Off the top, but a long way to goIt was a most pleasing to start of the new season with two wins from twogames. The team worked hard at Novelda last Sunday, but it seems theMagdalena is our bogie ground, as we have never won there. What is not sopleasing is the volume of cautions and dismissals that have accompanied allour games to date. There is little point in blaming the officials, who have atough enough job on their hands, so wemust look inwards and ask ourselveswhat it is that the club and individuals must do to improve this bad situation!Let's behonest. Playersandcoaching staff have to take responsibility for theirown actions. Trying 'win' a penalty by diving, kicking the ball away after thewhistle or remonstrating with officials about decisions that they have madeonly heightens the possibility of infuriating the man in charge. We alreadyhave a catalogue of infringements that should be eradicated from the playingrepertoire - immediately! This club is playing someattractive and entertainingfootball, so why spoil it with petulant behaviour! We have terrific fans whocheer and support the team with gusto and that also deserves respect.Yes, this club is ambitious and you will read elsewhere about exactingendeavours to host international "legends" matches, high profile concertsand a wide range of other events, designed to entertain and add to thedevelopmentofFCTorrevieja.Thecoachingstaffmust instil the rightmindsetinto all players, the youthful and the experienced and the team must learn toaccept injustices as part and parcel of the frailty of the game, knowing thatsometimes the rub of the green will be in our favour.Weall want to concentrate on the delight and pleasure of the skill and "magic"that we witness on the pitch. We want to see Burguillos battle his boots off ina competitive midfield. We want to gasp in awe at the touch, control andacceleration of the likes of Ernesto, Inarejos and Manu Amores, as well asthe well timed tackle from a committed defender or the spring heeledoutrageous save fromManolo. This iswhywecome; this iswhywecheer; thisis why we love this club.

WithOrihuela reinstated in 2B, that is one tough opponent less for us to worryabout. So let us focus of achieving that goal, whilst improving our disciplinaryrecordwithout lessening our determination to keepwinning. We knowwe cando this and hold heads high and give fans the successful team they deserve.

Tight at the TopOnly one point separates six clubs at the top of the table with also a total ofsix teams remaining unbeaten. Therewere 23 goals from the tenmatches, asLa Nucia sat out the weekend, with Orihuela going back to 2B.Elche led until the 80th minutes of their encounter with Gandia, thensuccumbed to two late strikes,Oscar netting the first andRaimonbagging thewinner on 85. Carlos had given the home side a lead on the half hour but thedismissal of Peral on the hour changed the course of the game. Gandiaremain unbeaten with two draws and a win.FranGámez booted home the opener for Acero as they got off themark at thethird time of asking, defeating Denia by three goals to nil. Oliva added asecond on 35minutes for a 2-0 interval lead. The second half was listlesswithlittle or no positivity from the visitors who allowedOliva to double his personaltally in injury time.300 fans watched a tense tussle on a poor pitch at Burriana and had little tosmile about in a goalless first half. Saguntino drew first blood from a corneron 58 minutes and it looked like a share of the spoils when the home sidelevelled through an Emilio shot on 72. However, in injury time Borja noddedhome from another corner to give Saguntino their first win of 2012/13.

Villarreal C remain undefeated after this 1-1 draw at Ribarroja, nownumbering one win and two draws from their opening trio of matches. It wasRomanian Florin Andone who put them ahead on 13 minutes only to seeAlberto Pomer make it all square on 25. The Yellow Submarine had shoutsfor a penalty on 70, but the refereewasnot interested, so a share of the spoilsthe end result. The champions Catarroja and last year's play off side Alzira met at theMundial 82 neither having a point to their names after two games. It was thevisitors who bagged all three points with a 2-0 win, leaving last season'schampions floundering at the bottom of the table as the only club without apoint. That is three consecutive victories in the league for Alzira at Catarroja, who are sorely missing the leadership of John Clarkson.Llosa beat the drop last term mainly due to a Castellon protest, refusing toplay that fixture, but are pace setters this time round after their 1-0 win overthe same side. It was a single goal that did the trick and Llosa are joint top on7 points with twowins and a draw, yet to concede a goal. La Nucia is the onlyother side to boast a clean sheet, but that after two games as their fixturewithOrihuela was scrapped after Orihuela won their battle to be reinstated indivision 2B. All matches against them are thus null and void, with one teamhaving a "holiday" each weekend from now on.Crevillente and Jove usually enjoy a battle royale as relatively closeneighbours and this match went to Jove with the only goal of the game fromGuerro on 56minutes, in amatch best forgotten. Jove, with twowins are oneof the leading sextet at this early stage. Muro hosted Eldense at La Llometalooking to bounce back from their defeat at Novelda last week. They are atoughact to beat at homeandduly entertained fanswinning a five goal thriller3-2. Twice Eldense lead with Muro equalising for a second time in the 90thminute, then popping home the winner on 94.Utiel are one of the final pace setters in group six with two wins and a drawand only conceding that one late goal at Catarroja on the opening day. A winhere at Borriol by 2-0 forced a first defeat of the season on the hosts and setsthemup for anenjoyable return to third division football. A penalty conversionjust before half time from Victor Cardona was supplemented by a goal justafter the interval from Prieto landed the spoils.

