Purpose

Page 3: Mathematics In The Real World

My capstone project deals with incorporating real world experiences into mathematics.

I choose to create a web quest dealing with the process of purchasing a home.

The web quest will act as a review for a marking period test.

Page 4: Mathematics In The Real World

The students will conduct research behind closing costs, interest rates, types of mortgages, and areas to purchase homes.

Students will also become familiar with how much money their career they choose will pay them.

Page 5: Mathematics In The Real World

The students will have the choice of four options for their final product to demonstrate their knowledge gained to the class.

The students will be better engaged into the learning because it will be authentic.

Objectives

Page 7: Mathematics In The Real World

Student-Centered

The students will have the freedom to choose their own career.

The students will be able to choose their own home they want to purchase.

The students will have options to their final presentation.

Page 8: Mathematics In The Real World

Student-Learning The students will be learning about the

processes required to actually purchase their own home.

The students will be conducting the necessary steps to determine their interest paid on their home and the amount of money they will be spending over the length of their mortgage.

Page 9: Mathematics In The Real World

Using Information

The students will be using the information they gather about how much they can purchase a home for in efforts to find a home they can afford.

The students will also be using the information about closing costs and interest rates to make calculations.

Page 10: Mathematics In The Real World

Teacher Facilitator Students have never encountered the

facts about purchasing a home. I have just purchased my first home in October and feel as though I am not an expert, but I can provide good information on the process.

I will need to help guide the students on their selections and their use of technology.

Page 11: Mathematics In The Real World

Multiple Instructional and  Learning Modalities

Each student selects their job and their home.

Each student will also have their choice of how they present their project.

Page 12: Mathematics In The Real World

Higher Order Thinking Skills The students will be required to

determine which types of loans are better, why it is better to purchase a home, and various other questions that will require higher order thinking skills.

The students will need to use their research and calculations to justify and analyze particular matters involved with purchasing a home.

Page 13: Mathematics In The Real World

Collaboration

The students will collaborate to share ideas and help with the use of technology.

The students will bounce ideas off one another to hopefully produce better projects in the end.

Page 14: Mathematics In The Real World

Performance Based Assessments

The students can choose from writing a paper, presenting, designing a web page, or interviewing a mortgage loan officer.

The students will also need to submit all their research and questions they answer throughout the web quest.

Page 15: Mathematics In The Real World

Multiple Sources of Information Including Technology

The students will need to be using their laptops throughout the project.

The students will be on websites and using Microsoft Office to complete their project.

Page 16: Mathematics In The Real World

Technology Integration

The students will be using technology throughout the project and will need to have knowledge on how to use the technology.

The students will need to be familiar with Microsoft Office and the Internet.

Page 17: Mathematics In The Real World

Addressing All Learning Styles

Students will be taking a learning style inventory to figure out what project best suites them.

The final projects address all the learning styles.

Page 18: Mathematics In The Real World

Using a Variety of Information to Complete this Authentic Project

The students will be using loan calculators, how much home can they afford calculators, real estate websites, and career websites.

The students have a lot they can explore throughout this project.

Time Frame

Page 20: Mathematics In The Real World

10 weeks in length

Week 1: Teach chapter one about equations and inequalities.

Week 2: Finish chapter one and test on the chapter

Week 3: Teach chapter two about linear relations and functions.

Page 21: Mathematics In The Real World

Week 4: Finish chapter two and test on chapter two.

Week 5: Teach chapter three about systems of equations and inequalities.

Week 6: Finish chapter three and test on chapter three.

Page 22: Mathematics In The Real World

Week 7: Teach chapter four about matrices.

Week 8: Finish chapter four and test on chapter four.

Week 9: Implement the web quest on home purchasing.

Page 23: Mathematics In The Real World

Week 10: Projects will be presented to the class. The marking period test in which the web quest reviewed the marking period material will be administered.

The emphasis is on the web quest, however the weeks teaching the material are necessary so the students can complete the web quest.

Project Components

Page 25: Mathematics In The Real World

Inquiry

I will allow my students the opportunity to become home owners.

They will need to figure out the proper way to efficiently purchasing a home.

They will be able to calculate and determine which mortgage they can afford with the job they choose.

Page 26: Mathematics In The Real World

Projects

The students will have their choice to be creative through writing a paper, designing a website, preparing a presentation, or interviewing a mortgage loan officer.

Each student will then need to present their project to the class.

Page 27: Mathematics In The Real World

Technology Students will use the Internet,

Excel, PowerPoint, Movie Maker, Word, and any other technology the students see fit for their project.

The students will have freedom with the technology they need to accomplish their assigned tasks.

Page 28: Mathematics In The Real World

Dynamic/Flexible Grouping

The students will be able to work with their own groups to bounce ideas off for their projects.

The students will help one another through out this project, however they must turn in their own project.

Page 29: Mathematics In The Real World

Authentic Teaching and Learning Experiences The students will learn the steps to purchase a

home. The students will learn how mortgages work and

why one is better than another. The students will learn about closing costs. The students will learn how much their career

will earn them yearly. The students will determine how much of a home

they can afford based upon their annual salary. The students will have the opportunity to

interview a professional pertaining to the web quest.

Resources

Page 35: Mathematics In The Real World

Teacher

Introduce material on chapters one through four.

Present basic information on technology the students can use.

Facilitate during the web quest to aid students throughout their project.

Page 36: Mathematics In The Real World

Students

Access to computers for Internet, Microsoft Office and other technology they see sit to use.

Time to work on final projects in class.

Web sites that deal with mortgages and loan calculators.

Page 37: Mathematics In The Real World

Learning Style Inventory

This is designed to help the students choose their final project.

Page 38: Mathematics In The Real World

Desired Outcomes

Page 39: Mathematics In The Real World

I hope to get my students engaged into mathematics so they can see the connection of how mathematics is used in the real world.

I hope to educate my students on the process of purchasing a home. This is something that is overlooked, but very important to have in life.

Page 40: Mathematics In The Real World

I hope the students can make the connection that home owning is better than renting a home.

I also hope the students see the amount of interest they will pay over their mortgage and it is better to pay extra on your mortgage if possible.
