Special Care for High-Risk Women and Newborns

Most women have normal pregnancies and deliver healthy babies. But some women have a higher risk of developing a problem during pregnancy or birth. You may require special care if you have a medical condition such as hypertension or diabetes, are expecting multiple births, or become pregnant after age 35.

Our team helps expectant moms navigate their individual situation to connect with the most appropriate resources, which may be available at one or both hospitals. Holy Cross Health offers the most advanced programs and care available for pregnant women at risk for preeclampsia, premature birth, multiple births, gestational diabetes and other conditions.

Under the direction of board-certified specialists in gynecology, obstetrics, perinatology, genetics and neonatology, our highly skilled team works with women every step of the way toward a healthy pregnancy and baby.

8

Perinatal Diagnostic Center at Holy Cross HospitalWomen with high-risk pregnancies are referred to our Perinatal Diagnostic

Center at Holy Cross Hospital for consultation, diagnostic testing and ongoing

care in collaboration with their obstetricians. The center is operated under the

direction of a board-certified perinatologist, who is a physician with specialized

training in expectant mothers and their babies. Diagnostic services include

biophysical profiles, amniocentesis, non-stress testing, obstetric ultrasound and

genetic counseling.

High-Risk Perinatal Center & Antepartum UnitWomen who require hospitalization during pregnancy can stay in our specialized

High-Risk Perinatal Center at Holy Cross Hospital or the Antepartum unit at

Holy Cross Germantown Hospital, where they receive expert care, 24 hours a

day. The units are supported by the expertise of board-certified obstetricians/

gynecologists, perinatologists and registered nurses certified in fetal monitoring.

Obstetricians are available 24 hours a day and a diabetes nurse specialist is

available at Holy Cross Hospital.

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Holy Cross HospitalHoly Cross Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) cares for more newborns with

complex medical issues than any other hospital in Maryland. Our 46-bed, Level III NICU

features state-of-the-art technology to care for babies who are born early or have medical

complications that require constant observation or care.

Our highly specialized team works collaboratively to provide comprehensive infant care. Our

team includes neonatologists (physicians who specialize in newborn care), neonatal nurse

practitioners, registered nurses, physical therapists, respiratory therapists, case managers,

lactation consultants and other specialists. Our team communicates with you and your

pediatrician to coordinate care and to make sure your baby has everything he or she needs

to thrive.

We encourage parents to visit their babies in the NICU frequently and participate in their

care. When parents are away from their babies, our NICVIEW system provides secure video

streaming over the Internet to bring comfort to NICU families. We support and encourage

breast-feeding and can help you begin. To ease the transition home, we offer a discharge

class, or individual education, CPR training and a support group.

Neonatal Unit at Holy Cross Germantown HospitalHoly Cross Germantown Hospital’s fully-equipped Level II Neonatal Unit is a newborn care

center for babies who are born up to two months early or who require being on a ventilator

for less than 24 hours. If a newborn requires more intensive care after the first 24 hours

following birth, parents have the option to have their baby transferred to the Holy Cross

Hospital NICU in Silver Spring.

Like all patient rooms at Holy Cross Germantown Hospital, the Neonatal Unit features all

private rooms for babies and their visiting family.

Your Newborn Checklist

During your first days at home with your baby, here is a checklist of important actions:

11

Childbirth and Parenting Education

Before Baby

Prenatal Tour of Holy Cross Hospital or Holy Cross Germantown Hospital We encourage expectant parents to take this complimentary tour about four to six weeks before the baby’s due date. Please register.

Childbirth Preparation This prepared childbirth course focuses on labor and delivery, medical routines, comfort measures and techniques, the role of the partner and more.

Childbirth — Just the Facts Designed for those who want a refresher course or cannot fit in a full series, this class covers the signs and process of labor, medical interventions, medications and pain management.

Comfort Measures for Labor Focuses on non-medical methods to cope with labor including relaxation, positioning, breathing techniques and massage. This class can be combined with Just the Facts, used as a supplement to a full prepared childbirth class, or used as a refresher class.

Becoming a new parent is a joyful experience. Still, there is a lot to learn. That is why Holy Cross Health offers classes to teach you and your family members what to expect during pregnancy, labor and delivery, as well as how to care for your newborn. Our class instructors are trained in childbirth education.

Online Childbirth Education Class An alternative for parents who cannot attend a traditional childbirth preparation class.

Cesarean Birth Provides an overview of the reasons and procedures of cesarean birth, the role of your partner, recovery and postpartum considerations.

Baby Care — Instructions for the First Weeks This course provides survival tips for baby’s first weeks, including bathing, feeding and more.

Getting Started with Breast-feeding This class will help expectant moms get off to a good start with breast-feeding.

Prenatal Exercise Designed for the expectant mother at any stage of pregnancy. Includes stretching, muscle toning and strength training, while incorporating cardiovascular work throughout.

Expectant moms participate in Holy Cross Health’s prenatal yoga class.

12

In the hospital:

Babies are most alert in the first hour of birth. Start breast-feeding as soon as possible, then keep the baby with you during your hospital stay.

Hold your baby skin to skin as much as possible, which has benefits for mom and baby.

Early breast milk, called colostrum, comes in small amounts. This “liquid gold” is all your baby needs for the first few days.

