The choice for the University of Twente was easily made. It was recommended to me by a friend who studied in the Netherlands. Later I also found out that the University of Twente ranks very high worldwide especially for the Engineering studies. Moreover the master programme perfectly matched my bachelor background.

It was very comfortable to live on campus. It is a very green area with different sport and culture facilities. There are different possibilities to engage in active social life. For example, I was a member of The Association of Chinese Students at the University of Twente, where I helped to organize several events such as badminton matches, football matches, Chinese New Year Party, etc. The location of campus is ideal if you like to travel: it is only a few minutes away from Germany!

The master program I studied is well organized. Some international students can take bridging courses to cover the differences between the curriculums of the University of Twente and their home universities. Most lectures are given within small classes, which promotes the interaction

between teachers and students a lot. The study mode (team-work and individual assignments) to which I became used to during my student life, taught me how to adapt to different working environments which often require strong team-building skills. The final project proved to be the most useful for my career path as it showed me what kind of jobs I like and qualify for. During the final year I could already try myself in the business world as I worked part-time as a junior System Administrator in a consulting firm in Enschede.

After working as a Java software engineer at Spin B.V. for two years, I was employed as an analyst programmer at a very prestigious consultancy in the Netherlands – Accenture Technology Solutions. Currently I am working in the UK at the Kingston University in London as a system analyst within the infrastructure team.

EMBEDDED SYSTEMS (3TU pROGRAMME)Embedded systems are hardware/software systems built into devices that are not necessarily “recognised” as computerised devices, but these systems do control the functionality and perceived quality of these devices. Some specific examples of embedded systems include: controllers for the ABS of a car or the operation of its engine, the automatic pilot of an aircraft, the chip set and software within a set-top box for a digital TV, a pacemaker, chips within telecom switching equipment, ambient devices, and control systems embedded in robots and in process plants (including its sensors, actuators, control algorithms, filters, etc.).

The 3TU master’s programme in Embedded Systems addresses the need for qualified engineers in this area. The programme covers all of the relevant topics, such as performance modelling, control theory, signal processing, computer architectures, programming, computer networks, real-time systems, and system validation. It complements this knowledge with a system design approach to integrate the different aspects into one product.

Almost everything that has not been created by nature is in some way a product of mechanical engineering, for example flood barriers or large-scale plants such as power stations, oil refineries and steel factories. Mechanical engineers also create transport such as cars, trains, aeroplanes, rockets and electric scooters, as well as all kinds of applications. In medicine and biomedicine, for example, such applications include robot-controlled surgical tools, “smart” prostheses such as heart valves, and miniature cameras for internal explorations. SUSTAINABlE ENERGY TECHNOlOGY (3TU pROGRAMME)People are becoming aware of the diminishing availability of fossil fuels and the threat of climate change. The sustainable generation of energy will play a key role in coping with these issues. Technologies applying promising sustainable energy sources (e.g. biomass, water, wind and sun) and new energy carriers (e.g. hydrogen) need to be investigated, developed, optimised and integrated into society. At the same time, the energy market is changing as a result of internationalisation and liberalisation. To realise this “revolution”, we need a new generation of specialized engineers and researchers.

The SET master’s programme is a 3TU program in which the tree Dutch technical universities cooperate. In the first year, it contains core courses in Energy from Biomass, Solar Energy, Hydrogen Technology and Wind Energy’ and provides knowledge in sustainable energy technology areas. Attention is also given to electrical energy storage in batteries and storage in the form of hydrogen. In the second year, the programme concentrates on research and/or design. Elective courses make it possible to acquire further in-depth knowledge necessary to carry out the graduation research or design assignment. Students can choose their MSc project from one of the six theme areas: Solar Energy, Wind Energy, Biomass, Hydrogen and Energy Storage, Intelligent Electricity Networks and Energy and Society.

I was looking at world rankings in Electrical Engineering, and I found out that University of Twente (UT) was among the top 100 universities in the world in the field of Engineering. After that I deepened my research on UT, talked to my professors, and decided that it is one of the best universities to apply for. First of all, UT offers wonderful research opportunities such as very advanced laboratories, well known and highly knowledgeable academic staff, and numerous projects waiting to be realized. There are always presentations and project meetings going on, which indicates how much importance UT professors give to research. Beside this serious study environment, professors and course instructors approach students very positively and friendly. They are trying to get involved in almost all student activities, and support their efforts and ideas. This connection motivates students in their studies and social life. Guest lecturers are sometimes invited which lets students gain a better perspective in different application areas. During the lab sessions, team work is very important, because the university is not only educating students for an academic career, but also for the industry. A

