SHIRT TALESThe 2008/09 and 2009/10 seasons saw Cherries fans experience highs, lows and everything sandwiched between those two contrasting emotions, as the team had three managers, nearly went out of the Football League and then managed to win promotion back to League One. Talk about roller coaster!

Post administration, in the summer of 2008, the club’s then owners Sport 6 agreed a kit deal with high street chain JD Sports. It was triumphed by newly appointed chief executive Alistair Saverimutto as the biggest kit deal in the club’s history. The in-house deal with Bourne Red had become null and void after administration so JD Sports, under their Carbrini Sportswear brand, would make and sponsor the Cherries kits for an initial three years. The agreement was extended in 2011 and is still in place now, but now with Fila as suppliers.

Although their first set of kits weren’t exactly traditional, they were pleasant on the eye with the away shirt the best of the three. It was predominately black with red piping on the shoulders and under both arms. White also made an appearance - albeit a discreet one – on the edge of the sleeves and main body of the shirt. The Cherries crest was centrally positioned for the first time since the Great Escape mark I – perhaps that was a good omen from the kit makers! Their branding appeared above the badge and below it too and they

weren’t identical either which was a sensible touch. The JD logo was neatly positioned below the player’s number and it was the first time we had ever seen a sponsor on the back of a Bournemouth shirt.

The season 2008/09 started with a -17 points deduction and the first outing for the new away shirt was in the second game as a point was gained from the short trip to Aldershot. This would be the only time a team managed by Kevin Bond wore it as he was sacked at the start of September to be replaced by Jimmy Quinn, with Jason Tindall as his assistant. Quinn’s time in charge was as forgettable as Bond’s – just think Morecambe at home or Blyth Spartans – and he was gone, as 2008 became 2009, to be replaced by Eddie Howe with Tindall staying as assistant.

Over the next 18 months I believe some of the key moments that meant avoiding relegation and winning promotion happened whilst this shirt was being worn. I think I have the evidence to back it up as well, although Howe’s first two games in charge were both away from home, both defeats and both wearing this shirt, so things didn’t get off to the best of starts!

To me, the turning point for staying up, was at the intriguingly named London Borough of Barking & Dagenham Stadium, where Mark Molseley etched his name into Cherries folklore with a

last minute winner against Dagenham in a game we didn’t deserve to win but did, wearing this shirt. Steve Fletcher made his 500th League appearance that cold February night and suddenly we believed.

Further proof that we would stay up came from St James’ Park, Exeter in March, where Brett Pitman scored twice in a 3-1 defeat of the Grecians. One of his strikes is up there with Moulden’s chip and Macdougall’s header as best Cherries goal ever. Shirt worn that evening? Black away.

Of course relegation was avoided and then the next season we somehow won promotion to League One. Two matches stick out in my mind as catalysts for the elevation and they were both away from home in the space of four days in late January and early February. You don’t need me to tell you which shirt we were wearing, as I think it’s obvious, but the wins over Crewe and Rotherham were extremely pivotal.

So although the design of this shirt didn’t really make it stand head and shoulders above anything we had ever worn before, the important events of two seasons whilst wearing it thrusts it firmly into the forefront of supporters’ minds when thinking about iconic Cherries shirts of recent times.

At the end of the day we are all supporters and as such hate to see the lads struggle or make mistakes in any game but at this level it’s going to happen. There is nothing we can do on the pitch to change anything. What we can do is make a huge difference off the pitch by supporting the lads, especially when they are going through a difficult period in the game.

There is nothing more debilitating for the players than to have some of our own supporters highlighting their every mistake when they are already under intense pressure. It always has a double effect. Firstly, it adds even more pressure on our lads, often resulting in them making poor decisions. Secondly, and of equal importance, it motivates the visiting team.

I would like to extend a very warm welcome to the directors, staff, players and supporters from our visitors this afternoon, Millwall.Following a slow start to the season, our visitors arrive at the Goldsands Stadium having beaten two of our recent opponents Blackpool and Leeds United. We know from our past encounters they are always formidable opposition.

It’s become a cliché this season, there are no easy games in the Championship, and the fact that we have last seasons FA Cup semi-finalists visiting us today adequately sums up that statement. We are now competing in the top division of the Football League; it is challenging and provides the ultimate test each and every week. Our last home fixture against Blackburn Rovers was clear

the Goldsands a fortress this season and we can help them make that happen by getting behind the team for the full ninety minutes. The proof was there for all to see with the spirited second half performance against Blackburn Rovers and the battling display at Leeds United. There is no doubt in my mind you drove that momentum by getting behind the team.

We’ll be aiming to respond well to two disappointing results. Against Blackburn I was disappointed with our first half performance, where we lacked the quality on the ball that we’ve consistently shown.

I thought we showed real character in the second half, and despite going down to ten men, our performance was excellent.

We picked up where we left off at Elland Road and made a really bright start against Leeds, before losing Ryan Allsop to another red card. Coming so early in the game it made it really difficult, and despite getting ourselves back in the game and defending heroically we weren’t able to hold on.

Darryl Flahavan came on, saved a penalty, and was excellent throughout the game. It is so important that our squad are ready to perform when called upon, and Darryl showed what a great professional he is by doing just that.

There were a number of good performances at Leeds, none more so than Jack Collison who only met his new team-mates hours before kick off and went straight into the starting eleven. We are delighted to have a player of Jack’s quality with us for the next month.

A special thank you for the fantastic support we received at Leeds. Our fans stayed with us throughout and

despite the result, it gave the players a huge boost to be supported in that manner.

We are a young squad adjusting to a higher division, and are totally committed to sticking to our principles while we do so. We are lucky to have fans who appreciate how we play and who share our excitement about the direction in which we are trying to go. Thanks for always backing us, and please keep doing so even in adversity.

THE SKIPPERGood afternoon and welcome to the Goldsands Stadium, with today’s visitors being Millwall.

After two consecutive defeats and with the international break imminent, we are determined to end this latest section of games with a win.

For those who didn’t travel to Leeds on Tuesday night, it was a sucker punch for the lads not to get anything from the game. We produced a really gritty, determined display to keep Leeds out for so long, and then despite going a goal down, to get the equaliser with only ten men showed how well we were playing.

