Maths Meeting On the 3rd October, Clover Hill held a Maths meeting to discuss the new Maths curriculum and what the staff at Clover Hill are doing to continually improve children’s maths knowledge.

The national curriculum for mathematics aims to ensure that all pupils:

become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.

reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language

can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.

At Clover Hill, we are encouraging children to develop their basic maths knowledge so they can apply this to more complex, mastery tasks. A skill we aim for most children to achieve by the end of each academic year.

These basic maths skills can be practised at school and, with your support, at home.

This year we are running a times table challenge from Year 2 to Year 6 so that children become fluent in multiplication facts appropriate to their year group. In Year 1, we will be running a number bonds challenge. All the children’s success will be celebrated by receiving a certificate to display both at school and at home.

Clover Hill invests a lot of money on internet software packages to develop children’s knowledge. All children can access Espresso, an online resource with many activities and videos linked to the all aspects of the Maths curriculum (as well as other topics.) In addition to this, children in Key Stage 2can access Mathletics, another online maths programme to help children develop their core maths skills across all aspects of the Maths curriculum. The children are encouraged to achieve bronze, silver and gold certificates. Again, all the children’s successes will be celebrated and displayed in school.

Both these learning packages can be accessed at home. If you require your children’s password, please speak your child’s teacher.

If you have any questions about how to help your child with Maths, please refer to the school’s website where you will find our new calculation policy or your child’s teacher.
