Everybody shares the responsibility of keeping time.

• All players create time and are responsible for maintaining the tempo throughout a song.

• When relying on others to be the “timekeepers” you are prone to affecting the time.

• Keeping time is something everyone needs to “own” with confidence.

You must become a good follower of tempo.

• Rhythmic accuracy is vital for successful performance.

• Following tempo keeps you in sync with other players.

Percussionist Mac Santiago has a theory for why musicians struggle with rhythm.

• Rhythm often plays “second fiddle” to harmony and melody in western cultures compared to e.g. African.

• Western musicians aren’t taught to dance or incorporate body movement in time to music.

• Mac created a method to developing better rhythm called “inchronicity”. “Inchronous” refers to your internal clock’s ability to keep time without external help.

The Inchronicity method helps all musicians to create or maintain

steady tempo.• Musicians must “wean” themselves off of the so

called “tempo crutch”: a metronome, click track or even other players.

• Inchronicity works the same way in which intonation clarifies melody and harmony.

• Your inchronous sense can be refined and “tuned-up” as your technique changes and grows.

There are other ways in which you can improve your sense of rhythm.

• Record yourself and listen to the playback of your recording.

• When someone tells you you are rushing or dragging, look at it as a teachable moment.

• Try to detect when you are not in-sync with other players.

An inchronous sense becomes more important as music gets

more complex.

• Don’t take the importance of good time-keeping for granted!

• Remember: “A poorly-played note well placed is better than a well-played note placed poorly.”
