1. Introduction I possible, show the children a copy o Seurats Sunday afernoon on theIsland o La Grande Jatte. Look careully at the composition and discuss the
contrasts with lie in the 21st century. How do the clothing and activitiesdiffer rom those o today? Are any similar?
2. Te main activity Divide the children into our groups.Group 1: Children use Masterclass on the GridClub website to recreate theirown Seurat image, save it and print it out.Group 2: Look at the sketches that the children made earlier. Each childtakes a turn to place the group in position (as in the sketch), arrangingprops, expressions and activities. Explain to the children that Seurats figuresare rozen in their various attitudes. Each member o the group takes aphotograph o their montage. Check the pictures and save them.
Group 3: Sketch out a background scene on large sheets o backing paper. Usea variety o sponges and stipple colours onto paper. I there is room, clear aspace on the floor and work there. Keep checking on the colours Seurat usedin his painting o Sunday afernoon on the Island o La Grande Jatte. Makesure the children use the sponges lightly and dont overwork the stippling asthe paper may tear.Group 4: Make quick sketches o the montage set up by Group 2. Sketch
very lightly with charcoal or pencil. I possible use a photocopier to enlargethe images and then gently fill in the contours with a series o dots, using eltpens. Explain to the children that adding more dots will make the coloursdenser, whereas lighter application will result in more subtle colouring andshading.NB I children are waiting to use the scanner or sofware, encourage them tomake drawings o an apple, pear or other ruit. Colour with dots using eltpen.Display When the background is dry, attach to a display board. Cut out anyfigures that have been completed and add to the display.
3. Plenary andollow-up