team of 15 students is building a radio as a final lab assignment; this is not a thing that can be seen in every university. All financial needs, components, test equipments etc. can be provided by UT easily, and computers are waiting to be used almost everywhere. So to say, a student has to be willing to learn, and develop; UT will take care of the rest.Secondly, administrative staff thinks of every single necessary and important procedure. It is so natural for a student to get confused in formal steps. Numerous papers for enrollment, housing, insurance, bank account, and other essential issues such as appointment with doctor, phone card, e-mail account, procedure for course enrolments and many other new things are taken care of UT administrative staff. During the introduction week, students are handed a program full of appointments which are pre-arranged. Administrative staff is always willing to help and guide them whenever the students ask for it. Thus, life becomes much easier at UT.Thirdly, UT has a very green campus in a nice city, Enschede. Faculties, laboratories, library, different kinds of houses, sport fields including even a beach volleyball field, supermarket, even a bar are located on this huge campus which provides a student everything he/she might need. Also, the UT campus is 15-20 min bike ride distance away from the city, so the mobility is easy. Spending a lunch break in the city centre and coming back in time is possible. Although the city centre has many attractive sides such as a bazaar with a very good quality food, and clubs for nightlife, it is also possible to travel to other cities. Advanced rail transportation enables students to organize their trips and travel extremely easily. One of the most dynamic capitals around the world, Amsterdam is around 2 hours away from Enschede by train. Furthermore, Enschede is home to a successful football team, last champion of The Netherlands, FC Twente. Its stadium, Grolsch Veste is 5-10 min. walking distance away from the campus which enables UT students to enjoy many victories easily.

fACULTy Of GEO-iNfOrMATiON sCiENCE AND EArTh OBsErvATiONGEO-INFORMATION SCIENCE AND EARTH OBSERVATION One of humankind’s greatest challenges is to achieve an appropriate balance between developing natural resources and maintaining an optimal environment. To meet this challenge, we need detailed and reliable geo-information and geo-information management tools.

Geo-information science and earth observation consists of a combination of tools and methods for the collection, storage and processing of geo-spatial data. Geo-information science deals also with the dissemination and use of geo-spatial data and managing of services based on these data. In the MSc programme Geo-information Science and Earth Observation considerable attention is paid to the development and application of geographical information systems (GIS) and remote sensing tools for solving problems. Such problems can range from planning urban infrastructure and implementing land administration systems, to designing a wildlife management system and detecting environmental pollution. GIS and remote sensing play a role in disaster management, for example in determining the risks of landslides or mapping the extent of forest fires and can support governments and relief agencies in response to disasters.Important elements of the MSc programme include the development of academic skills such as a critical understanding of appropriate methods and tools. Participants are exposed to new methods and techniques and will gain competence both in developing tools for the acquisition, processing, transformation, analysis, modelling, storage and presentation of spatial data and in using geo-information to identifying and respond to development problems.

The MSc programme is based on research. The development of research skills is given attention throughout the course. Participants are required to design, undertake and report on research in which geo-information science and earth observation are used to develop techniques and/or to deal with a specific application problem connected with the chosen specialization of the programme. The focus of the research will be determined through discussion between the participant and his/her supervisor in dialogue, and will fall within the scope of the research themes of the Faculty. The website of the faculty ITC (www.itc.nl) gives more detailed information on the programmes at the Faculty. The general information in this brochure does not always directly apply to programmes at Faculty ITC.

GEO-INFORMATION SCIENCE AND EARTH OBSERVATION There is an increasing need for organizations to efficiently acquire and exploit geo-information. The emphasis is therefore on the integration and reuse of geo-information and the associated production process. Such efforts are the core activity of building spatial data infrastructures (SDIs). To handle the ever-increasing volumes of data storage and data flow between computer systems, the characteristics and functionality of such infrastructures require special attention from different technical perspectives: data acquisition, processing and dissemination.

Understanding the design principles and being able to apply appropriate technology for implementation purposes is of key importance to staff in these organizations. They must effectively carry out data acquisition (from remotely sensed images and other sensors), database management, geo-information processing and visualization techniques to build integral geo-information applications and SDIs in any geo-information application domain.

The Master degree course addresses the needs of geoinformatics engineers who wish to improve their skills in using integrated geo-information production technology. An integral part of the course is the operational management of geo-information production systems, including design, planning, maintenance (execution, quality control) and exploitation. The course is designed for young and mid-career engineering staff at governmental organizations or companies such as mapping agencies that deal with geo-information.