Seeing Rocky get sent off so early in the game was a massive loss but it was brilliant to see Flavs come on and save a penalty straight away. Being a substitute ‘keeper is possibly one of the

most frustrating situations as you are hardly ever called upon, but when you are, you are

chucked straight in at the deep end and called into action straight away. And this is exactly what Flavs did for us on Tuesday by coming on and pulling off the penalty save. This just shows the measure of the man and what a great professional he is, as he has been waiting for his chance.

It was also good to see Jack Collison come in and pull the Cherries shirt on. Despite the signing only going through that afternoon, he applied himself to Tuesday’s match impeccably, and hopefully whilst he’s here for the month his Premier League class will help us pick up points.

Today we take on a Millwall team who will be hurting from a heavy defeat on Tuesday night as well as looking to put right their slow start, but we don’t want to be the ones to give them a hand up. We are focusing on ourselves as ever, and it’s important we go into the break on the back of a home win, which you will be vital to once again.

PREVIOUS ENCOUNTERSThe two clubs have met on almost 60 occasions in league and cup competitions, with Millwall winning 32 of those games. The most recent encounter came in a League Cup first round tie in August 2009 when Neil Harris put a swift end to the Cherries’ first cup run of the season with a hat-trick in a 4-0 win. But the season ended on a high for Eddie Howe’s team after they turned their attentions to domestic action and secured promotion from League Two at the end of the campaign.

FAMILIAR FACESDavid Forde, Scott McDonald and Scott Malone return to the Goldsands Stadium as Millwall players this afternoon following spells on the south coast. The Republic of Ireland number one made 11 appearances while on loan from Cardiff City, but was unable to help the Cherries avoid relegation in 2008. Malone spent a season with the club and after initially joining on loan, he made the move permanent on New Year’s Day 2012. Meanwhile, Liam Feeney is out on loan at Bolton and made his debut for the Trotters last weekend.

FA CUP SPECIALISTSFew clubs outside the Premier League have enjoyed as much success in the FA Cup as Millwall. They became the first second tier club since 1982 to reach the final when they achieved the feat in 2004. They lost to Manchester United at the Millennium Stadium that season, but made their way through to the semi-final last term where they were beaten by eventual winners Wigan Athletic. “We would have loved to have gone one further but realistically we have to be proud of what the players have done,” former manager Kenny Jackett said.


The LionsMillwall arrive at the Goldsands Stadium as one of the Championship’s in form teams, looking to carry their momentum into the international break.

02ALAN DUNNE Dunne’s career started with real promise, but injuries slowed his progress before he established himself as a first team regular in the 2004/05 season. In recent campaigns, he has found himself in a battle with Jack Smith and Adam Smith for the right-back slot. However, towards the end of last season Dunne had reclaimed the right-back berth as his own and produced arguably some of the best football of his career. He has made seven appearances this season, but was sent off against Brighton.

03DANNY SHITTU Shittu’s return for a second spell at The Den saw the Nigerian international gain near legendary status with the supporters, who voted him as player of the year following some monumental displays in the heart of defence, as he helped the Lions reach the FA Cup Semi-Final and also secured a fourth successive campaign in the Championship. The centre-half was originally with the club before a move to Queens Park Rangers. A commanding and reliable presence, he adds experience to Lomas’ team.

05PAUL ROBINSON The long serving defender was at his imperious best two seasons ago, but endured a torrid 2012/13 campaign, which was blighted by injury and restricted him to just two starts. A visit to a specialist in America was followed by subsequent surgery for the skipper and a lengthy spell of rehabilitation, but he was able to return to training ahead of pre-season and is intent on making up for lost time. He was granted a testimonial year by the club following ten years of service in east London.

28SCOTT MALONE A talented left sided player who needs no introduction to Cherries supporters following his one and only season with the club, which came two years ago. Signed by Lee Bradbury on a six-month loan from Wolves, he made a steady start to life on the south coast but excelled when injuries meant he moved into midfield. With the ability to pass defenders with ease and a cool head, he is a real threat going forward. Expect him to start at full-back this afternoon though.

06LIAM TROTTER Having made an impression following a loan spell at The Den, Trotter returned for a second stint with the Lions by signing a permanent deal. During the 2011/12 season the versatile midfielder further enhanced his reputation as one of the best operators in the centre of the park in the Championship. He will be a key figure as Millwall look to challenge in the top half of the division this time round.

01DAVID FORDE Last season was one to remember for the former Cherries loanee as he established himself as number one for club and country. Forde travelled to Euro 2012 with the Republic squad as back-up to Shay Given and Kieran Westwood. But by the end of the campaign Forde was first choice for Kenny Jackett and Giovani Trappatoni following an exceptional season for the Lions in goal where he produced some heroic displays along with 16 clean sheets.

10NICKY BAILEY The talented midfielder is back in London after time in the north east with Middlesbrough. He was relegated with Charlton in 2008, but his class was obvious as Bailey finished as top scorer at The Valley. He eventually signed for Middlesbrough in June 2010 and spent the majority of his career at the Riverside Stadium as a more defence-minded midfield player, reducing his impressive goal tally each season up to that point. He is regarded as a key player in Lomas’ team and is instrumental in their attacks.

11MARTYN WOOLFORD Lions supporters remembered Woolford well before he joined the club as it was his goal that broke their hearts in the 2009 play-off final when he bagged the winning goal for Scunthorpe United. He made over 100 appearances for the Irons before switching to Bristol City, while his career also includes time in non-league with York City and Glasshoughton Welfare. A winger who can also operate along the midfield or in support of the attack, he adds vital versatility to the club’s attack.

26NADJIM ABDOU An integral part of the Lions squad in recent seasons, Abdou is well liked in east London and is a Comoros international. During the 2010/11 season he went on to make his international debut, but it was in the following campaign that he was to have his best season to date, winning the Millwall player of the year award. He is the model of combative consistency and has proved to be a thoroughly dependable player through some difficult times.

