Reference for Selecting Learning Resources
Mathematics: Kindergarten to Grade 12: A Reference for Selecting Learning Resources is a reference tool provided by Manitoba Education and Training to help educators select student and teacher learning resources to support the curriculum.
Learning Resources Reviews
Publishers submitted resources for review to the Learning Resources Unit of Instruction, Curriculum and Assessment Branch in response to the Department’s request for new learning resources to support provincial curricula. Teachers, nominated by superintendents of school divisions, are selected as teacher-evaluators. Using a collaborative review process, the teacher-evaluators examine the materials according to the resource-selection criteria to make recommendations regarding the suitability of the resources for Manitoba students and teachers.
Resource Selection Criteria
Learning resources are selected based on the basis of their fidelity with the rationale, philosophy, processes, and learning outcomes identified in each curriculum. Four evaluation criteria are used in selecting learning resources:QQ Curriculum Fit/Content/Philosophy: the degree to which the content and processes
of the resource align with the curriculum, thus providing support for curriculum implementation.
QQ Instructional Design: the degree to which the resource provides for multiple approaches to learning, has a wide range of use, is current, and reflects current pedagogical theory and practice.
QQ Social Considerations: the degree to which the resource is free of bias and stereotyping. The resource is examined for Canadian content, the use of culturally diverse examples, and accurate portrayal of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples. Cautionary notes are added to alert teachers to potentially sensitive curriculum-fit issues or potential community concerns related to the resource.
QQ Technical Design: the degree to which the resource is visually appealing and has a logical and consistent form.
When selecting learning and teaching resources, teachers should consider how the resources meet the learning requirements of students, the perspectives of the student population, and local decisions related to the delivery of potentially sensitive content.

Terms and Definitions
The following terms and definitions are used to describe the learning resources:QQ Breadth: identifies learning resources that address a wide range of student learning
outcomes for a particular grade.QQ Depth: identifies learning resources that provide effective learning experiences in
greater detail for a narrower grouping of student learning outcomes.QQ Breadth and Depth: identifies comprehensive learning resources that provide
both breadth and depth dimensions for an extensive grouping of student learning outcomes.
QQ Teacher Reference: identifies resources that assist teachers in implementing the curriculum, including background information for teacher use; may identify teaching suggestions and learning activities.
QQ Teacher Guide: identifies a separate guide for teachers or a teacher edition of a student text.

MathUP is a K–8 online resource for teachers and students. Rubicon Publishing partnered with Canadian educational researcher, academic, and author Marian Small, to develop an online support that compiles videos, practical tips, and instructional strategies to support teachers in planning. The current iteration is an Ontario-based resource in which the learning outcomes do not perfectly align by grade level to the Manitoba outcomes. However, most outcomes in the Manitoba mathematics curriculum are addressed. Outcomes are arranged by strand, but can be rearranged with several suggested paths, or customized by teachers to consider student needs and establish a plan for the year.
Teachers are provided with pacing suggestions, material lists, and resources for lessons that can be printed, edited, or projected for classroom use. For each outcome, prerequisite topics are identified to ensure that gaps are closed and connections are made to prior knowledge. Three-part lessons provide open questions, practice, parallel tasks, problem solving, games, puzzles, digital games, number talks, and consolidation questions that allow the teacher to focus on student thinking. MathUP also provides a variety of tools and direct prompts to assist in planning assessment as learning, assessment for learning, and assessment of learning.
MathUP is designed to assist teachers in the different aspects of planning. Planning for differentiation is supported by providing open questions and parallel tasks. Planning for combined grades is supported by providing correlations to essential understandings across grade levels. It works to provide a balanced approach to assessment with a variety of tasks that assess knowing, doing, understanding, and communicating mathematics. A balanced approach to instruction provides teachers with specific direction and strategies for problem solving, skill development, and conceptual understanding.

Students can use this resource as practice or as an extension to the curriculum. It would not be ideal as an everyday resource, but good as a once-a-week resource. The questions are purposeful and the variety of questions beneficial. Students might be engaged with the missions, puzzles, and medals offered. Teachers can differentiate instruction by assigning different grade-level assignments. The program is offered in both French and English.
The Netmath website is aligned for use with all grades in the Manitoba curriculum with the option to differentiate grade-level outcomes to different levels of learners. For example, you can send some grade-level practice questions to certain class members, or send lower or higher grade-level practice questions of the similar outcome to others. Outcomes are thoroughly represented with multiple questions for each outcome. Visual models that accompany questions help build conceptual understandings. The feedback from student success of each topic is related back to the teacher to guide future lessons. The website includes incentives, such as badges and missions, to engage users and challenge thinking. The resource acts as a supplement to a holistic math program and can be used in school or at home. The resource is available in English and French.

Mathology Little Books are a series of little readers available in both French and English for use in teaching Kindergarten to Grade 3 math concepts. The books are organized around big ideas within each of the math strands: Number, Patterning and Relations, Shape and Space, and Statistics and Probability. There are different titles for each big idea. The big ideas are derived from Pearson’s Mathematics Learning Progression that describes a progression of student learning across the Kindergarten to Grade 3 grade level.
The little books are engaging, colourful, well illustrated, and portray different contexts, including varied Indigenous perspectives from First Nations communities across Canada. Each little book is accompanied with a teacher’s guide. The teacher’s guides provide teaching ideas and strategies on how to support learning of the big ideas and related mathematical concepts. The quantity of little books will vary from 2 to 12 per big idea to enable teachers to differentiate according to student learning needs. The teacher’s guides contain features to help guide the learning. Features include “Watch For” statements to help teachers diagnose student misconceptions and possible learning difficulties. Another feature of the guide is that it contains a list of questions for teachers to ask that encourage modelling of math language to promote number sense and reasoning. The guide also informs how teachers can connect to other learning concepts found in other math strands and subject areas. At the end of each guide, the teacher has choices of learning options that include teaching to large groups, small groups, and learning centres. The guides contain line masters that must be downloaded from the Mathology Pearson site. Both the little books and teacher’s guides can be found on the Mathology Pearson site, including digital formats of the books.
Teachers must be mindful of the learning outcomes as the resource does not completely correlate to the Manitoba curriculum learning outcomes. Correlations between the content of the books and the Manitoba mathematics learning outcomes can be found on the Mathology Pearson site.

