November 2011
Ralph C Smedley, founder of Toastmasters International wrote
in the late 1950s: I have said often that “We learn in moments of
enjoyment”. This seems to me to describe very adequately the
theory and practice of Toastmasters.
The simple fact is that we grow or learn or work better when we
enjoy what we are doing, and this is essentially the secret of
success in Toastmasters. Our meetings are made enjoyable by a
fine, helpful fellowship, in a pleasant social atmosphere, with
activities carefully planned to give us profit “in moments of
enjoyment”.
This is why I am so insistent on program planning, so that there
may be material presented which informs and inspires while it
entertains.
The program presented at the regular meetings is the key, the
touchstone, the mainspring, of the club’s progress and success.
The program is the laboratory process, the educational method,
the training school, the stock in trade of the Toastmasters club.
Since it is so important, it should be given primary importance.
The meetings during the summer season need present no
problem of attendance if your club puts on the right kind of
programs. Make these programs attractive and so full of interest
that no man will miss one if he can help it. Good programs will
help maintain good attendance and good interest. Let’s try it this
summer. Page 22-24 Personally Speaking

Sign-Up time in Toastmasters week February 2012
These clubs are partying,
celebrating their years of long service as a Toastmasters club.
Congratulations!!
They were acknowledged at the Semi Annual Conference ear-
lier in November, receiving a banner patch.
As a way of celebrating Toastmasters Week,
13-24 February 2012, all clubs are encouraged
to hang up signs/ flyers/ banners promoting
their club and the organisation. This is a simple,
easy and affordable way to get the word out
there that the Toastmasters programs are
fabulous. Plan to put signs up in public places
during February.
If you would like a selection
of flyers to personalise for
your club, ring or email me.

To help the club maintain the positive,

members to learn and grow
Be positive and friendly.
To serve my club as an officer when
called upon to do so
There are 7 club executive positions, President, Vice- President Education, Vice- President Membership, Vice- President Public Relations, Secretary, Treasurer, Sergeant at Arms. These elected positions are held for 1 year- July to June. Each role is explained on Page 76 in the CC manual, paragraph Your Club’s Leadership.
Toastmasters International’s core values are integrity, dedication to
excellence, service to the member, and respect for the individual. These are
values worthy of a great organisation, and we believe we should incorporate
them as anchor points in every decision we make. Our core values provide us
with a means of not only guiding but also evaluating our operations, our
planning and our vision for the future.
Reflect how your club incorporates these values as anchor points in every
decision you make.
Toastmasters

Congratulations!!
So what is Toastmasters International’s message? For many years, Toastmasters has been synonymous with public speaking. However, the powerful combination of strengthening one’s competence in communication and building leadership skills through participation in Toastmasters is what differentiates Toastmasters International from other skill-building programs. The new official Toastmasters tagline, “Where Leaders Are Made,” reflects this synergy between communication and leadership. Toastmasters training helps members build their competence in communication so they can gain the confidence to speak effectively and lead others. To achieve a consistent and clear message, the tagline “Where Leaders Are Made” should be used on your club’s promotional material, if you choose to use a tagline in your marketing efforts.
The Power of Retaining Members
The art of wowing your customers is termed “customer service”- a term that we often hear
in the retail world. You’ve probably been in a shop where you were lavished with buying
options and felt satisfied with the attention you received and your purchase. You’ll
probably recommend that shop to your friends and family.
This same concept happens in our Toastmasters clubs. When a visitor arrives in your
club you lavish them with attention and explanations about the program and benefits of
being a Toastmaster member. They become a member and tell their friends and family
about your wonderful club. They stay as a satisfied member for many years.
On average, members stay in our organisation for approx 2 years, or around the time
they achieve their CC. It is essential that members are satisfied with the customer service
they receive at your club. WOW them with attention, experiences and learning
opportunities to ensure their personal growth. Ensure the program is fun and friendly and
have your members be satisfied members for longer.
Plan to retain your members for longer by wowing them with excellent customer service.
What is the process for new members receiving their
new member kit?
New member signs Membership Application Form and pays $
VPM/ Treasurer submits form online to Toastmasters International in
California
Each Friday, a list of all members who have joined in the past week is sent to
our New Member Kit Coordinator, Tarja Kelly.
Tarja posts out all New Member Kits early in the following week to the
address that was listed on the Membership Application Form.
LGM sends a welcome email to new members alerting them to the fact that
their New Member Kit is in the mail to them.
The Toastmaster magazine is also sent to the address listed on the
Membership Application Form.
Approximately 10% of addresses are incorrect and cause issues with
delivery of New Member Kits and emails.
Please ensure that addresses, both postal and email, are correct
when the Membership Application Form is submitted. Thanks
