i’mremindedthatoneofourfleets’mostimportantcallingsisthepromotionofsailingandinvolvementofyoungsailorsinoursport.

thequesttolinkjuniorsailingalongwiththegreatenergyandenthusiasmgeneratedbyyouthparticipationto‘big’boatsandalifetimeloveofbeingonthewater,hasbeenabitofanenigmaformanyyears.yachtclubsbothlargeandsmallhavesearchedtofindtheperfectsteppingstonetoexpandthehorizonsforyoungsailors.

aggressivelygrowingthesailingschoolprogramatchicagoyachtclubservedonlytohighlightourinadequaciesinchannelingthisresource.afterconversationswithShieldsfleetmembersaroundthecountry,ibecameoneofmanyadvocatesoftheclub’sseeding

purchaseoffour‘stepping-stone’Sonarkeelboatsforthe2011season.ourcurrentandthoroughlyprofessionalSailingSchoolpersonnelwillmanagetheprogram.

whathasbeentheopinionofmysamplingofShieldssailorsonthissubject?“oncetheysailaShields,thedieiscast.itwillonlybeamatteroftimeuntiltheygetShieldsfever.”

i’mremindedofmyfirstShieldsexperience.aftersellingouroffshoreracermanyyearsago,wewerelookingforaracing‘fix’thatwouldminimizetheenormoustolloftimeandeffortthathadbecomepartofourlives.theboathadtobeeasytomaintainyetfuntorace.

igotalateafternooncallinvitingmeforaneveningShieldssail.astriteasitsounds,thenightwasdarkandstormy.thequicktripoutoftheharborgotmypulseup,butwhenwepoppedthechute,iwasa‘goner.’theimmediatesurgeofwater–notpastthelife-lines,butwithinreachofmyhands,glowedphosphores-centinthemoonlight.itisstillfreshinmymindtoday.ihadonlyonequestionformyfriendgeneaboutmakingtheleap.whatwasthat‘creaking’soundikepthearingasweweresailing?itturnedoutthattheboatwasfine,butourhosthadaprostheticlegthatwasindireneedoflubrication.

asalways,anyonevisitingchicagoiswelcometocomeforaShieldsrideandafresh-waterfacialifit’sblowinghard.ilookforwardtoseeingeveryoneinSeptemberatour47thnationalchampionships.

captain’sharboringreenwich,ctwaswheretheoriginalShieldsfleet2racedinthe60’sand70’s.indianharbor,oldgreenwichandriversideyachtclubswererepresentedbyover25Shieldswhichwerethedominantone-designclassintheareaatthetime,andmanyhavefondmemoriesofthetightcompetitionandcamaraderieafterracing.

Beginninginthelate70’s,theetchellsandJ/24sbegantodisplaceShieldsincaptain’sharbor,andbythe80’sfleet2wasgone,butnotforgotten.thenewclassesenjoyedgrowthintothe90’sbuttheytoobegantofade,ascompetitorstiredofthehassleofdrysailing.threeyearsago,agroupatindianharborconductedadetailedanalysisofwhathappenedtoonedesignsailing,andwhatshouldbedonetorevitalizeit.

asurveywasconductedinwhichmemberswereaskedfortheirpreferenceamongawiderangeofonedesignboats,andtheconclusionwasaboatthatiswetsailed,whichistacticalandnottechnicalsomembersofallagescanraceonalevelplayingfieldgeneratedthegreatestinterest.anotherimportantelementwasthepresenceoflocalfleetsforintraclubracingandsupport.thentherecessioncamealong,andtheprojectwasdrydockedwhilemembersrodeoutthestorm.

lastfall,tedgravesandrickhendeetookanotherlookatthestudyandconcludedthatonlyoneboatmetallthecriteria:theShields.theyreachedouttocomcrocker,JohnMawe,dualMacintyre,“hl”deVoreandrolandSchulzoffleet1(larchmont,ny)andwayneMarcianooffleet5(oysterBay,ny)forhelp.Shieldssailorssprangintoaction,andatestsailwasquicklyarrangedbyfleet1,completewith2boatsandafullracecommittee!over20Shieldsracersshoweduptomaketheoctober30theventabigsuccess,andtherestastheysayishistory.

fleet2wasrebornatindianharborin2011,withgrowinginterestfromriversideandoldgreenwichyachtclubs.MembersarepurchasingShieldsindividu-allyandcaptain’sharboronedesignfleetassociation,anon-profitsailingfoundation,wasestablishedforthosememberswhowanttosailaShields,butprefertobepartofafractionalownershipprogram.withonlyfivemembersperboat,costisveryreasonableandthegroupiscommittedtohavingfun.

fleet2looksforwardtothe2011seasonandsailingwithfleets1and5atleastonceamonth,includingthedistricts,larchmontraceweek,indianharbor’sclassicyachtregattaandthenationalsatoysterBay.fleet2isrevitalizingonedesignsailingatcaptain’sharborthankstothetimelessappealoftheShields,andtheenthusiasticsupportoffleets1and5.