29MARTYN WAGHORN The forward joined Millwall on a 93-day emergency loan from Leicester City in early September and scored on his Lions debut as a second-half substitute just 24 hours later against Derby County. In the summer of 2010 former City boss, Paulo Sousa parted with a reported £3m to bring the frontman to the King Power Stadium, but his chances have been limited and he has made the most of loan spells during his time with the Foxes.

08JERMAINE EASTER After spells with Colchester United, MK Dons, Swansea City and Crystal Palace, Easter returned to The Den in the latter part of the 2012/13 season, marking his second ‘debut’ for the club by scoring with his very first touch in a 2-0 away win at Charlton. Although he returned to Crystal Palace at the end of the season, a third spell with the Lions began in July 2013 as he signed a one-year deal.

What have you made of the changes at the club since you left? There has been a lot of change with the investment and everything that has gone with it. I was really pleased that they got promoted last season and you can see the progress they have made with the stadium developments and the new stand. I’ve played Bournemouth at The Den, but this will be the first time I’ve been back to Dean Court and I’m looking forward to it.

You have been at Millwall for five years now, so what is it about the place that brings out the best in you? It happens at all levels where players go to clubs and they fit like a glove, forgive the pun. Millwall certainly suits me as a player and a person, so it has been a great move for me. I’ve enjoyed every minute of it.

What have your preparations been like for this afternoon’s game? Millwall were on a great run of form but lost to Birmingham City in midweek. We went into the game full of confidence and it was a disappointing result. But we have had some good results recently and it’s difficult to sustain that level of performance in the Championship. We had put a lot into the previous games and maybe we looked a bit leggy, but we have the chance to bounce back on Saturday. Bournemouth play some good football and we know it will be a difficult place to go.

Kenny Jackett sold it to me that they would be building a squad that could win promotion and that was certainly the case. I actually saved a Neil Harris penalty while I was at Bournemouth and that probably helped me seal the move.

From inside The DenGoalkeeper David Forde is looking forward to his first visit back to the south coast since his loan spell at the Goldsands Stadium in 2008.

Do you have good memories from your loan spell with the Cherries? I have very fond memories because going on loan to Bournemouth gave me the kick start my career probably needed. It was a really good move for me and a thoroughly enjoyable loan spell. Unfortunately it ended in relegation, but the fight we put up after the points deduction was really strong. We were 15 points off safety at one point, but we managed to get it down to the last day where we drew with Carlisle. In the end, it wasn’t enough and results elsewhere relegated us. It was a disappointing way to leave the club, but it was an important move for me and helped me go on and make nearly 250 appearances for Millwall and represent my country.

You were part of the team that almost pulled off the great escape that season. Was it disappointing to fall short after going so close to avoiding relegation? We hit an unbelievable run of form and we had some good players at the club, with people like Sam Vokes, Maxi Gradel and Jason Pearce. Expert’s OpinionSouthwark News reporter Alex Aldridge explains how new manager Steve Lomas turned things around at The Den after a slow start to the season.

Millwall go into today’s game as one of the Championship’s form teams. What are the reasons behind their recent positive results? There was a feeling around the club and in the squad during pre-season that the players Steve Lomas had brought in in the summer would really take the club forward. So, there was a little bit of panic when the results at the start of the season weren’t what everyone expected. The first five or six matches came as a bit of a shock to the system because they went against everything that had been predicted.

But, in fairness, even when they were losing the performances were ok. They were losing games by the odd goal and they kept finding themselves on the wrong side of the fine margins.

There was a sense that things would change, but I don’t think there was one turning point. You could point to the fact that Lomas brought back in some of the more experienced players, who have been at the club for a while. The Millwall spine has stood them in good stead because they had won three games in a row before the midweek games.

The away form has been pretty good, with a win in the derby against Charlton a few weeks ago. Does playing away suit Millwall? I really do think the home form is down to a fear of playing at The Den. Nobody wanted to admit it, but after the defeat to Derby the players spoke about it being a confidence issue. The Den is a great place to play if the fans are behind you and it should be a nightmare for opposition teams, but that hasn’t always been the case. Also, I think the tactics just suit them when they play away from home.

There are a few former Cherries players in the Millwall squad, including David Forde, Scott Malone and Scott MacDonald. Can we expect to see them on the pitch this afternoon? At this rate, I think there’s a good chance of David Forde and Scott Malone starting the game. Forde is the Republic of Ireland’s number one, so he’s the first name on the team-sheet. I think he’s really improved in the last two years and he’s a real leader now. He commands his area as well as any ‘keeper in the league and we saw that against Leeds last weekend.

Scott Malone didn’t quite break into the team last season and he admitted that he didn’t quite have the belief he needed. But he came into the team for the Blackpool game at the start of the winning run and has made the left back spot his own.

Liam Feeney joined Bolton on loan a few weeks ago. Is there a chance he could feature in the return fixture? It’s a difficult one with him. He’s gone out on loan and it was slightly surprising that he went to Bolton. He had a decent pre-season and said he felt a new manager coming in had given him a bit of a confidence boost, but it hasn’t quite worked out for him. He’s with Bolton for three months and where that leaves him in January I don’t know. There’s a question mark over whether he will be around for the return fixture.

What would be a good result for Millwall this afternoon? With the way they are playing at the moment and given that they generally play well away from home, I would have said a win. But there’s no way they would accept anything less than a draw.

Boscombe produced a very convincing performance against Millwall despite an outbreak of flu amongst the players which had hindered their preparations leading up to the game. Before travelling north to watch the Cherries’ forthcoming FA Cup opponents Oswestry Town, manager Freddie Cox gave a League debut at inside-left to Mike Burgess, who was normally the reserve team centre-half. Eager to impress, the newcomer was quickly into the thick of the action, soon feeding a sharp pass through to Dickie Dowsett, who turned the ball across goal to give Brian Loughnane a shooting opportunity, although the Boscombe winger was well wide of the mark.

The first goal was not long in coming and in the 10th minute Dowsett squared the ball across the Millwall goal and Brian Bedford banged it home from just a few yards out. This spurred the Cherries on and within a couple of minutes they had scored again when Burgess headed home Dowsett’s free-kick. Despite the deficit, Millwall fought back keenly and in several spells the Boscombe rearguard struggled to hold them but the Londoners were unable to finish strongly enough.

