Newsletter Editor Jennifer Paye-Weber Materials may not be reproduced without written permission. Direct all questions and concerns to [email protected] Registration is now open for the 9th Annual WMC Mathematical Proficiency for Every Student (MPES) conference. This two-day conference will be held at the Chula Vista Resort in Wisconsin Dells on October 17 th and 18 th . So, join national and state educators for two days of discussion around Access and Equity with the goal of improving the mathematics education of all students. More details and registration information are available on the WMC website (http://wismath.org/MPES). Along with daily keynote presentations by Dr. Victoria Bill and Dr. Erika Bullock, you can also attend grade-band sessions that will help you build an equity lens in your own classroom. Day 1 (Oct. 17) will focus on going deep in mathematics in order to allow for different perspectives of mathematical ideas. Through the perspectives comes an increase in conceptual understanding followed by procedural learning in mathematics. Teaching the depth of the content also builds a more positive student identity in mathematics. Understanding the hows and the whys will better support learning as students move through the grades in school. Day 2 (Oct. 18) will highlight strategies for providing positive mathematical experiences to affirm students’ identities as doers of mathematics and problem solvers. The sessions will focus on how we can build positive experiences for students in math class so that they will be determined and persistent mathematical thinkers. The day will also focus on critical question such as “What other characteristics will these students gain from these experiences?” and “How does confidence in mathematics support learning in other content areas?” In Memoriam. Thomas Carpenter, of UW-Madison, passed away on August 7, 2018. He was known for his work with the Cognitively Guided Instruction Framework. In 1992, he was awarded the WMC Distinguished Mathematics Educator and in 2004, he received the NCTM Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to mathematics education.
