Writing – ‘ Build a Rocket for Baby Bear’ . Baby Bear really enjoyed his adventure to the moon. As a memory of his trip we would like you to make a rocket using small recyclable materials then write a list of instructions about how you made the rocket. (See rocket making activity description below). You can use the template attached or make up your own. Look on Seesaw to see how Mrs Quick did this.

Reading - Word Maze – can you find and read the words in the maze. Draw a circle around them or highlight them.

You can read for 10 minutes a day using the https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/for-home/find-a-book/library-page/#

Gowerton Primary School‘Adding and Subtracting!’

The objectives this week are to ensure children can: Read simple number sentences that use + and = signs and a - and = signs Say the number one more than and one less than any number up to 20 Add 2, 3 or 4 to a number up to 10 by counting on Subtract 2, 3 or 4 from a number up to 10 by counting back Begin to add to a number up to 20 by counting on Begin to subtract from a number up to 20 by counting back

Here are some activities you can try to practise these skills:

Jumping Maths – Resources: - chalk or a number line from 0-20Use a large number track on the floor or draw one on the ground. Choose a number from 2 to 18 and ask your child to stand on this number and say the number to you. Shout out ‘1 more’ or ‘1 less’ and your child has to say the correct number then move along the track to that number. Support by: using a 1−10 number track.Extend by: write additions and subtraction such as 6 + 1 = 7, 10 + 1 = 11, 9 − 1 = 8, 7 − 1 = 6, 14- 1= 13, 18 − 3 = 15 on cards. Your child takes a card, and ʻacts outʼ the calculation on the number track, e.g. if they take 7−1 = 6, they stand on 7, jump back 1 space to 6 and so on.

How many pennies in the tin? – Resources: - tin, selection of coins. Get a tin or money box and count in five pennies. How much is in the tin? Show me on your fingers. Drop in two more pennies, saying, six, seven. Now there are seven pennies in the tin. Write on a piece of paper 5 + 2 = 7Show me seven fingers. Drop two more pennies into the tin. Do this then ask children to put up two more fingers to show you the new total. Write on a piece of paper 7+ 2 = 9. Keep adding 2 or 3 pennies until you reach 20. Each time writing down the sum.

Counting on with Bears – (download the attached drawing of bears and print two copies then cut out or use small toys)Use a cardboard box to make a ʻcaveʼ (cut a hole in one side of the box). Start with ten bears outside the cave. These bears have been out hunting and now they are coming home to their cave. Count five bears into the cave. Now another two bears are coming home. Help children to count on: six, seven, as you move them into the cave. Ask your child to write the sum: 5 add 2 = 7. Lift up the ʻcaveʼ so that children can see the bears. Repeat, this time adding three more bears and so on. Extend to work with 20 bears.

Counting back with Bears Use the same cardboard box to make as the ʻcaveʼ.Show ten bears then put them into the cave. These bears have been asleep in their cave, but as they wake they are going to go out hunting for their dinner. Ask your child to put up ten fingers to match the bears in the cave. Take out two bears, one by one. Put down one finger for each, saying how many bears must be left in the cave, nine, eight. Lift up the ʻcaveʼ to check. Write the subtraction sum to go with this, 10-2=8. Now three more bears have woken up. Ask your child to show eight fingers, then take out three bears, and count backwards, 8-3=5. Lift up the cave again to check and ask your child to write the subtraction sum and so on. Extend by using 20 bears.

Look at the short video on Seesaw to see my rocket and instructions.

Use a large box to create an adventure story using the box as a stimulus – where will the box take you? What form of transport will the box be? Who will go with you?

On a night with a clear sky lie down in your garden and gaze at the stars. What do you see? Will you see a shooting star? Can you see any star formations? If you stay long enough you might see a shooting star. Can you see the moon? What does it look like? Can you see patterns and what colour is it? Would you like to travel to the moon in a rocket?
