The master’s programme in International Project Management is run as a cooperation initiative between Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden and Northumbria University in Newcastle upon Tyne in the UK.The programme provides students with a systematic understanding of project management and a critical awareness of current problems and/or new insights. The international view is strengthened by studies at two different universities in two different countries.Students are required to study in both countries, and they receive a double degree – one master’s degree from each university.

aim of the programmeStudents with a bachelor’s degree in an en-gineering field often become project man-agers after a short time as an engineer. The programme was designed to combine natu-rally with an engineering degree for individu-als interested in working in project manage-ment in an international environment. Who should applyThe programme is generic and applicants can have a background from any area of engineering, natural science or architec-ture. The mixture of students with different experiences gives the programme an inter-esting profile where level of competence is increased.

Why applyAn increasing number of companies work in an international environment. Project managers need to be prepared for the challenges involved in working with people from different cultures. Studying in two dif-ferent countries and working together with students from other parts of the world pro-vides an opportunity to practise the theo-ries during the study period. Good effective project management requires appropriately balanced combi-nations of explicit and tacit knowledge, professional practical experience and professional behaviour. This perspective stimulates adoption of a philosophy for the programme that is designed to engender

an ethos of partnership between students, academia and industry.

educational methodsThe programme offers a mixture of conven-tional lectures and seminars, supported by online resources and a variety of external sources of information. IPM benefits greatly from the use of case studies, live projects and collaboration with practitioners. Student presentations, group work and case studies are important parts of the programme. The theories are practised by studies in two different countries with stu-dents from other parts of the world.

research connectionsThe programme is linked to the research carried out at the two cooperating univer-sities. Both universities perform qualified research in management fields, and the lecturers provide a close connection to the research being performed. The programme is also linked to industry throughout the two years. Students’ as-signments are carried out in connection with industry, and they participate in con-ferences and complete projects where in-dustry is involved.

career opportunitiesTogether with a bachelor’s degree which has given the theoretical background in the area of specialisation, this programme

gives the necessary competence to be a project leader. Engineers, architects and scientists often use to be managers after a few years. International Project Manage-ment is a help to be a successful leader in an international environment.

programme overvieWThe modules in the first term deal with pro-ject management from four different per-spectives:• the human perspective • the organisational perspective• the business perspective • the management perspective.

The second term focuses on important areas of project management. Although in-ternational aspects are a common feature, a special module focuses specifically on in-ternational projects. Leadership and com-munication are other important aspects, as are knowledge management and learning. The third term at Northumbria University of-fers a broader perspective on project man-

agement. Other important issues are stud-ied during this term, such as how risk and value can be managed. Different research methods are studied in preparation of the master’s thesis that is written the final term. The master’s thesis involves individual re-search on a topic related to project man-agement. This can be carried out at either of the two partner universities.

chalmers university of technology

Chalmers conducts research and edu ca tion in engineering and natural scien ces, architec ture, technology-relat ed mathe mati cal scienc es and nautical sciences – in close collaboration with indus-try and society. Chalmers is one of Sweden’s largest universities of technology with about 12 000 students and 2 200 em ployees. Approximately 40 percent of Sweden’s graduate engineers and architects are educated here. Chalmers has formed partner-ships with major industries mostly in the Gothenburg region such as Ericsson, Volvo and SKF. The Master’s Programmes at Chalmers are strongly linked to advan c ed research in areas of particular strength. Upon comple-tion of studies, candidates will be granted a Master’s degree. The programmes are taught in English and open to applicants from the whole world. Chalmers has eight areas of advance where the aim is to bring together research, education and innovation across departmen-tal boundaries and to co-operate with bodies and organisations out side Chalmers: Materials Science, Produ c tion, Information & Communica tion Technology, Transport, Built Environment, Nano-science & Nano technology, Life Science and Energy. The eight key areas also have a firm foundation in the basic sciences. The pursuit of new knowledge and improved technology has characterized Chalmers ever since its foundation in 1829.www.chalmers.se/en

the small metropolis – gothenBurgMore than 60 000 are currently studying in Gothenburg. In many ways, their decision to choose Gothenburg when the time came to take the next step into the future isn’t surprising. Gothenburg is an attractive major city with a maritime atmosphere and within easy reach of outdoor activities in the rest of West Sweden. Gothenburg is an uncommonly inviting city for students, with a great deal to offer: You’ll find an exciting cultural and entertainment scene worthy of any major city, as well as a friendly atmosphere that will help you to quickly feel at home.

Founded in 1621, Gothenburg is a young city by European stand-ards. Since formative years it has been an important port of in-ternational trade and today it is the largest in Scandinavia. With a population of about half a million, it is both friendly and cosmo-politan. www.goteborg.com

sWeden – a culture of innovationOne of the world’s most modern countries, Sweden is the birth-place of many successful international corporations. Innovative research at Swedish universities and companies has resulted in a number of successful inventions. Some examples are: the computer mouse, Bluetooth for internet mobility, the pacemaker, the ball bearing, the Tetra Pak beverage packaging system, the dialysis machine and internet applications such as the online music streaming service Spotify and the free internet calling ser-vice Skype. These fairly recent inventions build on a long history of excellence in academia and research. Sweden is the home of the prestigious Nobel Prize, awarded in Stockholm every year. Sweden has a number of large multinational corporations, such as telecom supplier Ericsson, automotive companies Volvo and Scania, household appliances corporation Electrolux, bear-ing manufacturer SKF, and high-tech engineering groups Sand-vik and Atlas Copco. The deep-rooted creative environment has made Sweden a strong nation in the areas of design, fashion and music, with well-known international brands such as furni-ture giant IKEA and clothes retailer H&M. Sweden is also one of the largest music-exporting countries in the world.www.studyinsweden.se

“Chalmers – for a sustainable future is a vision which exudes the long-term approach, the acceptance of responsibility and the trust I feel is worthy of Chalm-ers. At the same time, it is obvious that this vision has to be shared by many and that Chalmers has to co-operate across disciplines in order to promote the whole of society’s commitment to our future.”