StrADDegy is a Canadian/Ontario produced professional learning digital toolkit for Kindergarten to Grade 3 teachers. While StrADDegy makes connections between addition and subtraction, its main focus is on addition facts to 20. The correlation is just above the Manitoba curriculum learning outcomes for the number strand; however, the processes and philosophy of the Manitoba math pedagogy are reflected within the contents.
The resources are grouped into the following strategies: count-on, number bonds to ten, think doubles, ten and some more, and make ten.
Prerequisite information is provided to explain and teach each of the five strategies. Teachers are also given access to an array of resources that can be introduced as whole class, small group, or independent activities for students. Sums & Differences is a professional resource used to teach addition and subtraction. The lessons follow an instructional flow and should be done sequentially. The concepts of addition and subtraction are presented separately, offering five complete lessons per operation. For each operation, the lesson sequences are stated followed by what prior knowledge is needed, along with stated intended outcomes to be learned. The lessons for both concepts are organized in a similar way. Each lesson starts with a whole-group activity that involves supporting students in making connections with prior knowledge, using visual models and open questions, followed by students exploring the concept through an assigned task. Lessons are supplemented with additional learning experiences that include practising the math to help consolidate learning and extending the math to present complex ideas and tasks that help deepen student understanding of the concepts. This resource was written by a Canadian educator and uses Canadian contexts. It is user-friendly and provides blackline masters and teacher tips throughout the book that help teachers with the learning.
The Grades 1 and 2 book focuses on adding and subtracting 2-digit numbers. This book mainly covers Grade 2 learning concepts.
The Grades 2 and 3 book focuses on adding and subtracting 2-digit and 3-digit numbers. Grade 2 teachers would need to be cognizant of the learning outcomes in the Grade 2 curriculum.
The resources provide lessons on how to teach addition and subtraction separately but do not show how they are connected and can be taught together to deepen students’ understandings of the operations.

The authors of Taking Shape show how spatial reasoning is a critical component for Early Years’ students. The authors give clear explanations and practical research inside the process of spatial thinking and reasoning. The researchers collaborated with Canadian educators to learn, create resources, and support Early Years’ educators with the teaching and learning of geometry and spatial reasoning.
Taking Shape is comprised of the two parts. Part I includes background information and research behind the importance of teaching spatial reasoning and geometry. The authors explicitly cite why spatial and geometric learning is fundamental to learning for Early Years’ students. The research helps teachers understand the importance of why geometry and spatial reasoning are taught. For those who wish to continue reading the research more extensively, the book gives summaries of research studies on the Taking Shape website.
This resource lends itself to opening the doorway to learning about geometry and spatial reasoning by providing critical information and learning opportunities for teachers who may have limited knowledge. An important feature of the Part 1 is the examination of one of the processes found in the Manitoba math curriculum—visualization. Visualization helps develop visualization skills to assist in processing information, making connections, and solving problems. The book helps teachers understand the importance of teaching visualization within the classroom.
Part II of the book gives instructional activities teachers can engage students in learning about geometry and spatial reasoning. For each section, the authors provide information about how each area relates to mathematics and rationales for engaging students in the tasks. The sections feature guided lessons, exploratory activities, and quick challenges. The book gives a variety of implementation strategies, which are explained in Chapter 4. The tasks found within each section suggests a variety of ways they can be adapted into the classroom, along with different possibilities for student groupings. There are two features of the book to help teachers deepen student understanding. One feature is the “Key Questions” found at the end of tasks and activities. The authors suggests key questions to promote student understanding of key ideas. The second feature is the “What to Look For, What to Listen For: Ongoing Assessment of Student Learning,” which offers insights on what to observe in student behavior. This feature also offers suggestions on how to vary tasks to meet the learning needs of individual students, including those who are struggling and those who are ready for a challenge.
The book focuses on five central developmental areas of geometric and spatial reasoning rather than on learning outcomes. It is important, therefore, that teachers are cognizant of the grade-level expectations of the Kindergarten to Grade 2 mathematics curriculum when using the book in the classroom.

Alex Lawson has written an unique resource after many years of researching and conducting student interviews. The book is supplemented by an eText with over fifty narrated student videos. Lawson has developed a continuum of early numeracy development for addition/subtraction and multiplication/division. The continuum captures the early numeracy progression of strategies students use and the underlying key ideas. Teachers can read narratives and observe through videos how students learn strategies and how key ideas develop over time.
Each chapter is organized around a series of video clips consisting of interviews with students solving problems. The student interviews are done over two to three years to show how mathematical understanding develops. The major part of the book concentrates on the developmental progress of the operations. The final chapter includes a toolkit of everyday instructional activities, games, and lessons that teachers can use in the classroom. The toolkit provides a wide variety of easy-to-implement classroom activities that build student number sense and early computation skills.
Teachers will gain a better insight into student mathematical development after reading this book.
