented at national and international conferences and published their work.

This report allows us to reflect on the impact of our Program over the past year and provides an opportunity to celebrate our accomplishments as well as plan ahead for the future.

In Fall 2017, our Program prepared for our first Institutional Quality Assurance Process (IQAP). This process is undertaken every eight years, as prescribed by Ontario Universities Council on Quality Assurance. This Council is a provincial body responsible for assuring the quality of all programs leading to degrees, including graduate programs. Our IQAP submission and subsequent site visit by a review committee provided us with an opportunity to reflect and evaluate the many facets of our graduate Program.

Key indicators that were highlighted in the report included student retention and time to completion. These indicators suggested the MHM Program provides a rigorous and well-paced program that selects the right candidates. We outlined how revenues from the MHM Program are reinvested to support faculty development (research and presentations) and students (awards). The report also provided an overview of recent innovations, including the integration of a full-time one-year stream. As well, we have incorporated further experiential learning opportunities in response to student feedback.

On behalf of the MHM Program, we would like to thank our students, alumni, faculty and staff who assisted with IQAP, including meeting with the review team. All stakeholders (staff, full-time and part-time faculty, upper management, students and alumni) viewed our MHM Program positively. The report from the IQAP review committee confirmed our ability to offer an academically robust and well-governed program. Their feedback also identified areas for enhancement including a more transparent admission process; equity, diversity and inclusive curriculum; and academic supports and mentorship opportunities for students. These areas will be addressed in future plans going forward.

The MHM Program is proud to support research in the field of online learning. Our faculty presented findings from their research project entitled “Exploring students’ and instructors’ perceptions of teaching presence in an online graduate program” at the Global Summit for Online Learning 2017. Further analysis of data from this project is underway and the MHM Executive and teaching faculty are considering ways to further enhance the learning experience of our students in the Program.

The MHM Program had another productive year with successes and celebrations

In 2017, the MHM Program launched a course that enabled students to integrate theory into practice by participating in work-integrated learning beyond their current area of employment. We are continuing to refine this course with the aim of enhancing learning opportunities. This past year, we embarked on a strategic initiative entitled “Increasing Alumni Engagement Through Experiential Learning Opportunities (ELO) in the Master of Health Management Program.” This initiative received funding through the Office of Community Engagement at McMaster University where the goal is to expand the number of ELOs available by extending opportunities to our MHM alumni. This project will strengthen and build our alumni network and beyond by establishing relationships with leaders in healthcare organizations across Canada and beyond. We expect interest among our students will increase if there are more learning opportunities like these available.

We are excited about the launch of the Full-time stream in the MHM Program that started in Fall 2018. The Program accepted 17 students into this stream. Taking multiple courses per term, this group of students will complete the Program in 12 months compared to Part-time students who complete one course per term over 32 months. Full-time students receive an Entrance Scholarship and are eligible for financial assistance.

The blended approach of the MHM Program provides students with the opportunity to advance their online skills as well as to come to campus and meet one another face-to-face at three specific and strategic time points during their studies. The first opportunity is referred to as the ‘Fall Residency’; second is called the ‘Spring Residency’; and finally, the ‘Convocation Reception’. In October 2017, we welcomed our newest cohort to campus for the first time to meet their classmates, alumni, faculty and staff. At the Ron Joyce Centre in Burlington, Ontario, 43 students participated in academic writing and library search workshops. This enthusiastic group honed their oral presentation skills as well as discussed and debated ‘healthcare myths.’ Concurrent to the Fall Residency, the MHM teaching team also meet to learn about innovations in online teaching, which aims to ensure the Program continues to provide the most effective online learning environment for students.

The Spring Residency coincides with the delivery of the core course, Leadership in Health Organizations. During this residency, a panel of senior level administrators share practical experience along with theories about how to best lead teams, lead self, and lead change. A recent MHM student commented, ‘The guest speakers were fantastic! They captivated the audience and provided some great information which tied in nicely with our assignment.’ The June 2018 panel consisted of executive leaders, Nikki Morris, Debra Carson, and Cathy Hecimovich, who provided strategies and reflections on leading in the current health system environment. These presentations were valuable to the 46 students who heard first-hand accounts of the challenges and successes of leading in health organizations. On behalf of the MHM Program, we thank these presenters for their time and dedication.

Another highlight in our Program is the convocation reception. In June 2018, our MHM faculty and staff celebrated with our seventh cohort of graduates during a special reception held at the Art Gallery of Hamilton. A sense of pride and accomplishment was felt as we announced the names of the 41 students who received their Master in Health Management degree. Recipients of our program-related awards were also announced: Award of Excellence (Maggie Traetto), Scholarly Paper Prize (Holly Smith), Community Contribution Award (Cameron Renwick), and Professional Achievement (Gillian Nearing).

As a Program, we feel extremely fortunate to be part of the academic journey of our students. We always look forward to hearing from our Alumni and celebrating their continuing success!

Kristin Kennedy McLennan (projected Graduate Class of 2019) is evidence that the Program positions students for success, enhances their career growth, and is highly regarded. She believes “the MHM Program teaches leaders crucial translational

knowledge that can impact and elevate a student’s personal and professional life, as well as the quality of healthcare in Canada.”

After graduating as a Registered Nurse from St. Clair College in Ontario, Kristin began her career in Texas and then Michigan. Now she is back in western Ontario having a positive impact as a senior leader at a rural hospital.

When she embarked on her MHM journey in 2016, Kristin was Operations Manager of Neurosurgery & Stroke at a large hospital in Windsor, Ontario. Here, her greatest accomplishment was the establishment of a 16-bed acute stroke unit. The District Stroke Centre for Windsor-Essex County provides leadership, development, implementation and integration of stroke care for residents throughout the Erie-St. Clair Local Health Integration Network. In her second year of the Program, she was promoted

to the position of Director of Critical Care & Cardiology. And most recently, Kristin was the successful candidate for Vice President of Patient Services & Chief Nurse Executive at Erie Shores Healthcare.

“Without the foundational learnings of the MHM Program I know that I would not have had such a swift trajectory in this part of my career. As I have overseen the development of quality initiatives and a standard model of care I have leveraged the theory of each class as a source of reference and opportunity”, she says. Kristin valued her classmate’s diversity by reaching out to fellow students for resources and guidance in their area of expertise, as well as recruiting a fellow student into a leadership position within her organization.

As Kristin wraps up her studies, she is completing a scholarly paper with the oversight of a faculty advisor. “It allowed me, as a prospective leader, the ability to reflect on a focused area of interest and integrate knowledge and experience, with the added possibility of publication.” She knows that publishing a paper can enhance her profile, lead to collaborations in her field of expertise and further her career path.