The topics covered in this course will provide the participant with an in-depth knowledge of geo-information technology. It will also allow the participant to effectively create and handle geo-information and to build and use geo-information applications and SDIs. Moreover, the course has been set up to give a clear overview of information integration issues and common solutions to real-life geo-information problems.

pUBlIC ADMINISTRATION Contemporary public administration takes many forms. A wide range of partly autonomous organizations and institutions deliver public services and respond to public issues. Given their mutual dependencies, they must work together to tackle complex situations. Ensuring high-quality public administration is therefore a constant challenge.

The Twente approach is particularly based on multi-actor and multi-level analysis of public problems and it is aimed at solutions that meet both functional (effectiveness and efficiency) and procedural criteria (rule of law, legitimacy, legality, and democracy).

If you are fascinated by the complex world of public administration and policy, and would like to work towards a more sustainable system of public administration, the MSc Public Administration programme may be just right for you.

BIOMEDICAl ENGINEERING Biomedical Engineering is a multidisciplinary study that combines physical sciences, technology and biology. A biomedical engineer designs and develops new technological solutions for medical problems. Healthcare is developing rapidly. People remain healthy longer and illnesses can be cured more frequently. Technology plays a key role in prevention, diagnosis, therapy, rehabilitation and care. This encompasses a wide range of activities, including tissue engineering to increase the “friendliness” of implants in the body, 3D imaging of organs and electrical stimuli applied to the nervous system to restore impaired body functions. The field of biomedical engineering needs engineers who can cooperate with colleagues from different disciplines and can combine their knowledge and expertise in the fields of science, technology and medicine to create new applications that will improve health care.

CHEMICAl ENGINEERING Chemical engineers are creative problem solvers who use physical science (e.g. chemistry and physics), and life sciences (e.g. biology, microbiology and biochemistry) with mathematics, to the process of converting raw materials or chemicals into more useful or valuable forms. In addition to producing useful materials, modern chemical engineering is also concerned with pioneering valuable new materials and techniques - such as nanotechnology, fuel cells and biomedical engineering. Chemical engineering largely involves the design, improvement and maintenance of processes involving chemical or biological transformations for large-scale manufacture. However, a chemical engineer also needs management skills, economic knowledge and for example, expertise of environmental aspects. The UT’s Chemical Engineering Master’s degree course concentrates on these very themes.Studying Chemical Engineering at the University of Twente brings you at the forefront of research and development of innovative chemical processes, novel materials and new products.

NANOTECHNOlOGY Nanotechnology focuses on the design and creation of functional materials, structures, devices and systems by directly controlling matter at the nano level, as well as the exploitation of novel phenomena and properties. In general, “nano level” is defined as being smaller than 100 nanometres, depending on the physical and chemical characteristics of the particular system that undergoes quantitative and qualitative changes when the length scale boundary is crossed. Nanotechnology research and development includes the controlled manipulation of nano-scale structures and their integration into larger material components, systems and architectures. Within these larger-scale assemblies, the control and construction of their structure and components continue to be at the nano-level. In nanotechnology, it is essential to have direct control of matter, whether between two nano-level objects or between a micro/macro-level object and a nano level object.

After having completed a bachelor programme in Computer Science in Indonesia, I did not want to spend all the precious time only behind the computer. I wanted to meet new people and to travel. And this is how I got acquainted with the University of Twente for the first time.In 2006 I found a Master programme that suited me very much, Business Information Technology. This programme offered the combination of business and IT, which I was looking for. Starting in 2008, I completed this 2 year programme with joy and excitement. Being in Europe for the first time and meeting lots of International students and teachers, made the time fly so fast. The University of Twente also offered many meaningful activities for both my professional experience and personal development. Such a broad human resource development made me more confident in many ways. In the business world both hard and soft skills are important, and this is what the University of Twente helped me to develop.

The teachers at the University of Twente have good academic and professional networks, which helped me to get acquainted with the high-end industries in Europe. By the time I needed to write my Master thesis, I managed to do a project with one of the biggest Telecommunication companies in the world located in Germany. This practical experience definitely brings more value to my academic records. Currently, with the degree I got from the University of Twente, I managed to get my first job in Europe, as an IT Auditor in one of the biggest multinational companies in Germany – Deutsche Post DHL. I believe the name of this university helped me to get this job, as many companies in Europe already have acknowledged the good quality of the graduates from the University of Twente.
