Matte Painting in PhotoshopPart 1: Maison

This tutorial is actually a "making of" where I explain how I proceeded to achieve this matte painting.I use a Wacom Intuos² A4 board, if you don't have any graphic board this is going to be hard but not impossible.

At each step of the matte painting, useless to remind you to create a new layer so that the work will be easier andmistakes avoided !

First of all, find a good res picture.I chose to use a picture of ahouse I found on the web. Youcan find very nice pics for free,

 just look around !

The first step is to isolate thehouse by putting it on a separatelayer and by erasing the rest.In this example I used the

polygonal lasso tool for the house, and a soft eraser for the bushes.

Now you need a new background. You can either find a good pic, either paint one yourself.

I chose the former because it isless time consuming, and theresult is far better than what Iwould have gotten had I painteda background myself. I found thisimage on the web, unfortunately Ido not remember the site I got itfrom.

Put the sky behind the house (byputting the sky layer under the

house layer), and apply a littleperspective effect to give moredepth to the sky, make it less flat.

Here the house picture was takenfrom a low angle, which makesour work easier.

Now look at the edges of thehouse. They still are the color ofthe original sky. We'll fix that.

Page 3: Matte Painting in Photoshop Part 1-3

Using the magic wand tool, selectthe empty zone of the house layer. Then, Select > Modify > Expand,to make your selection wider. Picka value that includes the zone weneed to color correct. In the menu : Image > Adjust >Hue / Saturation and color correctthe edges by matching them withthe color of the roof.

Still using Hue / Saturation andalso Color Balance, adjust thecolors of the house and sky layersso that they perfectly blendtogether.

Now we want to get rid of thatpalm tree that hides a part of thehouse. That tree has nothing todo there since we want to createa morbid mood.

This is probably the most delicatestep because we have to handpaint the missing part of thehouse. For that I mostly used theclone stamp tool, tool that allowsyou to paint something usinganother part of the picture forreference. For instance, the tiles locatedbetween the lower and middlewindows were painted usingsimilar tiles of the house, usingthe clone stamp tool.

Why not add a lightning bolt tomake the scene a little moredisturbing ? Using the simple nonfeathered brush, this is simple.Draw your lightning, duplicatethe layer, and blur the copies tomake the lightning glow. Then, use the Dodge tool to brightenthe clouds from where thelightning is originating.

Paint dead trees behind the house,or use existing ones from pictures.Of course, make the colors andluminosity match.

The fun part, now ! Let's breakdown the house. Well, not all of it.To make it look older, I added ahole in the rood, painted withbrushes.

Page 5: Matte Painting in Photoshop Part 1-3

  5

Don't be afraid to add broken parts ! The house is supposed tostill be standing, so don't go too far.

You can see that I broke a wooden beam, a pipe, a board, another part of the roof, and a window. When you breaksomething, use the clone stamp tool to fill in the empty spaceyou created.

Make it look dirty. First of all, thewindows. I used a non regularbrush and painted the windowswith a matte color. Then, changethe transfer mode of the dirt layerto make sure that dirt andwindows blend nicely together.

For this example I chose theLuminosity mode.

Page 6: Matte Painting in Photoshop Part 1-3

 6

Repeat that step, only do it on theentire house. Paint with a dirtiercolor and set your layer toMultiply. Make sure you make

joints and edges look filthy too, because that's where dirt appearsmost. This is one of the longeststeps, but take your time anddon't mindlessly add dirteverywhere !

Here, the porch, zoomed in.

The last step is to create a Levelsadjustment layer to get the finalcontrast of the matte painting.

Matte Painting in PhotoshopPart 2: Snow

This is my second matte painting tutorial. Here I wanted to change the season of a scene from summer to winter.

First of all, find a good res picture. I chose to use a picture of a house I found on the web. You can find very nice pics forfree, just look around !

Alright, first let's modify the colors.Using Image > Adjust > Hue / Saturation, try to get softer colors with lesscontrasts and saturation. Make it lookcold !

Page 8: Matte Painting in Photoshop Part 1-3

Create a new layer

Now we can begin painting the snow.Use a rough brush to create irregularshapes. In the tools window, set theforeground color to pure white, and thebackground color to a blue-tinted whitewhich will be used to add shadows onthe snow. All steps involve workingalternatively with these two colors.Begin by adding snow on the edges ofthe house where the snow wouldnaturally fall onto.