Burgess showed remarkable speed and shooting ability, and the Lions goalkeeper Bill Lloyd was pleased to see the Boscombe man’s 25-yard effort just fail to find the net. Then after 28 minutes, Dowsett dashed down the right once again, cut in, drew Lloyd from his goal and slid the ball across

for Bedford to hit it home. As half-time neared, Millwall forced several corners and Cherries goalkeeper Bill Heath was in action several times, most notably in saving a sharp shot from Brian Johnson.

Immediately after the second half began Boscombe resumed the pressure on Millwall’s goal and Lloyd was soon busy once again. First he plucked a side-footed shot from Loughnane out of the air and then he diverted a fierce 20-yard shot from Bedford over the crossbar. The Cherries raided continuously and on one occasion Bedford had the ball in the Millwall net only for the goal to be disallowed for offside, but he stuck to his task and minutes later he went close to scoring again with a scorching low drive.

Remarkably, despite Boscombe’s best efforts, the score remained unchanged until the last minute, when after Burgess had smacked the ball against an upright, Bedford rammed home another ball from Dowsett to complete his hat-trick and send the majority of those in the crowd of 11,086 home happy!

“I DISMISSED THE BOURNEMOUTH JOB TO START WITH, BUT THE MORE I THOUGHT ABOUT IT I KNEW THAT RETURNING HOME WAS WHAT I NEEDED TO DO.”

The scene was set, the league leaders were in town and expectations were high. AFC Bournemouth may have been some 19 points behind and 20 places below their opponents Tranmere Rovers, but the home crowd could sense something special was about to happen.

After all, Eddie Howe and Jason Tindall were back in the dug out after 18 months away with Burnley. They had only known success during their first spell in charge and it only seemed right that they started the second with a win.

But this was more than just three points. It was the start of a new era and a defining moment in a season that ended with a promotion achieved against all the odds.

It’s an afternoon Howe can reflect on with positive memories approaching the anniversary of his and Tindall’s return, even if he didn’t feel the same way 12 months ago.

“Coming back could have gone either way,” he says. “There’s always that fear it could go wrong although I didn’t really feel it until the first game, when I thought if we lose today they’ll be thinking what has he come back for? Thankfully we won and the rest has just fallen into place.”

It’s a typically understated summary of the last year at the Goldsands Stadium from Howe and it doesn’t quite do justice to the scale of the achievement from the squad that won promotion to the Championship. But what’s not up for debate is that their decision to return to the south coast was undoubtedly brave and ultimately correct.

It was also one dictated by personal circumstances as much as professional preferences following the

“It was the darkest time of my life,” says Howe. “I just wasn’t prepared for what happened. It was very sudden and I had no life experience in that way, I was very naive. You don’t always have yourself to think about, I’ve got three brothers and a sister and I felt the family was in a bad way.

“But I was in a high-profile job. My mum died on the Saturday morning and I missed the game against Crystal Palace, but on Monday and Tuesday you are expected back at work. I found that very difficult when I was so far away from people who were very distressed. I went back to work, you just can’t take time

off. Burnley needs you, the players need you and you are there to do your job.

“I dismissed the Bournemouth job to start with, I thought I had no interest in returning home and I had a job to do in Burnley. But the more I had the chance to think about where I was at mentally with everything I knew that returning home was what I needed to do.”

Howe returned from Lancashire wiser and more experienced and the anniversary of the start of his second spell as manager represents an opportunity for reflection. He admits he moved on too soon and that external factors influenced his decision to accept Burnley’s offer to become their manager. But he does so content in the knowledge that he has benefited from time away from familiar surroundings.

“I think I probably should have stayed at Bournemouth, we had made a great start and were in a great position in League One and looking back it was too early for me to go. I’d been managing for 18 months but when you’re presented with opportunities it’s sometimes difficult to say no. I felt I was too young for offers from Peterborough and Southampton, I had only

been in the job six months and thought I needed to stay.

“Then came Crystal Palace, Charlton and Burnley all at the same time and that dragged on a bit. I felt if I turned down another one I would be labelled with a lack of ambition or being too comfortable. It was really because of other people that I took the job to prove that I could do it, picking the one that I believed was the most difficult and furthest away.”

The changes and improvements Howe has made to the side this season are noticeable and matched by the club’s business in the transfer market. Long gone are the days of giving chances to unproven players from the lower leagues, scouting and recruitment is now an operation which crosses continents. However, there are some things that will never change.

Fast forward two and a half years and both Howe and the Cherries are back in the Championship and more than holding their own after an encouraging start to the season. It’s clear that this is a club that isn’t prepared to stand still and neither is its manager. The cautious optimism he speaks with in interviews is underlined by an unwavering determination and uncompromising high standards.

“My ambition and desire to succeed are the same as they have always been. Jason and myself have not come back to settle for second best,” he explains. “We want to push on and try to bring success to Bournemouth. That is our only focus at the moment and it will never change.”

The next visitors to the Goldsands Stadium will be Bolton, who arrive in four weeks’ time on Saturday 2nd November for their first visit to Bournemouth for more than a decade. While the Cherries and Trotters were frequent opponents in the third tier in the 1980s and early 1990s, they have not met since Bolton ran out 2-1 winners in April 1993. Boss Dougie Freedman recently signed ex-Bournemouth winger Liam Feeney on a three-month loan from today’s visitors Millwall, while also capturing Leicester midfielder Neil Danns for a similar spell, and Cardiff defender Kevin McNaughton for a month. However, Freedman has lost full-back Marc Tierney to a broken bone in his right foot, and the defender joins Mark Davies, Stuart Holden and Joe Riley on the long-term injured list.