Today's Visitors: Muro Club de Fútbol:Today's VisitorsName: Muro Club de FútbolCity: Muro de Alcoy (Alicante)::Founded in : 1930Presidente: Marcos CascantSocios: 300 :Budget : 210,000Muro is a very small town with apopulation of less than 9000,but despite this size, made areal impact in their very firstseason in the National Spanishfootball league last term, finishing in third place and

contesting the play off matches for 2B.They did so, in no small measure by beating FC Torrevieja home andaway in the league. That smarts a lot in this neck of the woods, as theywere the only side to strip six points off the Salineros in a season thathad it been theotherway round, wouldhaveseenTorrycontest theplayoff matches! That is now consigned to history and it is today's match and result thatis all important. There is no doubt that Muro will come here expectantand not want to return empty handed. Whilst wishing them a great dayout, that is precisely what we hope will be the outcome! This season they kicked off with an emphatic 2-0 defeat of fanciedAlzira (also in the play offs in the summer), then lost 1-0 toNovelda andclearly will be focussed on going one better and scaling the heights of2B football next year. They have strengthened their already capablesquad during the summer, notably signing 24 year old 2B playerNavarro from Ontinyent.

Fútbol Club Torrevieja: Player ProfilesLike another one of our new recruitsJosemi, Cuco Ros played for MarMenor last season and plys his skillsin the centre of the park, seeking outthe telling passes that can splitdefences and create the goalopportunities. He bagged 8 goalslast term for Mar Menor and netted14 the season before for CartagenaB, so it is to be hoped that he willcontinue in the same vein and add ahealthy number to the promotion

cause this time round for Torry. CucoRos turned 23 in March, so should still

have his best years ahead of him.

The muscular Abel is a rock at theback and demonstrated hispowerhouse qualities most notablyin the latter half of last term, fillingin most creditably at centre halfafter the departure of DiegoMeijide. He is always a threat fromset pieces and although now in histhirties and not as quick as he oncewas, he has the experience tooutfox most attackers in thisdivision. The 32 year old was bornin Torrevieja and other thanCalasparra in 2006, only plays forteam whose name begins with T –Torrellano, Thader and of courseTorrevieja!

Asearly as the firstminute LuisCarlos had the crowdon their feetwhenbringing out a terrific one handed save from the Crevillentekeeper,Víctor Sanz. It had been delightful and intricate interplaybetween Burguillos, Ernesto and the flying winger, giving fans amouthwatering appetiser of what was in store. This quick passing, fastthinking Torry side are making many new friends and it is impossiblenot to appreciate the skill and fighting spirit that exists within the squad. It was no surprise to seeTorry seize the initiative, as they forageddownboth flanks, Luis Carlos on the right and Inarejos doing similar damageon the left. Crevillente were twisted inside out and had to resort to shirtpulling and more physical indiscretions just to try and stem the tidalwaveof theSaltmen. Itwas inevitable that their barrierswerebreachedas on 16 minutes Ernesto teased a free kick into the danger area andJorge met it with authority, planting it into the net for the opener. Theflood gates would surely now open and frank my worth as a pundit, when only hours earlier on TKO Gold radio, had predicted a 6-0thumping for the visitors!I had doubted the wisdom of such bullish prognostication when Rafaonly hit the upright after sterling wing work by Inarejos, who jigged tothe goal line and served it up on a plate for the young central defender. That doubt resurfaced on 21 minutes when the man with diamonds onthe soles of his boots, Ernesto, missed form the penalty shot. In allfairness, Víctor Sanz pulled off a super save, but nonetheless, at theVicente Garcia we expect penalties to be buried in the net - especiallywhen we are having them! Burguillos had won the spot kick with athoroughly enterprising run through the heart of the Crevillentedefence, only being halted by a cynical hand ball. Put a special eye onthe Torry number 18, as he was brilliant up at Acero and again for mein this match worked his socks off, breaking up Crevillente attacks andsurging forward to put the fear into the opposition. This could well bethe season that he proves himself a cut above third division football.

