Using this answer and quiz booklet
This booklet is for KS3 students or their parents or carers to check their answers
from the Mastery Writing Self-study Workbook 3.
There is no need to print this booklet – view it on a device to save paper.
Some activities have right or wrong answers.
• We’ve provided the answers to these questions in this
booklet. They are green and underlined.
• You can tick or cross these questions.
• When you are ticking your sentences, they must look exactly
like the ones given, including spelling, punctuation and
capital letters, to get the mark.
When you see this symbol, it is an extended writing activity.
Consider:
• Have you completed all the checks?
• Does your writing make sense?
When you see this symbol, it means there is a comprehension quiz
to complete at this point.
• Test yourself and keep track of your scores. • Go back over any questions you got wrong and see if you
can figure out why.
Lesson 1
Task: Put the commas in the correct places in this student’s writing.
Last Wednesday, Khaled, Tamara and I went to the park. I arrived before
them despite leaving late, getting lost and getting stuck in traffic. For twenty
minutes, I waited for them and wondered where they had got to before they
finally arrived.
I didn’t mind that they were late because they brought a wonderful picnic of
sandwiches, crisps and lemonade. Khalid apologised and said, “Sorry we
were so late”. Just before I left, my mum said that she needed everything in
the fridge for pack lunches. At the last minute, I had to unpack what I’d
made, go to the shops and make up a whole new picnic.’

When I mark my students’ essays, I get a warm and fuzzy feeling. There is one
student who works particularly hard. He understands everything that I teach
him. He remembers everything I say. He always checks for corrections. In my
opinion, he deserves a reward. This essay that I am holding in my hands now
fills me with joy and hope for the future generation. Each word rings out with
truth. The ending brings a tear to my eye. It shows that I am not such a
terrible teacher, after all.
Exercise 3
Task: Add speech punctuation and a P whenever you think there should be a
new paragraph.
“Good morning,” said Kim, “I’d like to buy a shirt please.”
The shop assistant looked at him and smiled. “Are you looking for
something smart or casual?” she asked.
“Quite smart, please,” Kim replied.
“We have a large selection over here,” the shop assistant replied. “I think
blue would suit you. Do you know your size?”
“Yes thank you. I will have a look,” replied Kim. He wandered over to the

Two days after Christmas, I decided to visit Sherlock Holmes. I wanted to wish
him a merry Christmas. When I arrived at Baker Street, I found my friend resting
on the sofa. Next to him, an old, worn, dirty hat was slouched over the back
of a chair,. I saw a magnifying glass sitting on a nearby table.
“I suppose this hat has something to do with a crime?” I asked.
“No, my dear watson Watson,” answered Holmes. “It’s not to do with a
crime, but is just one of those odd little events that take place in a large city
like London. I received the hat on Christmas morning from a policemen
policeman named Peterson.

Grammar exercises make you really think about how language works.
Because I think I know the rules, I don’t always check my work. Even though
my teacher mark’s my grammar mistakes, there is always a little voice inside
me that thinks that it is really the teacher who has made the mistake. He
work’s hard and look’s like he stay’s up too late,. I would not be surprised if he
made mistakes sometimes. Whenever he call’s me to talk to him at the end of
the lesson, he asks me if I check my work before handing it in. The essay sits
there between us on the desk,. It is covered in the teacher’s pen marks.
Because he asked me to go through my entire exercise book and label
my mistakes with the reason why they are wrong, I know that I will not be able
to go to my friend’s house after school. Even though I feel angry, I still do the
work. Each mistake on the capital letter rule, the apostrophe rule and putting
an ‘s’ on the 3rd
person of the present tense is a big wake-up call. My book
proves that I don’t know the rules as well as I think I do.

When primary school finished, my mother was always waiting for me at the
school gate. She did not miss a day. She is very punctual, and she probably
just wanted to make sure that I could not get in trouble. She is quite strict like
that. She could not stand the idea of me wasting time after school. The other
students could not believe that my mum had the time to come and meet
me. They have always laughed at me about it. It is easy to feel frustrated
when parents stop you from doing what you want to do. I did not feel
frustrated, though. I could not have persuaded her to wait for me at home
even if I had tried. My father sometimes came with her. He is a fireman, so he
is often out at night but around during the day. They have always enjoyed
hearing about my day at school.

What a lot of hairy-faced men there are around nowadays.
When a man grow’s grows hair all over his face. It face, it is impossible to tell
what he really looks like.
Perhaps thats that’s why he does it. He'd rather you didnt didn’t know.
Then there's the problem of washing.
When the very hairy one’s ones wash their faces, it must be as big a job as
when you and I wash the hair on our heads.
So what I want to know is this: how often do all these hairy-faced men wash
their faces? Is it only once a week, like us, on Sunday nights? And does do
they shampoo it? Do they use a hairdryer? Do they rubs rub hair-tonic in to
stop their face’s faces from going bald? Do they go to a barber to have their
hairy faces cut and trimmed or do they do it themselves in front of the
bathroom mirror with nail-scissors?
I don't know. But next time, you see a man with a hairy face (which will
probably be as soon as you step out on to the street) maybe you will look at
him more closely and start wondering about some of these things.
