Decimals and Percentages Investigation - Teacher Notes Teacher Notes Rationale Mathematics investigations open students’ minds to the possibility of multiple approaches, multiple outcomes and multiple solutions. When linked to the world in which they live, open- ended investigations can help students see the relevance of mathematics within their lives. They also provide wonderful opportunities for differentiation, enabling students to feel confident and successful as they engage with tasks at their own individual level. Overview This mathematics investigation has been designed to accompany a unit of work on decimals and percentages. It requires students to apply their knowledge and understanding of these concepts to a real-world situation. Objective To plan an end of year class celebration, adhering to a list of conditions. Duration Approximately three 60 minute lessons Prior Learning Before commencing the investigation, students should be familiar with the following concepts: • calculating discount amounts and sale price • performing calculations involving decimals. Differentiation: Supporting Students Less capable students could be supported in their learning by allowing them to use digital technologies when performing calculations. Alternatively, the task could be simplified by reducing the number of items on the party supplies catalogue, or reducing the number of people attending the celebration. Differentiation: Extending Students More capable students could be challenged to complete calculations for a range of additional scenarios; such as sourcing reasonably priced entertainment for the celebration, further reducing costs by a certain percentage or catering for an additional number of people. Monitoring Student Understanding Due to the open-ended nature of this investigation, students’ responses will vary significantly. For this reason, answers have only been provided for some sections for the task. For the remaining sections, teachers must check that each student has completed the investigation according to the task requirements. INVESTIGATION

RationaleMathematics investigations open students’ minds to the possibility of multiple approaches, multiple outcomes and multiple solutions. When linked to the world in which they live, open-ended investigations can help students see the relevance of mathematics within their lives. They also provide wonderful opportunities for differentiation, enabling students to feel confident and successful as they engage with tasks at their own individual level.

OverviewThis mathematics investigation has been designed to accompany a unit of work on decimals and percentages. It requires students to apply their knowledge and understanding of these concepts to a real-world situation.

ObjectiveTo plan an end of year class celebration, adhering to a list of conditions.

DurationApproximately three 60 minute lessons

Prior LearningBefore commencing the investigation, students should be familiar with the following concepts:• calculating discount amounts and sale price• performing calculations involving decimals.

Differentiation: Supporting StudentsLess capable students could be supported in their learning by allowing them to use digital technologies when performing calculations. Alternatively, the task could be simplified by reducing the number of items on the party supplies catalogue, or reducing the number of people attending the celebration.

Differentiation: Extending StudentsMore capable students could be challenged to complete calculations for a range of additional scenarios; such as sourcing reasonably priced entertainment for the celebration, further reducing costs by a certain percentage or catering for an additional number of people.

Monitoring Student UnderstandingDue to the open-ended nature of this investigation, students’ responses will vary significantly. For this reason, answers have only been provided for some sections for the task. For the remaining sections, teachers must check that each student has completed the investigation according to the task requirements.

Your teacher has set the following list of conditions for the end of year celebration:• All food, party decorations and serving supplies must be purchased from your local

party supplies store, Pandora’s Party Palace, using the catalogue provided.• An assortment of food must be selected; including snacks, a selection of lunch items,

some sweet treats and some drinks. You must choose some healthy options whenselecting the party food.

• A selection of decorations must be purchased to help your classroom look brightand festive.

• An adequate amount of serving supplies for the food and drink you have orderedmust be purchased.

• You must not exceed the budget of $ that has been set and agreed to by the class.

Your class has asked your teacher if you can celebrate the end of the school year with a party. Your teacher has agreed, provided that the class takes full responsibility for planning the event and works within a budget. Food, party decorations and serving supplies will need to be purchased from your local party supplies shop, Pandora’s Party Palace. Luckily, they are currently having a sale and items can be purchased at discount prices.

Before planning the celebration, your teacher and classmates must discuss and agree to a fair budget for the party expenses. Once decided upon, each student must create a party plan for the class celebration. The party plan must provide a full list of all food, party decorations and serving supplies to be purchased, the quantity of each item required, the total cost per item and the overall cost of the celebration. Your teacher will then select one of the party plans to put into action!

Create a comprehensive party plan for an end of year celebration foryour class.Follow the conditions that your teacher has set, which are outlined below.

Prepare to Party!