Match Report: Day 2FC Torrevieja 2:1 Crevillente

21

Inarejos had been the first to see yellow with a third minute caution forsimulation when going down in the box. Trainer Gines then saw redafter he protested vehemently about a forearm smash on Vicente Boixright under theTorrydugout. Jorgecollected thenextTorry cautionandfor a second I thought the official might upgrade this to a red, as Jorgeflailed his arms about in a disrespectful message of disagreement atthe decision.Inarejos was making some pulsating runs from his own half, worryingthe life out of Tomás, who decided the best form of coping with thespeedy winger was to use a couple of his old wrestling moves. He gotaway with the first body check, but his second exact copy move wasgreeted with a straight red.Rafa had been penalised and cautioned in the 35th minute for whatappeared a rather innocuous challenge, then paid the penalty fiveminutes after the restart, when knocking the ball away after the visitorshad been awarded a free kick the ref dismissed Rafa for this secondoffence. It was tough on the lad, but it is essential that the players startunderstanding the workings of the minds of the demented, derangedand duly damaged doughnuts known as football referees and not doanything that allows them to exact spiteful revenge!

22

Just after the hour mark "diamond soled" Ernesto brought one of hisgems into play. Taking Sanz completely by surprise, he fired a terrificsnapshot into the roof of thenet via theundersideof the crossbar.Sanzlooked bewildered and did a tour of the upright to try and communicateto his teammates that he expected the ball to go wide. Come on Sanz,it was Ernesto who took the shot, not Darrylldinho! It was disappointingto see Carrasco sneak one in the other end from a corner which waspoorly defended and even more frustrating to see Torry squanderanother penalty kick when this time Inarejos failed to find the back ofthe net from twelve yards, Sanz making a fine diving save to his right.Luis Ortiz made an industrial if not agricultural challenge on Burguillosand was duly dismissed on 85 minutes a little before the Torry secondpenalty miss, but by then my six nil forecast looked like the whimsicalwitterings of a half wit (when were they never so?). Vicente Boixcompleted the game with a caution, this now being an issue the teammust seriously address, unless come October we are fielding thereserve side! On the bright side, it was two wins from two matches, something not one of the other 21 teams could boast!Jeff Scott

Hers's a few of the highest paid footballers in the world. The likes ofEto on €300,000 a week, will soon be joining them. One week'ssalary would run FC Torrevieja for the entire season! No. 1 David Beckham$46 million Age: 37 Team: Los Angeles Galaxy. Country: EnglandMr. Goldenballs himself! After winning his first MLS cup with the Galaxy inNovember 2011, Beckham re-signed for two more years with the LosAngeles team, turning down a more lucrative deal with the French clubParis-St. Germain. But he saved the bigger shocker for his Super Bowlcommercial where he stripped down to his boxer briefs for his new line ofH&M underwear. That body and new deal along with others from lifelongsponsor Adidas, Samsung, Coty and his latest, Burger King, not onlymake him the highest earning soccer player but one of the highest earningathletes in the world.

No. 2 Cristiano Ronaldo$42 million Age: 27 Team: Real Madrid Country: PortugalWith over 8.4 million followers on Twitter and 42.2 million fans onFacebook, Ronaldo is the most socially engaged athlete online. Hispopularity has translated into big bucks to the tune of $21 million fromsponsors like Nike, Castrol, and Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer, all ofwhich he promotes through his social media accounts. His impressiveperformance on the pitch commands a salary and bonus, including a50-50 share of his image rights, of another $21 million. The Real Madridstriker is a goal machine and last March became the fastest La Liga playerto score 100 goals in the league.