Sailingfrommid-Marchthroughthanksgiving,theveryshortwinterisusedtocompletelyinspectandservicealloftheboatsasneededandthenfluffandbuffthemallinaflurryofpaintingandvarnishingandwaxingandcleaningbeforespringsplashing.itisanambitiousschedule,buttheteamatoakcliff,includingsaplings(staff)andacorns(intern/apprentice)aswellasmanysupportersandvolunteersworkwithdeterminationtogetthehugefleetreadyandintopshapeeachspring.

thisyearadded,attentionhasbeenpaidtotheliveryof6ShieldswithinthelargeroakclifffleetsothattheyareintopshapefortheseasonandtheShieldsnationalsSeptember21-24whichisco-hostedbyoakcliffSailingandScyc.oakcliff ’sfleetincludehullnumbers:20Mischief,167Mayhem,202Symphony,228Skimmer,246Vivo.

oakcliff ’sShieldsareavailableforfull-seasonchartersforthosewishingtosailnationals.aseasoncharterincludesallShieldsfleetfiveevents:SundaysatSeawanhaka,thedistrictsandofcourse,thenationals.ifboatsarenotcharteredfortheseason,theymaybeavailableforanationals-onlycharter.

ByfarthepreferenceistohaveallsixboatsoutonthewaterconsistentlyandthroughouttheseasonrebuildingShieldsfleetfiveinoysterBayalongsideScyc.

theboatscomefullyriggedwithagoodsuitofsailsthatwouldbereservedforyourracing.ondaysthatyoudon’tplantousetheboat,wemayusethemforoakcliffSupporters.itcostsoakcliff$18,000tooperateoneShieldsforaseason.thisincludesthewintermaintenance,bottompaintingandprepping,cleaning,andregularequipmentmaintenanceandreplacement.itdoesnotincludeoverheadorwinterstorage.weareaskingthatcharterersbecomesupportersofoakcliffbymakingasignificantcontributiontowardscoveringthiscost.

asoneofoakcliff ’smoreversatilefleets,theShieldsarenotonlyusedforfleetfiveevents;theyarealsousedformatchracepracticeandracing,andweekdayfleetracing.withtheirclassiclinesandlocalheritagetheyfitrightinwiththeoakcliffclassicyachts.ifyouhaven’tsailedaShieldsinawhile,youcantrythemoutbysigningupforourearlyracing.

theShieldstechnicalcommitteeiscomposedofsevenmembersandthenationalMeasurerandhasbeenactiveinseveralprojectsthisoff-season.thefollowingtopicsareactivelyonouragenda: 1.guidelinesrelatedtore-buildingShieldsdecks,deadwood andothercommonrepairs. 2.updatestotherule(SectionV-1.7)thattheSailinventory cardbedeliveredtothenationalMeasurerbyaugust15 ofeachyear(notethatthisrulehasneverbeenimplemented). 3.proposalthatthemainsailcanbeloose-footedandthe upperbattenbefulllength. 4.enforcementoftheBasicrulesofuniformity.

re-buildiNg guideliNes: basic rulesSection iii-3.0 Basic Rule governing Substantial damage to a Registered yachtinthecaseofsubstantialdamagetoaregisteredyacht,thefleetSecretaryshallreporttheextentofsuchdamagetothenationalMeasurer.theMeasurermaytakeactiontoensurethatafterrepairtheyachtcontinuestoperformtotheSpecifications.

Section iii-8.0 admonition to authorized Builder(s)theauthorizedbuilder(s)shallnotchangethedesignofthehull,deck,spars,riggingorequipmentsuppliedonthenewboatsorplacedontheexistingboatswithoutfirstrequestingapprovalfromthegoverningBoard.thetechnicalcommitteeshallreviewsuchrequestsandmakearecommendationtotheBoard.anychangesthatareapprovedshallberelayedtotheauthorizedbuilder(s)inwriting.

thetechnicalcommitteehasagreedthattheownerorhiscontractedboatshopdoingmorethanannualpatching,fairingandpaintingMuStnotifythenationalMeasurerastothenatureoftherepairandthetechniquetobeusedandthisshouldoccurbeforestartingworktoinsureenforcementoftheBasicruleofuniformity.thenationalMeasurer,withinputfromthetechnicalcommittee,willpromptlyruleonthelegalityoftherepair.ownerswhoproceedwithrepairswithoutpermissionmayfindthattheirboatjudgednotcompliant.there-buildingguidelines(whenavailable)willprovideassistanceinthisprocess.