McCLAREN REPLACES CLOUGH AT DERBY

Derby announced after last weekend’s defeat at local rivals Nottingham Forest that manager Nigel Clough had been sacked after more than four-and-a-half

years in the job, a spell which ended with three defeats in eight days. “After much consideration, the board feel it is time to move Derby County forward to the next level,” the club announced in a statement. Less than 48 hours later, Steve McClaren was unveiled as Clough’s replacement, following a spell working under Harry Redknapp at QPR. The former England boss has been named as “head coach” and will work alongside a technical sporting director (yet to be appointed) as the Rams restructure their staff. McClaren made 25 appearances for Derby as a player in the 1980s, and had a spell as Jim Smith’s assistant there in the 1990s before joining Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United. His backroom staff at Pride Park will include ex-Rochdale, Carlisle, Preston, Shrewsbury, Stockport and Northwich boss Paul Simpson, who is another ex-Derby player, and former Manchester United goalkeeping coach Eric Steele. Rams midfielder Paul Coutts is facing four months on the sidelines with a knee injury, while they have signed Leicester defender Zak Whitbread on a three-month loan.

Barnsley have signed England international goalkeeper Jack Butland on a three-month loan deal from Stoke. The 20-year-old moved from Birmingham to Stoke for £3.5m last January, but spent the rest of last season back on loan with the Blues, and is awaiting his competitive debut for the Potters. Butland was also Great Britain’s goalkeeper at last summer’s London Olympics, and he has been joined at Oakwell by fellow loanee David Fox, a midfielder from Norwich City who has also arrived on a three-month loan. Fox, 29, began his career at Manchester United but never featured in the first team at Old Trafford and has since played for Shrewsbury, Blackpool and Colchester before joining Norwich in 2010.

Despite losing coach Steve McClaren to Derby (see above), Queens Park Rangers manager Harry Redknapp has bolstered his injury-hit forward line – currently lacking Bobby Zamora and Andy Johnson – by signing Uruguay international striker Javier Chevanton on a short-term deal. A WEEK IN THE LIFE JOSH KAYE


MONDAY

This morning I had a ‘prehab’ session, designed to prevent injury, in the gym with the other youth team lads, before I was informed that I would be training with the development squad. I drove five of us over to Canford Arena where we took part in a session led by Neil Moss in aid of his outfield UEFA B coaching badge.

It is great to learn from people like Stephen Purches and Neil Moss. As a boy I grew up watching these players from the stands and the information they pass on to us is invaluable. The main messages they taught us today were about working as a team and staying calm on the ball.

I had lunch at Chapel Gate with the other members of the youth team, before we drove back to the Goldsands for our education. I quickly squeezed in a 15 minute photoshoot on the training pitches for my article in the programme, and managed to get to the lesson before it was in full swing.

Tomorrow, Stephen Purches is managing a development side that will be hosting Plymouth in the under-21 Premier League cup. I’ve been informed that I will be involved in some capacity, so tonight is about making sure I get enough sleep and

preparing myself properly for a potential match.

TUESDAY

Today I was named on the bench with a number of other youth team members who are making the step up. It was always going to be difficult because Plymouth had a few first team players in their team, and we did well to equalise after going behind. We went down to ten men just before half time and they scored from the resulting free-kick.

Purchy said we played well during the second half but unfortunately Plymouth made their advantage count and we lost 2-1. I didn’t get on but it was great to be involved in a competitive game at the Goldsands Stadium.

WEDNESDAY

Because the rest of the youth team had a tough session on Tuesday, we just had education today. We were in for two hours in the afternoon and learnt about organisation and communication.

In the evening I went to a friend’s house and caught up with some guys that I used to go to school with. It’s really tough to stay in contact with all my friends who have stayed on in education and

it is one of the downsides of trying to forge a career in football. You miss out on a lot of socialising in and around school and also can miss out on things that have been planned. I make sure I stay in contact with them and meet up on a regular basis.

THURSDAY

We had a gym session this morning where we learnt a variety of different exercises to condition us for physical performance. We then headed to Chapel Gate for an intense coaching session. We had some extra lads involved on day release from their schools, so this meant we were able to play some 11 versus 11 games, which was good fun. After some lunch together as a group, we all went our separate ways and I drove home to Verwood.

I was awarded the youth team captaincy this season, which is something that I am very proud of. I am one of the biggest talkers on the pitch so Shaun Brooks and Paul Groves felt I was the right man for the job. Wearing the captain’s armband has been a responsibility that I have thrived on as I love to keep the rest of the side focused and motivated, and I think it has helped raise my personal performances as well.

Friday is all about preparation for matchday. We have an injury prevention pre-hab session first thing before a proper session on the training pitch.

As a team we focused hard on our movement and counter-attacking, which is something we want to implement more during games. The session was relatively light in tempo, but stands us in good stead for tomorrow’s match against Hereford.

SATURDAY

On a matchday I get up at 7am and have scrambled egg on toast for breakfast, it is a habit that I have got into. I make sure I get a lot of water down me to keep me hydrated and by 9.30am the other lads and I are at

New Milton Town’s Fawcett’s Field, which is where we play our home matches.

We conceded first, but we showed real character to get back into the match. Joe Quigley and Kieran Roberts both scored to put us 2-1 up, but unfortunately we didn’t hold on and get the three points. In the last minute Hereford broke down the left and put in a deep cross that was headed in. We should have won the game if I am honest, and everyone was gutted to give away the lead.

After the warm down, myself and few other youth team members went to watch the first team take on Blackburn Rovers. The result was disappointing but it is always good for us to watch the senior squad play. It is exciting to see what we are all aiming for and what we aspire to be like every day.

SUNDAY

Today is a day of relaxation and another opportunity to catch up with the people that I can’t see due to football commitments. I’ll sometimes go and watch my friends play Sunday League football, which is always interesting! My friends have grown up with me in the Cherries Academy and are always there to support me when I need them, but this is my day to support them!

It can be frustrating that I can’t join in a kick-around, but at the end of the day I would never change the position I am in now. I feel very lucky to be involved in the set-up at AFC Bournemouth, and hope I can be here for many years to come.

DIRECTOR TO FLY THE CHERRIES FLAGDirector Alexey Panferov will be flying the Cherries flag in the inaugural Bournemouth Marathon tomorrow.

Panferov will take part in the 26.2 mile event and represent the Cherries with friend Andrey Dobrynin.

The Russian has already completed a host of endurance events across the globe in 2013, including two iron men competitions in Mexico and Spain and the Moscow marathon.

