Maths - Activity 1 - Multiplying Mentally

If I know...then I know…

E.g. If I know 4 x 3 = 12, I can use this to help me answer 4 x 30

4 x 3 = 12

4 x 30 = 120 (4 x 3) x 10

I could use it to help me solve 40 x 3 too…

40 x 3 = 120 (4 x 3) x 10

Also... 40 x 30 = 1200 (4 x 3) x 10 x 10 This is also the same as: (4 x 3) x 100

Multiply by 10: Move the digits ONE space to the left and add a zero to the empty space.

Multiply by 100:Move the digits TWO spaces to the left and add two zeros to the empty spaces.

Multiply by 1000:Move the digits THREE spaces to the left and add three zeros to the empty spaces