With the blueish white, paint theinferior part of the snow (the shadows). This will add depth and will simulate theway snow reacts to light.

Create a new layer

With the same brush and same white, paint the windows to give them afrosted look. Set this layer's transfermode to Overlay to make it match.

Page 9: Matte Painting in Photoshop Part 1-3

  9

Create a new layer

Same principle, on the roof this time.Make sure you stay true to the originallighting. Parts where the sun directly hitsthe roof should be a lot brighter thanthe darker spots, which will blueish. Thisis important especially on the coneshaped parts. When everything will bepainted, you can then use the Blur tooland make a smooth transition betweenpure white and blueish white. After that, use the Burn and Dodge tools to increaseor decrease contrasts. If you use Burn onthe blue-tinted whites, it will give youan ice look, which can be interesting.

Create a new layer

Now we are going to paint the ground. Iused an irregular brush so that the grasswasn't entirely covered. Then using theblueish color I added nuances tosimulate an undulating look. I also left a

clean way that goes to the door.Same principle to add snow applies tothe trees and bushes in the garden.

Now let's do something to avoidboredom from only adding snow! Usingthe Dodge tool, on the house layer, brighten spots here and there to add

frosted parts, as well as to lighten upthe dark parts of the house (like theinside of the porch). Do not forget thatsnow is a reflective surface, it willbounce light off pretty much everywhere.Using the same method, brighten up therest of the scene like the trees and sky.Subtle, but necessary since it adds theimportant detail that sells the overalleffect and makes the image look natural.

 10

Create a new layer

Now on to the extremely boring step :powder snow over the trees. Powder issubtle, so don't overdo it! Still using thesame method, add snow accumulationson branches, the most difficult partbeing to actually see where thosebranches are. It depends on the qualityof your picture. If you have chosen apicture without trees you are a cheater !!

For the big branches in the foreground,we can see leaves. I chose to add snowon groups of leaves, which can be timeconsuming, but you should not choose

the shortest way over quality work.

Create a new adjustment layer:

Brightness/Contrast

This step is optional, but I created alayer and have applied a linear gradientfrom top to bottom to increase thecontrast at the bottom of the pic.

Matte Painting in PhotoshopPart 3: Castle

Here is the making of my third matte painting, this time it is the Oratoire Saint-Joseph (in Montreal) under the rain!I use a Wacom Intuos² A4 board. For each step of the matte painting, useless to remind you to create a new layer so that

the work will be easier and mistakes avoided!

First of all choose a photograph of goodresolution. I found the photograph of"l'Oratoire St-Joseph" (in Montréal).

Here is a perfect sky, found on the Net,which will go very well for what I want tomake.

First of all, start by isolating the castle byputting it in a layer and by erasing theoriginal sky. Here I used the tool polygonallasso for the building, and a soft gum for

the foliages.

Page 12: Matte Painting in Photoshop Part 1-3

 12

Now one will erase all that should not bethere a few centuries ago, i.e. the cars, thetourists, the standard lamps and thebarriers. For that, use the tool Clone Stamp. It is not very complicated, nor very longwith this example.

I want that this scene occurs in stormyweather, therefore it is necessary to erasethe shadows created by the sun.Always with the Clone Stamp erase theshadows on the ground of the shrubs andthe trees. With the Dodge tool erase a littlethe contrasts of the elements by clearingup the zones of shadows in order to createan ambient light.

Now one can add the Cloud layer behindthat of the castle.

Page 13: Matte Painting in Photoshop Part 1-3

7/23/2019 Matte Painting in Photoshop Part 1-3

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/matte-painting-in-photoshop-part-1-3 13/21

  13

One will accentuate the contrast of the skywhile insisting on the clear zones as if astorm lit the clouds by the top. For thatduplicate the Cloud layerand pass the copyin mode Color Dodge.

Now it is necessary to harmonize thecolors of the two elements: sky and castle.Modify the color of the castle with menuImage > Adjustment > Color Balance, andmake your best so that the tone of colorscorrespond.

Then select the Castle layer, and in menuLayer > New Adjustment Layer chooseColor Balance. Thanks to this adjustmentlayer which is created on top of the others, one will be able to change the generalcolor. Give a distressing atmosphere to the

scene.