“When I found this marathon in the all-running-events calendar I realised I had no choice,” Alexey said. “It

“Being a club board member and having done more than a dozen hard endurance events in 2013 I thought I could make it on behalf of the AFC Bournemouth directors.

“Every time I come over here I do my morning one to one-and-a-half hour runs along the bay and it’s a real pleasure.

“Running out of the Haven Hotel towards the waking-up town makes me happy.

“I always meet the early kitesurfers working on their gear and many bikers and runners doing their morning workouts. It’s simply a great feeling.

WE’RE ON OUR WAY: THE CITY GROUND The Cherries’ first fixture following the international break is away to promotion contenders Nottingham Forest.Located next to the River Trent, the City Ground has been Forest’s home since 1893, witnessing some of the most memorable matches in the club’s history, including their memorable European cup nights.

Away supporters are now housed in one side of the Bridgford stand, towards the Brian Clough stand. The Cherries have initially been sent an allocation of 1,000 tickets but up to 2,000 supporters can be seated here, and both the atmosphere and views are good.

Most food and drink outlets around the ground are home supporters only, but the Stratford Haven and Nottingham Rowing Club are recommended and there is also a McDonalds further down the road. If travelling by train, there are a number of pubs and food outlets nearby, with the Waterfront complex

proving popular, as well as boasting a Wetherspoons.

The train station is just one mile, and a subsequent 20 minute walk, away from the ground. Exit the station at the main entrance, turn left and then left again before following the road down to the dual carriageway. Turn right and the ground is on the left, past Trent Bridge.

Alternatively, to reach the ground by car, leave the M1 at junction 24 and follow the signs to join the A453 towards Nottingham. After passing through Clifton, follow the signs for football and cricket traffic before joining the A52 eastbound towards Grantham. Carry straight on until you reach the Gamston Island and take the first exit on to the A6011 (Radcliffe Road).

Follow the road as it bends to the right and follow the signs for matchday parking.

Parking around the ground is limited, and the West Bridgford area has controlled parking zones and residents parking schemes enforced on a matchday. The club’s official car parks are car parks located at Victoria Embankment (£4 per car), Victoria Embankment (£4 per car), County Hall (£4 per car), Cattlemarker Pay and Display (£3 per car) and Lady Bay Sports Ground (£5 per car).

As ever the supporters’ coach, sponsored by afcb.vitalfootball.co.uk, is running and leaves the Goldsands Stadium at 9.30am. Spaces cost £22 per person for season ticket holders and £27 per person for non-season ticket holders.

Ever since Tokelo Rantie stepped foot on English soil following his record move from Swedish side Malmo, there have been reporters hot on his heels.

Be it a local newspaper or the South African national press, everyone wants a piece of the man that the Cherries fought so hard to lure to the south coast in the summer transfer window.

It is hard to imagine that just over five years ago, Rantie was just a teenager chasing not a career in football but a career in business – a path that is unlikely to have ever have brought him to where he is today.

“I did play football as a teenager, but I was just being there for the sake of being there because I was playing with my friends,” he explains. “I was spending most of my time studying more than playing football.

“My friends were going to trials, going for coaching and to academies, but I didn’t have time for that really.

“I was doing athletics at school and that was something I enjoyed so it was just me, running and studying.

“Unfortunately I didn’t have the money to go to university and that’s when I decided to try football, it was late, in 2008 and I was already 19. In August 2011 my professional career started.”

Getting his break with the Stars of Africa Academy, Rantie went on to play for

Ferroviario de Beira and CD Maxaquene in Mozambique, before moving to Sweden where he represented IFK Hassleholm and Malmo.

It has been a whirlwind journey for the forward to get to the south coast, and one that he says hasn’t always been easy.

“Everything happened so quickly, because I am a hard worker. I grew up knowing that if you want something you have to actually put more effort in and you always have to impress people everywhere you go - even your enemies.

“It’s easier for me now to go and start life anywhere because I left home young.

starting to want me to do things for the community and I’m happy to help because I believe there are a lot of people who are better than me where I’m coming from.

“They just need that opportunity because I went through a lot to be here.”

Born into a tight-knit family in Parys in the heart of South Africa, Rantie has two sisters and a mother, who is seriously ill.

And astute in his assessment of his rise to the top and those around him, despite football taking him across two continents and on to the international stage already,

I was 14 when I went for trials at the academy.

“I didn’t make it so I went to stay with my aunt in Eastern Cape.

“In 2008 I moved to Johannesburg and since then I haven’t been home, I haven’t spent my birthday at home and I haven’t been there when someone is celebrating their birthday. It is hard but I am used to it.

“Being here now is actually opening a lot of doors for me. People at home are

“Some of the decisions I took were tough because I was still young, I left home and there was no one supporting me, I was there on my own so I don’t want to be in the spotlight because I’m reserved.

“I don’t want to feel superior - I’m always keeping it cool. I don’t want to be famous. Unfortunately I’m playing football so I will be but I’m trying my best not to be.

“I don’t have any friends here - even in Sweden I didn’t have any except my team mates. I believe by keeping it that way it makes everything easier for me.

“All my friends don’t play football, it’s just me, my family and a little bunch of friends.

“I don’t want to expand it because it might lead me to do other things outside football that will disturb my career and so far God has been blessing me, it’s been going from strength to strength, and I don’t want anything to disrupt that.

“A lot of people I have met have tried to be friends with me, but I am blessed because I can see the personality of a person by just looking at them. I can tell if a person is good or not.

“I can see that a lot of people are not with me because of the person I am, they maybe want to brag to their friends something about me and I don’t want that.”

But despite missing those closest to him, there is one man on the south coast who has clearly won Rantie over.

“I’ve been under a lot of coaches but Eddie’s personality is similar to Ricard (Norling, head coach of Malmo),” he explains.

“They are not coaches who shout at players but they give you the effects. Those are the types of things that make a player want to do well for them.

“They are both ambitious and young, and I’m used to working with young coaches. It’s good because they understand the modern game and are willing to assist players because they are learning too.

“To be honest, I’m not saying this to make a good statement, but Eddie is one of the best coaches I have worked under. I have been here for a very short time but already I can see that he is willing to do anything for you.

