COURSE AIMS This non-research based graduate program provides a Master of Science in BioMedical Engineering & Design. Graduate Students are taught theoretical & practical aspects of engineering, exposed to advanced biomedical & design topics and partake in tutored research projects or engage in the design of medical prototypes. This accelerated program is industry based and has a very selective candidate screening process and therefore can be completed in as little as 18 months with a six month paid industrial placement included. The objective of this degree program and internship is to immerse students into the forefront of the innovative world of biomedical engineering to confront them with demanding research problems and tangible industrial situations to better prepare them for promising careers in this up and coming field. Carefully planned into curriculum is a focus on combining and then putting into commercial practice advances in medicine, biology and related technologies. All BME&D students will interface with clinical, business and research collaborators and gain practical experience that will aid develop their communication, and marketing skills, thus assuring our alumnis’ professional success. INDUSTRIAL PARTNERS The Centre for Biomedical and Healthcare Engineering of the École des mines de Saint- Étienne works with major companies of the Healthcare sector both in France and abroad. Our Industrial Partnerships provide feedback to direct research and important information on the required skills that should be taught for future employees. In this case they furnish a constantly updated guideline as to where the fast paced medical or bio-manufacturing sector is going. Centre for Biomedical and Healthcare Engineering is a member of the following Industrial Clusters: Pôle des technologies médicales VIAMECA Lyon Bio-Pôle Cancéropôle CLARA ENVIRONMENT The Healthcare industry is expanding explosively worldwide and requires increasingly multicultural and interdisciplinary engineers and managers. Multicultural also means the ability to get familiar with working with international team projects to provide sophisticated and innovative solutions to the health and biomedical problems of today. As a multidisciplinary domain, biomedical engineering is connected to technology for designing, improving, and using new methods and tools. This major industrial sector faces innovation, economic, human and social challenges. It requires new and specific customized academic programs and we are exploring new embryonic research themes at the interface of engineering, sciences and healthcare. PROGRAMME • One month French acculturation for non- holder of DELF B2 French as foreign language Culture and engineering Semester 1 (Fall) Bioengineering Healthcare environment and constraints Innovation & project management in health sector Year-long project (1/2) Semester 2 (Spring) International management & Finance Personalized medicine, elective courses: – Image processing – Biomechanics and biomaterials – Biomedical devices - bioelectronics – Healthcare system management 4 weeks hospital internship. The purpose is to acclimatize students early on to understand first-hand the conditions in hospital settings Year-long project (2/2) Semester 3 6 months internship in a company, hospital, clinic or in a research lab The program includes : Significant proportion of hands-on projects each semester Specialization in one of the biomedical engineering areas related to healthcare proposed in semester 2 The BioMedical Engineering & Design program trains future executives or engineers on how to develop and produce innovative products, devices or processes for the biomedical industry. Graduates will work in multinational groups, start-ups, public or private hospital sector. Graduates will work both upstream and downstream of the biomedical sector at the interfaces between the manufacturers and the end users. LOCATIONS Saint-Étienne campus is at the heart of the Rhône-Alpes Region (2nd largest French region in terms of population), 50 km from Lyon’s city center. Gardanne campus, located in the Western Provence, is 10 km far from Aix-en-Provence and 30 km from Marseilles. The Biomedical and Healthcare Engineering Center at the École des mines of Saint-Étienne is among the newest and most innovative in France and is home to an experienced and pioneering faculty. This center is also associated with numerous research clusters, companies and laboratories engaged in an array of interdisciplinary biomedical & healthcare research and biomed design. Applying engineering, design and optimization concepts to medicine is a relatively new domain and the École des mines has risen up to accept the challenge. In addition, Healthcare is a one of the main economic sectors in Rhône-Alpes area with over 66 000 people and 15 000 students. LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS Courses are given in English. However French is taught as a foreign language. Students must provide evidence of proficiency in the English language. This could include: English as a mother tongue Sufficient work/studies in an English- speaking country Acquisition of an official English language qualification such as : – TOEFL : 550/677 (Paper-Based) or 213/300 (computer-based) or 79/120 (internet-based) – IELTS : 5.5/9 – TOEIC : 750/990 – Cambridge : CAE (Certificate of Advanced English) French Good Knowledge of French is not mandatory beforehand, but candidates are encouraged to begin learning French in their home countries in advance.
