Blaise Pascal

• Blaise Pascal was born on July 19th 1623

• His research was about science and mathematics

• He invented the mechanical calculator known as the Pascaline

• He created two new research areas

• He died two months after his 39th birthday due to bad health

Pascals Ideas

• Pascal's Wager

• Pascal's triangle

• Pascal's law

• Pascal's theorem

Changes to math:

• Mechenical calculator

Leonardo Pisano Bigollo

• He was born at around 1170

• He traveled to help his father and learnt Arabic numerals

• When he was 37, he published a book talking about what he learnt about Arabic numerals

• With his book he influences Europe to use Arabic numerals

Fibonacci Ideas

• Fibonacci number• Fibonacci prime• Brahmagupta–Fibonacci identity, • Fibonacci polynomials• Fibonacci pseudoprime• Fibonacci word• Reciprocal Fibonacci constant Impact on us• We have started to use Arabic numerals which

are much easier

Similarities and differences• Both of them have similar ideas like the

Pascal’s triangle and the Fibonacci sequence

• They have affected us differently, Fibonacci affected us to use Roman numerals which are much easier and Pascal created the calculator which is the base of what we have today

Pascaline

• Pascaline is the was the line of 20 calculators that Pascal created

• They are mechanical calculators that are the base of the calculators and the computers we have now

• It took Pascal 3 years and 50 models to perfect it

Arabic Numerals

• Arabic numerals are the numbers that we use which are 1234567890

• They are very easy to read and is very straight forward as the different units are alighted in straight lines

• Roman numerals on the other hand are very had to do as they require you to calculate the number itself first before doing calculations like IV which is 5(V) minus 1(I) but in Arabic numerals is 4 which requires no other calculation

• Roman numerals are also harder as the different units are not alighted well so even basic subtraction is harder.

Affect of the calculator

• Blaise helped develop the calculator which is very closely related to computers so we now can do math with much more efficiency

• Calculators have helped us develop a lot in both science and technology like calculating ratios and weight in space technology, building very tall/wide and big buildings

• without the calculator, all these things would take much longer to do compared to nowadays.

Affect of Arabic Numerals

• Computers would be much harder to make as with Arabic numbers

• Arabic numerals which makes math much easier to do as we can do math with ease to know the answers more quickly and to be able to calculate directly in straight lines

• We are also able to know the value of things the moment we look at the numerals.

What would happen if it wasn't for these two mathematicians?

• They have made a huge impact on us as without Fibonacci, we might still be using roman numerals taking us much longer to calculate and make it almost impossible to do long and hard equations. Without Blaise, we might still be required to do mental math/calculating on paper for simple but long equations like a shopping list. Without both of them, we would still be doing mental math with roman numerals.
