Masthead Analysis

I created three very different designs for my possible mastheads, reason being I was not certain how I wanted the masthead to look. I was between making the masthead simple yet appealing, and making it hige, bright and bold, so that it stood out more. I also considered putting a block of colour behind it, as some magazines do this and are known for their trademark names. Although I had looked at various different masthead, and “NME” was a magazine I was inspired by, I did not like the idea of shortening a phrase to its initials for my masthead, as I wanted something different and interesting, similar to “Kerrang”. I did however, design the masthead with my chosen genre in mind, as “Repetilia” is a song by the Strokes, and they fall under the music genre of indie, meaning this word would be recognisable to indie fans, and therefore, my target audience.

Masthead Designs

FeedbackThe feedback I received, although minimal, was helpful in he decision of choosing my masthead. Many people agreed the first masthead appeared professional and that it had an original name hat would stand out.

Some liked the more simplistic masthead, and stated that the font was neat and looked organised. From this description, I decided it did not really fit the indie genre and would not sui being the masthead of an indie magazine.

Many liked the last masthead idea, as the found the block of colour behind the word made it stand out clearly and made audience more aware of its presence. I agree that the block of colour does make it more noticeable, however I do not feel it is dramatic enough to appear as a masthead.
