Logan Utah Temple Barn- In the late 1800’s the Logan Utah barn was built for the purpose of storing supplies as the Mormon settlers constructed the Logan Temple- The existing site is now unused and in need of renovation- Wind, Sun, Shade, and Surrounding use are key elements to consider when designing for this site- The re-design of this site will focus on a community center consisting of : Dry climate demonstration garden, Urban agricultural garden, Outdoor plaza areas for teaching and relaxation, Arbor structure, Fencing around the site perimeter, Paved path connecting the Temple Barn to the public sidewalk, Paved paths providing access to the dry climate and urban agricultural gardens, and Plantings throughout the site

Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning

Kendall Crockett 2015 Portfolio

Dear LAEP Faculty,

It is with great pleasure that I submit my portfolio to the Department of Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning. It is my intention to continue my education at Utah State University in the LAEP program. I have lived in Cache Valley most of my life and I’m determined to gain a higher level of education at Utah State. I love the outdoors and being apart of the landscape which is around me. Furthering my education will provide me with the skills needed to help people connect with the environment they live in.

My passion for the outdoors started very young while living near the Logan Mountains. There has always been a great deal of time devoted to camping, hiking, and motorcycling in the back woods. My love for the landscape inspired me to find work that would allow me to spend time in the outdoors. As a teenager I worked for landscaping companies doing sprinkler systems and flower bed design. Ten years ago I decided it was time to start my own business doing yard care. The more experience I gain with residential landscaping and maintenance the more I realized education is the key to success.

Working hard, and never giving up have always been important to me; these characteristics have helped me accomplish many challenging things in my life. As I spend time in the LAEP Department I’m able to be motivated by professors and fellow students, allowing me to work hard and never give up. The studio culture that is present with the sophomores have stretch me to go above and beyond in my work. Our class will be able to take that momentum gained by studio culture and reach new heights.

I know the LAEP Department will benefit from having me as a student because, I will motivate myself and students around me to do our best, and push ourselves to the next level of excellence. Everyday as I apply what is learned from my classes, I see the potential I have to make the world a better place. I am excited to continue my education at Utah State University. Thank you for taking the time to review this portfolio of my work, and the opportunity to express my intent to be considered for matriculation.

Sincerely,

Kendall Crockett

Tools Used:

Illustrator, AutoCAD, Photoshop

Skills Learned:

The ability to interpret a given site for a client. Add circulation pathways to give a sense of place to the Logan Temple barn property. Agriculture and demonstration gardens implemented into the design along with plaza areas for educational teaching opportunities. I was able to learn how to take certain project elements and apply them to the site in order to create a design that would both satisfy the client and the users. Illustrator was used for circulation paths, AutoCAD for planting design locations, and Photoshop for creating colored visual effects that are pleasing to the viewer.

Site Planning and Design 07

Tools Used:

AutoCAD, Photoshop

Skills Learned:

I spent time with a real client to gain understanding of the site. Learned communication skills between designer (me) and client. Used AutoCAD for line work and Photoshop to create the proposed site design for residential property.

Tools Used:SketchUpSkills Learned:Learned 3D modeling in SketchUp to build cross section of residential site.

Site Planning and Design 08

Tools Used:

Hand Graphics, InDesign, SketchUp, Group Collaboration

Skills Learned:

2015 Charette week I learned additional group collaboration skills including discussing new ideas and alternatives to the site solutions. I took the role of hand graphics and research. My work on this design board are the hand rendered cross sections.

Aerial Site Inventory and Analysis

Currently at Utah State UniversityI am on a team of students usingcutting edge technology to produce aerial inventory andanalysis from a new perspective. The use of drones in our practicewill open up new doors for Landscape Architects in the future. We have been able to produce accurate 3D modelingand topography of our sites and this is only the beginning. Photo credit: Kif Leswing

Personal Projects:

I am the owner of Crockett Mowing, here are some examples of the work we do. Top row shows a before, during, and after restoration project. Second row left image is an example of a front yard water feature I installed sharpening the house entry. Second row right image is an example of a yard we maintain, and a renovation of the front yard. Bottom row is my company logo, on the bottom right we have renovated the hillside with plantings for erosion control and landscape appeal.
