Mathematical Literacy and
the Standards for Mathematical Practice
WMC Green LakeMay 2015
● Disciplinary LiteracyIn Wisconsin, disciplinary literacy is defined as the confluence of content knowledge, experiences, and skills merged with the ability to read, write, listen, speak, think critically and perform in a way that is meaningful within the context of a given field. (WI DPI)
● Mathematical LiteracyMathematical literacy is being able to do, understand, and apply mathematics, not only in the classroom, but in everyday lives. Mathematically literate students are able to analyze, reason, and communicate ideas effectively as they pose, formulate, solve, and interpret mathematical problems in a variety of situations. https://sites.google.com/a/dpi.wi.gov/disciplinary-literacy-in-mathematics/
What is Mathematical Literacy?
● District Literacy Goal
● Connection to SLO
● Needed a common assessment tool
Why?
● Way to measure growth in mathematical literacy that reflected the Standards for Mathematical Practice
● Connected to/embedded in curriculum concepts - a natural fit for CPM daily practice
● Common language 6-12 for students and teachers
● Foundation for collegial discussions and analyzing data as a 6-12 cohort
What we wanted...
● Math Practices Response Assessment
● Aligned to SMP
● Rich multi-step tasks
● Content is accessible - should have mastered
“MPRA”
● Based on the work of Drexel University’s Math Forum
● Incorporates/aligns with Standards of Mathematical Practices
● Current Focus on Interpretation and Completeness of Communication
Rubric
● Middle Level
● High School
Tasks/Samples
Polya’s Problem Solving Process
● Do you understand all the words?
● Can you restate the problem in your own words?
● Do you know what is given?
● Do you know what the goal is?
● Is there enough information?
● Is there extraneous information?
● Is this problem similar to another problem you have solved?
Step 1: Understand the Problem
Can one (or more) of the following strategies be used? 1. Guess and test. 12. Work backwards2. Use a variable. 13. Use cases.3. Draw a picture. 14. Solve an equation.4. Look for a pattern. 15. Look for a formula.5. Make a list. 16. Do a simulation.6. Solve a simpler problem. 17. Use a model.7. Draw a diagram. 18. Use dimensional analysis.8. Use direct reasoning. 19. Identify sub-goals9. Use indirect reasoning. 20. Use coordinates.10. Use properties of numbers. 21. Use symmetry.11. Solve an equivalent problem.
Step 2: Devise a Plan
● Implement the strategy or strategies that you have chosen until the problem is solved or until a new course of action is suggested
● Pay attention to the details
● Give yourself a reasonable amount of time in which to solve the problem. If you are not successful, seek hints from others or put the problem aside for a while (you may have a flash of insight when you least expect it!)
● Do not be afraid to start over. Often, a fresh start and a new strategy will lead to success
Step 3: Carry Out the Plan
● Is your solution correct? Does your answer satisfy the statement of the problem/address the question that was asked?
● Can you see an easier solution?
● Is your solution reasonable? Does it make sense?
● Can you see how you can extend your solution to a more general case?
Step 4: Look Back
● Familiar format: ○ Consistency 6-12 is leading to increased levels of
performance○ Increase in mathematical literacy
● Data provides feedback on students who need additional support or who exceed benchmarks
● Meaningful tool for SLO in mathematics instruction
Results
● Improvements to the rubric
● Working on developing tasks - rich, open ended, developmentally appropriate
● Creating exemplars - defining key criteria for that problem to know what each score “looks like”
● Clarity around support for students with special needs (middle level)
