TACOMA DEFIANCE at COLORADO SPRINGS | JUNE 8, 2019 - 5:00 P.M. PT

Forward Justin Dhillon on May 18 vs. Reno 1868 FC scored just nine seconds into the match, earn-ing a place in the record books for fastest goal in USL Championship history.

Jesse Daley took the game’s opening kickoff and sent a pass to Dhillon, who found Gonzalez streak-ing down the left side. Gonzalez sent a cross into the area which found Dhillon, who calmly headed home Tacoma’s lone goal of the evening in the 1-1 draw.

DEFIANCE WEEKLY NOTES

TACOMA REBRANDIn a series of key announcements on January 30 at a press conference inside Cheney Stadium, the Tacoma Rainiers and Seattle Sounders FC unveiled the long-awaited new brand for the organizations’ United Soccer League club: Tacoma Defiance. Set to begin play under this new identity immediately, Tacoma’s professional soccer side now officially bears the name of its hometown, while proudly pay-ing homage to the city’s maritime roots and deep sense of civic identity. The Tacoma Defiance is led by Head Coach Chris Little, who guided the Sound-ers FC Academy U-17 squad to the 2017-2018 U.S. Soccer Development Academy National Champi-onship and the 2018 U-17 Generation Adidas Cup title.

Sounders FC Academy U-17s won the 2019 Gen-eration adidas Cup Champions Division, defeating Spanish side Valencia CF 1-0 in the final on April 20 in Frisco, Texas. As the reigning champs of the GA Cup Premier Division and the only MLS club to even advance to the tournament’s title match in the Champions Division, the Rave Green have etched their names in history as the first North American side to win the event. Sounders FC had to go through Brazilian side Flamengo, Argentine power-house River Plate and England’s West Ham United to even reach the Champions Division final.

With the match seeming destined for penalties, Alfonso Ocampo-Chavez’s cross found the head of Tacoma midfielder Ray Serrano, who guided his shot past the goalkeeper with only seconds remain-ing in the second period of extra time.

U-17’S WIN GA CUP FINAL

Tacoma Defiance on May 31 announced that it has signed defender Everardo Rubio. The signing is pending receipt of his P-1 Visa and International Transfer Certificate. The 22-year-old has played the last four seasons with Murciélagos FC in Mexico. The signing brings the Defiance roster to 19 play-ers.

Rubio has totaled 1,482 minutes across 20 matches in the last four seasons for Murciélagos FC, includ-ing 18 starts. He made his professional debut at 18 years of age in Ascenso MX, the second profes-sional level of the Mexican soccer system.

Forward Justin Dhillon on Saturday vs. El Paso Locomotive FC extended his scoring streak to five games with his maker in the 42nd minute. He has scored in each of the team’s last five contests dating back to May 12 vs. Portland Timbers 2. Dhillon leads the club with five goals this season, three ahead of second-place Azriel Gonzalez. The forward also paces the club in shots (25) and shots on goal (15), and is tied for second in games played (12).

LAST MATCH RECAPTacoma Defiance (2-10-3, 9 points) on Saturday had its three-game unbeaten streak snapped with a 2-1 loss to El Paso Locomotive FC (5-2-5, 20 points) at Cheney Stadium. Justin Dhillon scored his team-leading fifth marker of the season, his fifth con-secutive match with a goal.

In the 42nd minute, Dhillon received a pass from Aleks Berkolds and made a move to his right before firing a shot to the bottom right corner of the goal. The assist was the first in the professional career of Berkolds. Dhillon has now scored five of the team’s last eight goals over a five-game stretch.

El Paso netted the first goal of the evening in the 31st minute. Jerome Kiesewetter chipped Tacoma goal-keeper Bryan Meredith in close to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage.

In the 68th minute, Omar Salgado found Calvin Rezende on the far post who calmly finished to make it a 2-1 contest. The goal was the second of the sea-son for Rezende.

Four players under the age of 20 saw action for Taco-ma, including two First Team players in Danny Leyva and Alfonso Ocampo-Chavez.