No. 3 Lionel Messi$39 million Age: 24 Team: Barcelona Country: ArgentinaVoted theworld's best player three years in a row is shattering records left andright this year. In March he became the first player to score five goals in aChampions League game and followed it up two weeks later by breakingBarca's all-time scoring record. His endorsement potential finally reflects hison-the pitch potential. His major sponsors Adidas, Pepsi, EA Sports areamong a larger portfolio paying him $19 million on top of his $20 million insalary and bonus.

They earn how much!

25

No. 4 Wayne Rooney$24 million Age: 26 Team: Manchester United Country: EnglandDespite courting controversy on the field and off it, Rooney's popularityremains undiminished. Proof: he had the most popular selling jersey inthe Premier League last season. While Coca-Cola let his contract lapselast year, his sponsors like Nike and EA Sports still heavily promote him.A new 5-year playing contract signed in October 2010 also gives him oneof the highest salary and bonus structures in the sport.No. 5 Kaka$21 million Age: 30 Team: Real Madrid Country: BrazilWhile recent news of him being left off of Brazil's preliminary Olympicsquad suggests he is past his peak, the 30-year young Kaka (a nicknamefor the man born Ricardo Izecson dos Santos Leite) has displayed areturn to the world-class form he was known for prior to knee surgery inAugust 2010. His unwavering clean cut image has kept him in goodfavour with sponsors like Adidas and EA Sports too.No. 6 John Terry$18 million Age: 31 Team: Chelsea Country: EnglandIt's a good thing the Blues' star defender can rely on a contract thatwill pay him a hefty $12 million a year salary through the 2013-14season. His endorsement money may be drying up. For the secondtime in two years, Terry was stripped of the captaincy of England'snational team for serious indiscretions.No. 7 Yaya Toure $18 millionAge: 28 Team: Manchester City Country: Ivory CoastThe midfielder joined City in July 2010 in part to be with his olderbrother, Kolo. The five-year contract that pays him over $15 milliona year, making him one of the highest paid in the Premier League, surely played an equal part. Last season his career high 13 goalsand 7 assists in all competitions helped him earn the award ofAfrican Player of the Year 2011. He also signed an endorsementdeal with Puma that includes distributing the brand's gear tounderprivileged African children.

Can you work it out?Do you know the single fact that links these show biz stars andfamous people? Maybe you're familiar with their work, or perhapsthey simply don't "do it for you".Born in the Big Apple in 1952 (yes, he's sixty) and has had a stringof hit films, including his recent success as The Wrestler. Thoughmost may best remember him for the sexy scenes with KimBasinger in Nine and a half weeks! Or maybe we just rememberKim Basinger!Another famous New Yorker, this time born in 1924 who enjoyedfilm fame with Humphrey Bogart. "You know how to whistle, don'tyou Steve, you just put your lips together and blow" is one her herfamous lines from To Have and Have Not. Whistle? I nearly blewmy top at the scene! He rounds up our trio of New York born actors (oh, have I given itaway?). We all must remember his shabby raincoat (think I mayhave inherited it) when he played the not so dumb DetectiveColumbo. Peter had an eye removed when he was only three yearsold due to cancer - his right eye, for those of you who need to knowthese things, before becoming one of TV's best loved characters.Happy BirthdaySo, it isn't the fact that they are all New Yorkers, though that isundeniably a link. Well, let me give it away by saying a very happybirthday to you if it is your birthday today - 16 September. If it is, youshare it with these three famous actors. I'll drink to that! If that isn'tenough, you could also share in the festivities with singers KatieMelua, BB King or magician David Copperfield.

Heard on the 'Today' programme on Radio 4Right at the end of a programme recently, there was a discussionabout the obscene cost of entry into Premiership football games –ʻthe cheapest price of £60 and £100 per game is not uncommonʼ.An older chap being interviewed said he could recall many yearsago arriving at the turnstiles, (it was probably West Ham United orQueen's Park Rangers), to be told, "That will be 10 Quid Mate"."What!", the old chap said, "I could get a woman for that!"The guy on the turnstile retorted, "Not for 45 minutes each way youwouldn't, and a brass band in the Interval!"As the pips sounded on the hour, the presenter John Humphries, could be heard in the background in stitches.