“He’s one of those coaches who just comes to the players and asks ‘did you sleep well?’, ‘did you eat well?’, ‘did you talk to your family?’. Those are the types of things that show that he’s not only focusing on football and that he is checking on life in general.

“It’s a good thing, and he makes jokes as well, so it’s fun,” he adds.

“People say that some things are impossible but I believe they are possible. They are the things that make me want to do

And whilst his life may still be in a period of transition, the striker, who is currently still looking for a permanent home in Dorset, believes that under Howe’s guidance he can shine.

“From where I have been and what I have seen of Bournemouth so far, it’s cool. It’s not too much and not too little and will suit the style of life I live.

“Everyone at the club is always talking to me, everyone wants to ask questions and if I have something to ask, they are always willing to help.

“It feels like I’ve been here for a year already because of them, they always try and make

well whenever I play, because maybe when I am playing someone will be watching, maybe something will happen or maybe I will get something, so I always try my best.

“God always has a plan for me and I believe that he knows my dreams and I don’t think he would bring me here just to waste my time. I think he brought me here because he’s seen the team is ambitious, so it’s a good thing and I’m happy to be here.”

Today’s match will be a fierce contest of skill and determination on the pitch, with the added spice of noise and fervent support in the stands.Millwall are in town this afternoon and they are certain to bring a passionate group of fans with them who will turn up the volume in the Goldsands to often deafening levels. The result of this match will ultimately be decided by the managers and the players, but as fans we can all play a key role today in determining the outcome.

One of my first away trips with the Cherries was in 2006 when we visited today’s opponents at The Den with both teams plying their trade in League One. It was a fairly forgettable 1-0 reverse but the one memory which remains is the Millwall fans roaring in unison at the away fans, with no real regard for what was transpiring on the pitch.

This isn’t to say it was threatening, but it made for an intimidating atmosphere, which perhaps played some part in the defeat, as the away fans were unable to make their voices heard to Kevin Bond’s team on the pitch.

As our stadium has developed, featuring a consistently large crowd, there has been a noticeably sharp rise in volume on matchdays which has been fantastic to behold. The new stand has made a real difference to the noise level, not only due to the increased

attendance figures but also because it traps the sound inside the stadium. Today should be no different and we have the numbers and passion in the crowds to make more noise than the visitors and really get behind Eddie and the team.

There is a great pre-game atmosphere here and the volume, especially from the Steve Fletcher stand, when the players are in the tunnel must fill them with belief in themselves and pride in the badge they wear.

It’s always vital to stick behind the players, whether they are winning or losing. Last week’s disappointing result against Blackburn was an example of the spirit of the club as a whole. Even at 0-3 down and with Richard Hughes sent off early in the second half, the crowd did not give up hope and got right behind Eddie and the boys, even though it was clearly an uncharacteristically shaky performance. The players who remained on the pitch responded with fantastic determination and professionalism, demonstrating a battling attitude which saw us pull back a goal through the ever-impressive Ryan Fraser and create a host of chances which would have given Blackburn some unexpected jitters following their dominant first half shift.

Down to ten men again in mid-week at Elland Road, the team showed they had the guts to fight back from a goal down

and came close to securing a draw, with the players recognising the excellent support of the travelling fans.

So whatever is happening out there today, let’s make some noise. Support Eddie, Jason and the players and hopefully take home the three points and begin to turn the Goldsands into the fortress of last season. We won’t be meeting Millwall in the Championship again until the final day, by which time we will have seen plenty of highs and lows for our club. Hopefully our fans will attend The Den in droves on that that day, proud of what our club has achieved this season.

I’ll be at today’s game with my dad as usual, who is celebrating his birthday tomorrow. A win today is sure to put the cherry on top of his cake. Enjoy the game and make some noise for the boys.

AFC BOURNEMOUTH COMMUNITY SPORTS TRUST

A team made up of players on the Trust’s new education and football programme pushed the Sky Blues all the way in an enthralling game at Cuthbury earlier this month.

The course, which started in September, allows students to study sports related level one, two or three diplomas while representing the club in regular and competitive fixtures.

Premier League sides Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur are also signed up to the competition along with a host of other tops clubs who have successfully run the programme in the past.

Students will study and develop their skills at the Goldsands Stadium, using the club’s facilities and learning from experienced staff.

They will also gain experience by coaching in the community and carrying out match day duties at the Cherries’ Championship home fixtures.

Head of the Community Sports Trust Steve Cuss said, “This is a programme we are really excited about and one we believe will be popular.

“It gives students the chance to use their passion for football to further their skills and still play regularly at the same time.

“Working in the sports industry can be exciting and rewarding, and this is one of the best places to start a career in the field.

The AFC Bournemouth National Elite College Football League side became the latest team to represent the club when they started their season with a narrow defeat to Coventry City.

“We are already taking applications for the next academic year and strongly encourage anyone who is interested to get in touch.”

INTRODUCING JACK COLLISONMatchday meets on loan midfielder Jack Collison, who is set to add a touch of Premier League class to the Cherries squad when he makes his home debut this afternoon.

As the referee blew the full time whistle and the supporters headed for the exits at Elland Road, there was plenty for the Cherries fans to discuss on the long journey home from Leeds on Tuesday night.

They had seen their team denied a deserved point when Dominic Poleon struck ten minutes from time in a game that had plenty of talking points. Ryan Allsop was sent off in the first half, Eddie Howe’s team then rallied with ten men and the travelling contingent got their first glimpse of Jack Collison in a red and black shirt.

The Wales international was neat and tidy in possession, while he showed the deft touches and intelligent distribution that marked him out as a Premier League player as the Cherries and Leeds met for the first time in five years.

With Richard Hughes suspended and Harry Arter and Shaun MacDonald injured, Collison’s arrival was a welcome boost and the former Hammers young player of the year was equally excited about the opportunity to play first team football.

“I signed the papers at the West Ham training ground in the morning and then it was a race against the clock to get to Leeds,” he said. “There were a few train changes but I managed to get there just in time to grab a bit of food, meet the boys and get out there for the game.