Mainsheetbailisrequiredforthemainsheetturningblock(s) at12feet1-7/8inchesfromtheafterfaceofthemast. d. aband,1inchwideandofacontrastingcolorshallbe placedontheboomwiththeinneredgelocated13feet 3-5/8inchesfromtheafterfaceofthemast. e. aband,1inchwideandofacontrastingcolorshallbe placedonthemastwiththeupperedgelocated2feet5 inchesabovethedeckatthecenterline. f. fore/aft(18inches)andninetydegree(15inches)jibsheet tracksbothstarboardandportmustbeinstalled.theaft endofthefore/afttrackmustbe38”center-to-center. g. themaststepplacementmustconformtoShieldsMast Steplocationguide(SectioniV-5.11)andifmovedmust becertifiedbyafleetmeasurer.theaftedgeofthemast partnersshallbe11feet3-3/8inches(+/-3/8inch)froma verticalprojectionofthemooringlinegrooveinthebow chock.themastpartnersshallbenomorethan7-1/2 inchesintheforeandaftdirection. h. oneortwosmallholesnottoexceed3/8inchindiameter atthetopoftheaftbulkheadtoaccommodatelinesfor trimmingthebackstaymaybeused.otherperforations inthebulkheadsshallbewatertightwhileracing.foreand aftbulkheadhatchesshallbeinplaceandbefullyseated andsecuredagainstgasketsofsoftrubberoritsequivalent. i. twocockpitseatsarerequiredandshallconsistofnoless than6slats,1/2inchthick,1-1/2incheswideand 51incheslong. j. anti-foulingpaintshallbeusedonthebottomatalltimes. k. thespinnakerpolelengthmustnotexceed9feet4inches (includingfittings)andiftaperedcanonlytaperto2inches. l. fleet10islookingforwardtoanotherbusysummerseason.wehaveapproximatelytenboatsthatraceregularly.racingbeginsonJune2andconcludesonlabordayweekend.tworacesarescheduledforeverythursdayeveningandSaturdayafternoonforatotalofnearly50races.inaddition,manyofuswillgotoedgartowntoattendtheirregattainearlyJuly.

Spinnakersarenotusedinourthursdayeveningraces.thismakesiteasiertofindcrew,makesitmorefunforfamilymembers,andisagoodwaytointroducenewcomerstoShieldsracing.onSaturdays,weusespinnakers,andbecauseofourwindyconditions,wealsoallowuseofasmallerexperimentalspinnaker.thesespinnakershaveprovenpopular,andwerecommendthatotherfleetslookintotheiruse.

thisyear,wearegoingtohaveaguestSkipperregattawithuptofourraces.theskipperofeachboatwillbeaninvitedsailorwhodoesnotnormallysailinShieldsbuthasexpressedaninterestintheboats.crewwillbeeitherinvitedyachtsmenorregularShieldssailors.thepurposeoftheregattaistogeneratenewinterestinShieldsamonglocalsailors.

Billrich,longtimesailorinShieldsfleet#1inlongislandSound,passedawaypeacefullyonapril9duetocomplicationsofwaldenstrom’sdisease,arareformofleukemia.Billowned,skipperedandlovedgaudeamus,#106,formanyyears.healsoactedasguestskipper,helmsmanandtacticianonnumerousotherboatsandwasactiveinfleetactivities,servingasfleetchairmanforseveralyears.

BorninBrooklynin1923,Billreceivedamaster’sdegreefromyaleafterservingasanofficerinthelegendary8tharmyaircorpsinasiaduringwwii.hehadanaward-winningcareerinadvertisingandmarketingaspresidentofrich,Bryan&curtis,inc.formorethan40years.Billresidedinnewrochelle,nywhereheandMarykatherineraisedfourchildren.Bill’sfirstpriorityanddevotionwasalwayshisfamily.heissurvivedbyMarykatherine,threechildrenandthreegrandchildren,thelightofhislateryears.

Bill’strueintroductiontosailingcameinafive-daycruiseinthelate1960’saboardVenturer,whichwasco-ownedbyBertharnett,hislife-longclosestfriend.inpreparationforthistrip,Billtaughthimselftonavigatebythestars.thattripbeganaloveaffairwithsailingandthecamaraderiethatgoeswithitthatneverended.inadditiontoaverysuccessfulyraoflongislandSoundcareer,BillparticipatedinseveralShieldsnationals.hewasalsoanavidfrostbiter,sailingdyerdhowswellintohissixties.afterhisactiveracingcareerdrewtoacloseinhisseventies,Billcontinuedtobeveryactiveasahighlyregardedracejudgeatlocal,regionalandnationallevels.healsoeditedtheMainsheet,thepublicationoflarchmontyachtclub.Billwasamuch-lovedmainstayatlyc.hismemorialwasheldthereandhisasheswillbescatteredfromtheclubassoonasaShieldsisinthewater.
