Maths Introduction

This week in maths we will be revising our measuring skills and looking weight

and capacity.

All of the lessons we are planning link in with our “White Rose” scheme of

learning and BBC bitesize lessons for July. We have done this so that you can

go to the links below for further help and advice.

Summer Term - Week 10 (w/c 29th June) Lesson 1 to Lesson 4 (really useful

videos on there!) https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-2/

You can play a game Play the measurements level of Karate Cats Maths https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zjkphbk/articles/zf4sscw

Monday 6th July Lesson 1

LO. To measure mass in grams

In Year 2, the children use standard units of mass (grams) for the first time.

They continue to use balance scales before moving on to use standard weighing

scales. Children apply their counting in 2s, 5s and 10s skills to reading scales

accurately. Have a watch of some of these videos to start off your learning

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/z48q6sg

If you have some weighing scales at home you could estimate and weigh

different household items such as tin of beans, mobile phone, a banana, the

remote control! The children could firstly estimate how many grams they think

the object may weigh and then they could measure it to check. You could use

this template to input out your results.

Object: Estimate: Actual:

Now hopefully we have a better idea of how many grams objects weigh.

Now let’s have a look at reading these scales. Check what the scale is going up first and

then see where the arrow is pointing.

LO. Measure mass in kilograms

Today we’re looking at when we measure objects in kilograms.

Have a look at the balancing scale, add the total weight in kg’s. Watch this

vimeo video to help with your tasks today. https://vimeo.com/432483645

When we want to measure the mass of an object that weighs more than 1000

grams we use kilograms. Kilograms are shortened to ‘kg’.

1 kilogram = 1000 grams

Or 1 kg = 1000 g

Add up the total of kg that Amir weighs. You could do this on a number line, counting in 5s.

Top tip: You’ll need to find the

difference!

Between 15kg and 28kg. You can solve

this on a number line counting up until

you get to 28.

LO. Compare volume

Capacity is the amount a container can hold. Volume is

the amount it is actually holding. Children use the language ‘quarter’, ‘half’ and

‘three-quarters full’ to describe and compare volume.

You will need different containers at home and a measuring jug

Can we order the containers from largest to smallest in terms of volume (how

much water they can hold)

Which container has the most or least liquid in?

“The taller the container, the more liquid it can contain. Do you agree?”

Try these

Thursday 9th July – Maths lesson 4

LO. Millilitres

How much liquid that is held in container can be measured in millimetres (ml)

There are 1000ml in a litre.

In today’s questions you will be reading the scale in ml. Top tip - Check what

the scale is going up in first.

Try these

When adding the ml together

you can use a number line or

draw the dienes or column

method.

How many ml are in 1 litre?

________________________

Next time you have a drink like

squash or milk check how many ml

the bottle holds!

LO. Measuring challenges

This week we’ve looked at measuring in grams (g) kilograms (kg) and we’ve had a

look at capacity and volume and measured in millilitres (ml)
