MATH010 INTERMEDIATE ALGEBRA Course Syllabus

This document gives a detailed explanation of the course procedures and policies. You are responsible for all of this information, and should ask your instructor if anything

is unclear. Please feel free to come by my office when you need help.

RESOURCES Intermediate Algebra Units 1-5 course packet (Dale P. Hawkinson) *You will buy a Resources Card from the bookstore, and bring it to class or my office to receive your packet.

CALCULATOR You will need a calculator with exponential and logarithmic capabilities, typically designated as "scientific" and having some combination of y x , ^ , ln x and LN keys. A TI-36X Pro is recommended. Graphing calculators are not required, but are allowed IF they do not have an onboard CAS (Computer Algebra System), or QWERTY keyboard. [NOTE: cell phones, iPods, and other digital devices are not permitted during quizzes/tests.]

STUDY Assignment Day 1

a) In the course packet, take out the two-page Lecture Outline to be used for writing the notes given in the online lecture.

b) View the “Credit Version” of the online Lecture for the assigned lesson. Each lecture is available for credit during a specified period of time. After that time, a

“Review Version” of the lecture will be available to view as often as you wish, but not for credit points. The content of both versions is identical. Online Credit Version lecture completion counts 3 points; a complete set of written notes for a lecture counts 2 points.

c) After completing the lecture, peruse the online Text Reading to gain a detailed follow up to the lecture along with additional examples.

d) Turn to the written homework questions in the course packet; they are located behind the 40 pages of Lecture Outlines. Complete the online Guided Exercises. This provides interactive, guided completion of selected questions in the written homework for the lesson. Online Credit Version homework completion counts 4 points; extra credit may be earned. As with lectures, there is a Credit Version and a Review Version .

HOMEWORK Assignment Day 2 The written homework questions for each lesson are located in the course packet; these should be worked in the space provided. (Use the blank facing page for extra space, if needed.) Each lesson has two parts – Exercises and an Insight. Everything is to be done in a neat, organized manner that is consistent with the methods discussed in the lectures and the text. On assigned due dates, the Exercises (4 points) and the Insight (2 points) of the designated lessons are to be turned in for grading. Show work - no credit will be given for answers only. To account for absences or poor performance, extra credit may be earned for each assignment.

In-class discussion and additional examples for each week’s topics will be offered on some Fridays (see Course Schedule). This is a good time to get end-of-the-week help before an assignment due date.

ONLINE WEEKENDERS

At the end of each week having lectures, there is an online Weekender – a graded quiz containing 5 questions from that week’s lessons, as well as review questions from previous material. After taking the quiz, if one wants to try to achieve a better score it may be taken again - to a maximum of five times total. The highest score will be counted. Note that extra credit may be earned for each Weekender and the lowest 2 of 10 scores will be dropped from the final course grade.

HOMEWORK All of the homework assignments are included in the course packet. Do all of the Exercises for the lesson in a manner consistent with the lecture. For each question, SHOW WORK in the space provided, using the blank facing page for extra room if needed. Your answers may be compared with the Key on the last few pages of the Unit. Each assignment includes an Insight – a critical thinking application of the lesson’s content that counts for one-third of the homework assignment grade. Note that extra credit may be earned, and that there are (optional) Extra Exercises available online for additional practice.

RECITATION CLASS During recitation class each week, questions concerning lecture notes and homework assignments will be discussed, graded written work will be returned, and an in-class open-note quiz will be given. The lowest 4 of 14 quiz scores will be dropped from the final course grade.

SUBMISSION OF WRITTEN WORK Your work is to be organized with all lecture note sheets first, followed by the homework assignments. Please be sure your name and recitation class day/time are written on the first page. Staple and turn in your work to the grading box in Holtz Hall. Due dates are listed in the Course Schedule. Late work will not be accepted for grading.

UNIT REVIEWS & TESTS There is an online Unit Review to help with preparing for each Unit Test. There is no Unit 5 Test – questions from Unit 5 will be included on the comprehensive Final Exam.

GRADING

Syllabus Quiz: 10 points Lecture Notes: 20 @ 5 100 points (For each lecture, the online “Credit Version” is 3 points, and a clearly written set of notes is 2 points.)

Guided Exercises: 20 @ 4 80 points (Guided Exercises are 4 points each; partial credit is given.) A perfect score is awarded 1 point extra credit.

Homework: 20 @ 6 120 points (Each lesson Exercise set is 4 points; the Insight is 2 points.) A perfect score is awarded 1 point extra credit.

Weekly Quizzes: 10 @ 5 50 points The lowest 4 of 14 scores will be dropped. (A weekly quiz is given during recitation class meetings.)

Weekenders: 8 @ 5 40 points The lowest 2 of 10 scores will be dropped. (Each Weekender is 5 points; partial credit is given.) A perfect score is awarded 1 point extra credit.

Unit Tests : 4 @ 30 120 points (Retake opportunities are provided; see the Course Schedule for details.)

Final Exam : 80 points

Total Points: 600 points

A 540 – 600 points B 480 – 539 points C 420 – 479 points

D 360 – 419 points F less than 360 points

NOTE: 58% of the grade comes from assignments; also, two of the four Unit Tests may be retaken and up to 48 points extra credit may be earned.

On days when an online activity is assigned, click the item you want to view. Lectures, Guided Exercises, & Weekenders are not available for credit until the date shown in the Course Schedule. After the assigned “Credit Version” period has expired, the Lectures, Guided Exercises, & Weekenders will still be

accessible, but it will be the “Review Version” rather than “Credit Version.” The content is the same in both versions.

If you are viewing a “Credit Version” item, you will see a Login box like the one shown below. Enter your recitation day/time (W 12:30, W 1:30 or TH 1:30) and your name, then click OK.

(If you are viewing the “Review Version” there will not be a Login box.)

Each lecture begins with a short video clip related to the topic, followed by some general instructions. When viewing a lecture, you will be asked questions which you must answer correctly to progress. You

should always try your best to answer each question. You are not penalized for a wrong response, and you get many opportunities to try again. Feedback is given to help you answer correctly. For the “Credit Version”

be sure to continue all the way to the last slide or you will not receive credit for your work.

The Guided Exercises and Weekenders are accessed in a similar manner.