Remember that breast-feeding is learned by mom and baby through practice and patience.

A good latch and comfortable positioning are important; don’t hesitate to ask a nurse or lactation consultant for assistance.

Feeding the baby every two to three hours and around the clock will increase your milk supply. Night feedings are very important.

To know that baby is getting enough, keep track of feedings and diaper changes. Baby should have no food or drink other than mother’s milk unless medically indicated.

In general, it is best to avoid giving a pacifier until breast-feeding is well established. Pacifiers may be used briefly to comfort babies during procedures. Pumping is also not recommended in the first three to four weeks unless medically indicated.

Plan ahead:

Look for sources of support and gather information from trusted websites, books, articles, videos, other moms, or take a breast-feeding class (see page 12).

1 Set up a space for nursing at home. Find ways to save time and energy as you adjust to your new life in the early weeks. Start thinking about how you will manage breast-feeding/pumping if you are returning to work or school.

Visitor Guidelines

TriageDuring the triage (i.e., assessment) process at Holy Cross

Hospital or Holy Cross Germantown Hospital, you may have

one visitor with you in the patient care area. Other visitors may

wait in the labor and delivery waiting area. Children under the

age of 12 are not permitted in the patient care area of triage.

Labor, Delivery and Recovery (LDR) RoomsWhen you are admitted to an LDR, you may choose to have

up to four people (12 years and older) with you for your labor

and delivery including your support person. After birth, your

support person may bring family and friends into the LDR.

We recommend 10-minute visits to allow mother and baby

privacy and rest.

Cesarean BirthExpectant mothers may designate one adult support person

to be with them for the cesarean birth and in the Post

Anesthesia Care Unit after the cesarean birth.

Private SuitesOne adult support person who is at least 18 years old may

stay overnight with the mother in the suite using our sleep

sofa or sleep chair. Your newborn’s siblings and other family

and friends may visit. Siblings and visiting children must be

accompanied by an adult, other than the recovering mother,

at all times. Siblings, regardless of age, are not permitted to

spend the night.

High-Risk Perinatal Center & Antepartum UnitAt the High-Risk Perinatal Center at Holy Cross Hospital and

the Antepartum unit at Holy Cross Germantown Hospital,

one adult support person who is at least 18 years old may

stay overnight using our sleep sofa or sleep chair. Family and

friends may visit. Visiting children under age 18 must be

accompanied by an adult, other than the patient, at all times.

Children, regardless of age, are not permitted to spend the

night.

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) & Neonatal UnitAt the NICU at Holy Cross Hospital and the Neonatal Unit at

Holy Cross Germantown Hospital, parents are welcome to

visit anytime, except from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. and 6:30 to 7:30

p.m. during the change in nursing shifts. Three visitors are

permitted at a time and at least one must have the matching

infant identification band. Siblings over age 4 may visit with

a parent or banded person. Siblings under age 4 may visit by

special arrangement only.

Patients benefit greatly from the support of their loved ones. That’s why Holy Cross Hospital and Holy Cross Germantown Hospital embrace visiting policies that welcome your designated support person to remain by your side.

To best meet the patient’s needs, the medical and nursing staff makes exceptions for visiting based on the patient’s condition and any seasonal or public health restrictions in place at the time. Visit HolyCrossHealth.org for up-to-date visitor guidelines.

Visiting parents and all other visitors must check in at the information desk in the main lobby. Remind your visitors to wash their hands before touching the baby.

14

Be Prepared Before, During and After Childbirth

Timeline ofImportant Actions

Please complete this document and bring it with you to the hospital, along with your identification (ID) and your insurance card(s).

This checklist will help guide you through some pre- and post-delivery registration, financial and insurance requirements. Please review carefully and follow the instructions provided.

Weeks 10 – 36 of Your Pregnancy

@ Sign up for a free prenatal tour of Holy Cross Hospital or Holy Cross Germantown Hospital, and explore our affordable childbirth and parenting education classes at HolyCrossHealth.org, or by calling 301-754-8800.

@ Contact your medical insurance company or your employer’s benefit office to:

o Determine the process for adding your newborn(s) to your insurance coverage

o Notify your insurer of your pregnancy (if applicable)

o Inquire about your financial obligations to the hospital at the time of delivery, for you and your newborn(s)

Week 32 of Your Pregnancy

@ Pre-register for your baby’s birth at HolyCrossHealth.org/MaternityPreReg, or by calling 301-754-8300. This important step reduces the time you’ll spend registering at the hospital on your delivery day and helps with the insurance verification and pre-authorization process.

Before You are Discharged from the Hospital After Giving Birth

@ Be prepared to name your newborn(s) and complete both the Birth Certificate and Social Security application forms before leaving the hospital. This will save you trips to the Department of Vital Records in Baltimore and to your local Social Security administration office.

Within One Week of Your Baby’s Birth

@ Add your newborn(s) to your medical insurance plan. This step is critical to ensure coverage is obtained for your baby’s medical treatment. If medical insurance coverage isn’t obtained, the full financial obligation for medical treatments may be the responsibility of the parent(s) and/or guarantor.

Paying Your Medical BillAfter your medical services are documented, claims are submitted to your insurance company, and the final insurance payment is received, Holy Cross Health will then mail you a bill reflecting the balance you owe for medical services.