Match Report: Day 3Novelda 1: 0 Torrevieja

Not for the first time Torry travelled to Novelda and failed to win. A penalty inthe dying moments of the first half decided the game, though the hosts didhave the ball in the back of the Torry net twice more but these were ruled outfor offsides. In the final analysis,Noveldadefendedwell, goalkeeperMarcanoproducing several excellent saves, Ricardo Cavas at the centre of theirdefence was superb and Torry just did not take their chances.I better not comment too much on Senor Reig who blew the whistle anddistributed fourteen yellow cards in a game where there was probably onlythree dodgy tackles. For the life of me I just cannot get to grips with thementality of the majority of officials at this level, who make a rod for their ownbacks, week in week out. Maybe they just like paperwork! Enough on thereferee!Torry play some attractive and effective football, making great use ofErnesto's ability to receive the ball, hold on to it and play quick, accuratepasses. He in turn understands just where Luis Carlos and Inarejos want itand duly delivers time and time again. In the first period there were severalinstances of slick interplay between these three, with Dani and Burguillosbattling away like terriers in the midfield to try and ensure that this trio couldwork their magic.Luis Carlos is proving a great signing. Not only is he fast on the ball, but heworks hard as well. He loves to cut in from the right on to his left foot, butNovelda were very much aware of this and mainly kept him wide and on hisright.Nevertheless, hemanaged threeshots on target andnormallywewouldhave expected at least one of these to record a score. Marcano denied himboth sides of the interval and despite his best efforts hewas unable to find theback of the net.Torry startedwithout a traditional left back, leaving Josemi on the bench, withRafa suspended. Instead Casimiro opted for Abel alongside Pedro withcaptain Jorge occupying the wide left position. I am not sure that this suitedJorge as he is very much a right footed player and now seems much more athome in the centre of the defence. It was he who committed the penaltyoffence and it was he who prevailed upon the referee to think again - cuesound of the Family Fortunes bad choice buzzer!

29

The spot kick was expertly despatched, rammed into the right hand corner ofthenetasManologuessedwronglyanddived theotherway.AssoonasTorrykicked off, the half time whistle went and all knew it would be tough turningaround even this slim deficit. There were no changes to the Torry line up atthe restart, as the manager believed his chosen eleven still up to the task athand.Ernesto continued to findCavasbreathing downhis neck at every pointand turn, though did manage to wriggle a path through on 52 minutes andsteer theball on tohis left peg.Thehardworkdone, theharderwork of findingthe back of the net was beyond him and a tame shot was easily gathered.Cuco Ros was delivering some tantalising crosses into the danger area fromset pieces but these were going begging. In one such instance he delivereddeep and whilst all missed it, Marcano in the Novelda could only parry it backinto onrushing Torry feet. Sadly all those feet could do was tamely nudge itback into his arms. Another glorious opportunity was spurned when Ernestoflashed a corner kick over and Jorge went as close as you can go withoutscoring. There was no reason why Torry could not salvage this match, however,Noveldawere troublesomegoing forwardwithCristianastrongandforceful striker who caused many anxious moments.Indeed Novelda did have the ball in the Torry net on twomore occasions, butbothwerenegatedby the linesman's flag, forwhichhewassubjected to dog'sabuse. The home fans were well aware of the quality and capability of thisvisiting outfit, so were extremely anxious that their team bagged a secondgoal - offside or otherwise! The sight of seriously old men out of their seatstrying to smash the linesman on the head with their walking sticks is not oneto take to bed on a full stomach! In the end, Torry had a man sent off for the third consecutive match, thoughwhy Pedro received a first caution is open to debate. The most likely answeris that he got this for leaving the field of play without the referee's permission,as he did get some spray on his injured back when the home team had aplayer on the ground receiving attention. Manu Amores was cautioned as hecameon as a substitute, so heaven knowswhat he did or said towarrant that.Maybe this referee just doesn't like small people - surely that can't be right!