“I wasn’t on the bench for West Ham at the weekend and the opportunity to come here arose. It’s a fantastic club, which is on the up, and hopefully I can help them and they can help me.

“I haven’t been involved as much as I would have liked (at West Ham), so it’s a good opportunity for me to come here and show what I can do.”

The challenging circumstances surrounding Collison’s debut weren’t lost on Howe and he believes the midfielder will prove to be a valuable addition to the squad.

“I thought he was outstanding,” he explained. “He was a real driving force for us in midfield and we’re excited to have him, albeit for only a short period of time.”

The Cherries mark their second trip to the midlands in seven days as they travel to the King Power Stadium on 26th October.Just a week after Eddie Howe’s men face Nottingham Forest in their first match following the international break, they make the journey to one of last year’s losing play-off semi-finalists’ Leicester City.

The Foxes’ King Power Stadium is an impressive arena. Being built in 2002 just minutes away from their previous Filbert Street home, not only has it undergone sponsorship and name changes in the past few years but also major renovation work. Boasting a capacity of 32,500, the sides are enclosed, with the design structure also meaning the club would be able to add an additional tier above if demand required, and as a result the acoustics are good.

Up to 3,000 travelling supporters can be seated in the away end in the north east corner. Here, views are good despite being well back from the pitch. However the noise able to be generated is

Western Boulevard and you will see King Power Stadium on your right-hand side.

Supporters travelling by car are also advised that there are improvement works currently going on at junction 21 of the M1 and so to expect delays.

There is no on-site parking for away supporters on matchdays, however the parking on Freemans Common Business Park is on individual business car parks. The parks are run in aid of the Multiple Sclerosis (MS!) Therapy Centre. Parking is £3 or £4 depending on the location and all proceeds go to the charity.

There is also further parking available in the city centre and this is signposted on the approach roads.

The train station is a five minute drive or a 20 minute walk from the ground, with the majority of supporters choosing to walk, whilst the Cherries supporters coach sponsored by afcb.vitalfootball.co.uk is also running. The coach leaves the Goldsands Stadium at 10.00am, and spaces cost £19 per person for season ticket holders and £24 per person for non-season ticket holders.

If travelling to the match by car, exit the M1 at junction 21 before following signs for the city centre via the A5460. After three miles turn right on to Upperton Road, follow the road down until you get to the Liberty Statue island and take the fifth exit down

Two youngsters will today mark the start of their Cherries careers as they sign for the academy.

Lee Brad-Fletcher will sign for the under-11s, whilst Owen Bevan will sign for the under-10s.

Brad-Fletcher is described as a very technically good player, with good use of skill on the ball to beat a player in one against one situations, whilst Bevan has good technical ability and loves to run forward with the ball from defence or midfield.

DID THE DEFINING MOMENTS FROM BOTH THE GREAT ESCAPE MARK II AND SUBSEQUENT PROMOTION SEASON TRANSPIRE WEARING THIS SHIRT? GARETH DAVIES THINKS SO…

SHIRT TALESThe 2008/09 and 2009/10 seasons saw Cherries fans experience highs, lows and everything sandwiched between those two contrasting emotions, as the team had three managers, nearly went out of the Football League and then managed to win promotion back to League One. Talk about roller coaster!

Post administration, in the summer of 2008, the club’s then owners Sport 6 agreed a kit deal with high street chain JD Sports. It was triumphed by newly appointed chief executive Alistair Saverimutto as the biggest kit deal in the club’s history. The in-house deal with Bourne Red had become null and void after administration so JD Sports, under their Carbrini Sportswear brand, would make and sponsor the Cherries kits for an initial three years. The agreement was extended in 2011 and is still in place now, but now with Fila as suppliers.

Although their first set of kits weren’t exactly traditional, they were pleasant on the eye with the away shirt the best of the three. It was predominately black with red piping on the shoulders and under both arms. White also made an appearance - albeit a discreet one – on the edge of the sleeves and main body of the shirt. The Cherries crest was centrally positioned for the first time since the Great Escape mark I – perhaps that was a good omen from the kit makers! Their branding appeared above the badge and below it too and they

weren’t identical either which was a sensible touch. The JD logo was neatly positioned below the player’s number and it was the first time we had ever seen a sponsor on the back of a Bournemouth shirt.

The season 2008/09 started with a -17 points deduction and the first outing for the new away shirt was in the second game as a point was gained from the short trip to Aldershot. This would be the only time a team managed by Kevin Bond wore it as he was sacked at the start of September to be replaced by Jimmy Quinn, with Jason Tindall as his assistant. Quinn’s time in charge was as forgettable as Bond’s – just think Morecambe at home or Blyth Spartans – and he was gone, as 2008 became 2009, to be replaced by Eddie Howe with Tindall staying as assistant.

Over the next 18 months I believe some of the key moments that meant avoiding relegation and winning promotion happened whilst this shirt was being worn. I think I have the evidence to back it up as well, although Howe’s first two games in charge were both away from home, both defeats and both wearing this shirt, so things didn’t get off to the best of starts!

To me, the turning point for staying up, was at the intriguingly named London Borough of Barking & Dagenham Stadium, where Mark Molseley etched his name into Cherries folklore with a

last minute winner against Dagenham in a game we didn’t deserve to win but did, wearing this shirt. Steve Fletcher made his 500th League appearance that cold February night and suddenly we believed.

Further proof that we would stay up came from St James’ Park, Exeter in March, where Brett Pitman scored twice in a 3-1 defeat of the Grecians. One of his strikes is up there with Moulden’s chip and Macdougall’s header as best Cherries goal ever. Shirt worn that evening? Black away.

Of course relegation was avoided and then the next season we somehow won promotion to League One. Two matches stick out in my mind as catalysts for the elevation and they were both away from home in the space of four days in late January and early February. You don’t need me to tell you which shirt we were wearing, as I think it’s obvious, but the wins over Crewe and Rotherham were extremely pivotal.

So although the design of this shirt didn’t really make it stand head and shoulders above anything we had ever worn before, the important events of two seasons whilst wearing it thrusts it firmly into the forefront of supporters’ minds when thinking about iconic Cherries shirts of recent times.