Page 14: Matte Painting in Photoshop Part 1-3

 14

Profit finally to obscure the areas on left ofthe building with the Burn tool, becausethey are not exposed to the light of theclouds of right-hand side... hum does itmake any sens LOL? It is a rather subtleeffect, but that brings a small significantdetail.

Here is a zoom to understand better.

Now one will add a little grain to the Castle layer by adding noise.

Before After

Page 15: Matte Painting in Photoshop Part 1-3

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/matte-painting-in-photoshop-part-1-3 15/21

  15

One now will add a small detail, that canbe anything, I chose an old carriage foundon google. Place this layer below theadjustment layer, thus its color will beautomatically adjusted with that of thescene. If there are still differences correctthat by going in Color Balance.

Still a thing with the carriage, it isnecessary to give it a shadow. So select theCastle layer and with the Burn tool slightlyobscure the ground below the carriage.Subtle effect but important one.

Here is the result ! Not that bad, but now Iwant to add rain. Obviously for a mattepainting made for a movie the rain wouldbe created in compositing and animated. But here it is simply to make a still image,so we don't care if the rain remains frozen !

Page 16: Matte Painting in Photoshop Part 1-3

 16

Let's work on the rain. Create a new layerand fill it with black with the Paint Buckettool. In menu Filter > Noise apply AddNoise, choose Gaussian andMonochromatic, 10 or 15 should suffy forAmount. Go in Image > Adjustments >Levels and tweak it to erase some noiseand to make it more visible. Finally in Filter> Blur apply a Blur Motion, whichsimulates a basic rain.

Change the Rain layer mode to Screenmode in order to blend it in the scene. Playwith the opacity of the layer to adjust itwith your scene.

Repeat the creation of a second Rain layerbut with a little more noise to get a denserrain. Lower the opacity of this second Rainlayer to simulate the rain in thebackground.

Page 17: Matte Painting in Photoshop Part 1-3

  17

Now one will create large water drops onthe image as if the scene was seen frombehind a window. Create a new Drops layerfilled with black, add noise.

In menu Filter > Pixelate choose Crystallizein order to obtain large crystals of noiseinstead of the small points.

Adjust the number of crystals in menuLevels.

Page 18: Matte Painting in Photoshop Part 1-3

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/matte-painting-in-photoshop-part-1-3 18/21

 18

Then apply the Filter effect > Stylize >Glowing Edges, which will create circlesaround each crystal. It looks more likewater drops now.

Here the result which I obtained with thismethod.

Now change the layer mode to ColorDodge, which will make the drops lessvisible in dark areas of the scene. We leave for the moment the drops likethat, we'll return there at the end.

Page 19: Matte Painting in Photoshop Part 1-3

  19

Here we'll create reflexions on the wetground. Start by duplicating the Castlelayer and Clouds layer and merge themtogether. Now in Edit > Transform choose

Vertical Flip to reverse the Reflexions layer.Move it so that the bottom of the stairs isthe line of symmetry. Finally you can cutout this layer so that it is only visible onthe principal alley of the castle.

Change this layer mode to Darken andopacity to 30%.

Here is the very light reflexion but whichbrings a small key of realism.

Page 20: Matte Painting in Photoshop Part 1-3

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/matte-painting-in-photoshop-part-1-3 20/21

 20

Finally I added the filter Filter> Distort >Glass in order to scramble the reflexion alittle. It is not really essential, but if onewants to look more closely at the imagewe'll see that water disturbs the reflexion.

Now do the same with the carriage !

We return to our water drops! For this finaleffect it is necessary to flatten all thelayers of the scene, so make a copy of yourfile and choose Layer > Flatten Image. Theimage is now made of one single layer, wewill be able to apply effects to the whole

image now. In menu Filter choose Liquify.Click on the Bloat tool in the toolbar onthe left of the Liquify window. Setup yourbrush radius and its density and paint oneach drop in order to simulate an effect ofdiffraction. It is not very easy at thebeginning so do not hesitate to start againas many time as you want.

Page 21: Matte Painting in Photoshop Part 1-3

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/matte-painting-in-photoshop-part-1-3 21/21

Once that you made all the drops you canalso create water trails behind the dropswhich run along the window. I used a mixof several tools of the Liquify module likeForward Warp or Turbulence. Leave Liquify. Finally we will accentuate the light anddark areas of the drops by painting withthe tools Dodge and Burn. This water dropseffect is oviously not essential, but in fact Iespecially wanted to test it.

So here’s the final result:
